i am currently reading It never snows in september by robert kershaw which tells the battle from the german side and apart from the words spoken this incident happend pretty much as in the film. The flamethower team hit amunition stored behind the machine gun bunker in a shed.

Just been reading 'Arnhem' by Major General Roy Urquhart, who mentions an attack on a Pills box on the bridge by sappers with a flame thrower at night. Apparently, one really did distract the other at the critical moment causing them to him some wooden sheds which were ammo dumps ! And here was me thinking Mr Attenborough probably just made this up for a bit of fun....
