I also am hesitant to accept the assertion that Muslim women are more respected than other women somehow. I mean, anybody, regardless of religion, could wear a veil and cover themselves quite thoroughly. So far as I'm aware, all non-Muslims have this option available to them. And yet I don't know if any of them choose it. Surely if they really wanted to, societal expectations wouldn't weigh more heavily on them somehow than on Muslim women.

Isn't that a dangerous way to approach things? It seems like it simply denies any possibility that you may be wrong. In my estimation, at least, it is important to consider the possibility that you are wrong no matter how certain you are. It's not hard to find examples of why this...

If you yourself truly thought that the marriage was insignificant, wouldn't you perhaps say "yes, I disagree with it, but I distance myself from it and consider it of little importance" rather than trying to justify it? I just want to make sure you've given things adequate consideration. After all, some people argue that it's arrogant to put your own morality before that of God, but I think it's arrogant to believe that you can tell with certainty what God is saying through any holy book, and surely it's offensive to God not to use to the fullest the mind he has given you.

Your comparison is bad. Margaret was bethrothed at age 3, not married- in fact, she never married the Dauphin. Even had you been right, there is a difference between being nominally linked for political alliance, and marrying a small child without any such forces involved. Furthermore, Muhammad is still supposed to be the perfect man; nobody imitates Margaret of Austria.

That people married quite a bit younger than today is not in question. The issue is, Muhammad is supposed to be the perfect man and a timeless model for behavior, correct? This would seem to indicate that it is therefore acceptable to still marry small children, since he was not just a model for his own time.

Okay, so I think what you're saying is that I'm mistaken in my understanding, and that the Quran is the source of truth and correctness, as opposed to Muhammad himself or his actions. That resolves the question, which is all I was looking for.

If this conclusion is incorrect, you can actually just explain why and that would satisfy me. I have no reason to believe that there is not some tidy explanation, but I haven't seen it. This is just how learning works, one person asks questions and someone answers them.

yes, but you see, i am in process of still reading the Quran, and i assure you when i see something i dont agree with, i go to scholars and research it up. i dont accept it blindly. Even God tells us to question things, but questioning is different from denying :)
