I used to sing this whenever I got liquored on Country Roads Apple Wine. 5 bottles for 15 bux. You couldn't get more shitfaced on homemade hootch and for some reason it always had me bawling like a baby and belting out this tune. LOL Funny thing was I could sing it pretty damn well.
I wonder if Mitchum and Dino and a little friendly dicussion over drinks during the filming of Five Card Stud in the Spring of 68 as to who's version was better.
Both recordings were released in Aug 1967 with Mitchum's version doing well on the Country charts hitting # 9 (#96 Pop) and Dino doing better on the Pop charts hitting # 38. We don't have entertainers like them anymore.
This version is way better than the one done by that slobbering lush Dean Martin, but Dean's has that real feel about it because he was almost sloshed when he sang it.
Those of you under 45 or so won't remember this, but this song came about from a series of TV commercials for Italian-Swiss Colony Wines. Popular-priced stuff, but lost out to Gallo, etc. Used to have their headquarters in Asti, California. And now you know...the REST...of the story.
I was watching a talk show with Mitchum as guest. Carson may have been the host. Mitchum stated that he was first to record the song. He said he did it as a favor to a friend who needed a demo to sell the song. Does anyone else remember that?
AWWWW-SOME!! LOVE THIS! Oh man it was the first song I could remember singing at a family get together. At age 4 no less! LOL Some of my boozing alcoholic family was bawling by the time I finished. I can still belt this out.
he was good at what he did, but he was a poor mans dean martin. in acting and singing. close but no cigar. he's like chris tucker to chris rock you know what i mean!
It's interesting looking back on this song. In June of 1967, Robert Mitchum's version was number 1 on a country music station in Los Angeles. On the Billboard magazine Country Music chart, the record by Mitchum got up to number 9 nationwide. By contrast, the version by Dean Martin peaked at only number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.
OMG I just cant believe this is now on youtube after searching for so long and nobody believin me that Robert Mitchum also sang it, my dad - who is the spittin image of RM - bought it in 67 and I knew I wasnt imagining it ... thank you so much for posting!!
HIM AND DEAN COULD BE DISTANT COUSINS THEY LOOK SO MUCH ALIKE!

I wouldn't say this is the best version, but it's no worse than Dean Martin's recording. I bought both versions anyway!

Yes good, pretty good but not genius like others, Frank, Dean, Sammy etc. that's why he is mostly known as an actor, a genius one!

I prefer Merle Haggard's version.

@MrRazorblade999 As Mitchum puts it: "There just isn't any pleasing some people. The trick is to stop trying."

@tabernavudu Right, but Mitchum is still my favorite actor of all time. Bad singing can't change that.

This is a much moreinteresting version than Dino's

@katsuyukisakata
Though the record at this time was given in detail, there was no mention about the harp.

Dean's voice is a little too smooth for a song like this. Mitchum's rougher edges suits this better.
