Stuart Lou -- we are eternally indebted to you! You have made historical documents of performances that were just memories for so many of us! Bless you!
I totally agree with everyoe - Sills is magnificent!!! But, give a listen to Henry Price! What an underrated Artist!!!! Beautiful voice, handsome man - he had it ALL!!!!
Thank you StuartLou. The clips are a historic record of beauty beyond compare. I met her many years ago when she did a Lucia in New Orleans, also L'Assedio and Don Pasquale on Met tour in Atl, and once long ago when I was 3rd cover for Cleomene at La Scala. I would have died to have sung even once with her. I attended all the rehearsals and she was a marvel to behold as the opera came together. Grazie assai per questo dono. Ernesto
... never failed. If someone had to cough they always sat next to me- and NEVER covered their mouth. Thank God i stopped going to the opera when "cell phones" came in. The days of wanting to "record" are over. Ain't nuttin i want "out there".
This was most likely from NYCO in New York in March or April of 1976. During the curtain call, you can see Julius Rudel, the conductor. Julius only conducted 4 of her Borgia performances in 1976. Of those 4, the tenor, Henry Price, only sang in three . Can anyone ID the Don Alfonso? Is that Richard Fredricks? That would eliminate one more performance, so we are only talking March 27, April 4 or April 8.
Though the film quality isn't the best, do you notice how incredibly relaxed she is while she sings? No involuntarily arm movements, no frozen body positions while she sings a bit high note -- she moves like a stage actress trained at Julliard. She just has such control over every muscle of her body. She makes it all look so easy.
I saw her live in this production and this was a wonderful reminder of what an incredible singer she was. I count myself lucky to have been able to see her twice. Thanks for sharing this.
Incredible! Just perfect. The greatest Donizetti Diva of her time. Never got the respect she deserved in the "Italian" opera circles. You wouldn't believe what I've heard some anti-Semetic opera people say about her!
THANK YOU StuartLou!! My day, week and month has been made once again!!!! Stunning Beloved Beverly! In my VERY best Oliver Twist imitation dare I ask "if there is any more"? :):)!!!

What a performance! And at least we see the mezzo-soprano Susanne Marsee in the curtain calls....

If there was any doubt that this music is still effecting and powerful this kind of a performance puts the doubt to rest.
