Towards the end of Matrix Revolutions, Smith has another monologue, in which he nihilistically affirms that life has no meaning or purpose. That apparently contradicts the message of this monologue; does it mean that in this speech, the agent intends purpose as the needs and goals that determine the actions and choices of each individual?
@MK93KM I think that's true. In this scene, Smith is no longer an Agent of "the System". He seems to see himself in from another perspective "A new man". Where once he obeyed the rules and was part of the Architect's method of controlling the less than 1% that rejected the Matrix (this being his purpose), now he has none. I conjecture he's having trouble dealing with this change. Possibly because unlike Neo, his mind is more "bound by the parameters of perfection".
@EliAuer Considering his behavior until the very end of Matrix Revolutions, I'd say that Smith' s purpose is to achieve total control of the system; just before the final battle, we see that by replicating like a virus he has almost succeeded. But the interesting point, in my opinion, is the contrast between Smith' s belief in determinism ("we are here because we are not free") and Neo' s belief in free will. I think it is a question that the trilogy leaves open to interpretation.
I've always wondered why there are so many other characters who are irrevocably more intelligent and eloquent than Neo. Then again, those beings who I am referring to are personifications of computer programs, namely; The Oracle, Agent Smith and The Architect. Agent Smith has some of the best dialogue that completely escapes most peoples' attention span and I love the character for that purpose. "The purpose of life is to end." Agent Smith is an amazing fictional nihillistic philosopher!
so lets say if neo had STDs, with all the copying that happened.. would you say agent smith now has STDs? i mean the movie would make a lot more sense if so.
Compel to stay, compel to disobey, now here i stand, because of you Mr Anderson because of you i am no longer a agent of the system because of you change, unplug, NEW MAN! (so to speak) like new, apparently free (neo Congratulation) Thank you Rofl!
@nojstradamus It's Shakespear without William, Smith just knows how to make words work, simple if anything he's like a rapper but sincere and respectfuly dressed.
Elrond. V. Smith. A superb name.

Agent Smith is one of my all time favorite villains, great acting, great dialog.
Unlike other sorry ass gangsta bad guys, painfully one dimensional, and completely devoid of all entertainment value.

To be honest, this scene is so perfect, look at Smith's facial expression, it's so real, he should have been nominated for an oscar for all 3 movies.
Especially for Revolutions.

It makes me laugh so much when he casually added: 'With certain satisfaction I might add' after he was talking about watching Neo die. lol
So casual.
Love you Hugo Weaving!
