I understand that it is a form of entertainment, but I would much rather watch real men at real weight classes really compete. I don't see why there cannot be at least respectable way for collegiate and international wrestlers to make a living doing what they dedicated their lives to. There is a half and half side to the entire thing. Wrestling is fake because it is scripted. It's fake because they aren't hitting each other as hard as they can. They aren't really slamming their opponents head into the steel steps. Yet what isn't fake is the fact that they are tossing each other off of steel cages into announcer tables, and through the steel cages. They are getting slammed in the middle the ring. Padding does only so much after all. So it's fake, but not in entirety.

the problem is that those wrestling federations want to make you believe it's REAL, that's why you cannot compare it to a movie or boxing. They make a lot of money with those "marks" (=people, who believe it's real) because they are their biggest fans. I know there are also "smart marks" who know it's fake but still enjoy wrestling with the storyline and everything (like watching a movie) but that's the minority.

Being not an American, I think this sport is ridiculous, because if you've trained yourself to be athletic enough to jump from ropes and smash someones face in with a chair, than couldn't you just as well try to be good at any real sport that requires strength and agility? BUT on the other hand, I grew a strange form of respect for the people involved in it after seeing the movie The Wrestler and a documentary about it from Louis Theroux. I don't watch wrestling anymore (haven't for about 4 years now) but I just gotta say this. Mainstream wrestling is like a movie, the acting is just that, acting. The storylines and events are all scripted, but the stunts are very much real, just like in a real life movie shoot, there are stuntmen that actually perform the stunts... think of these guys as those stuntmen and you'll be on the right track. As someone who used to wrestle yes the mat is padded and no the locks aren't actually applied but try taking a body slam even on a padded ring from a 6 and a half foot man throwing you and if it doesn't hurt i'll agree with you. Try being thrown out of the ring and landing on your side.. Yes it's scripted we know this, but as I said before. Fake or not it hurts like hell. You just get over it get back up and brush yourself off.

the problem is that those wrestling federations want to make you believe it's REAL, that's why you cannot compare it to a movie or boxing. They make a lot of money with those "marks" (=people, who believe it's real) because they are their biggest fans. I know there are also "smart marks" who know it's fake but still enjoy wrestling with the storyline and everything (like watching a movie) but that's the minority.

Being not an American, I think this sport is ridiculous, because if you've trained yourself to be athletic enough to jump from ropes and smash someones face in with a chair, than couldn't you just as well try to be good at any real sport that requires strength and agility? BUT on the other hand, I grew a strange form of respect for the people involved in it after seeing the movie The Wrestler and a documentary about it from Louis Theroux. The wrestlers work really hard. I just don't understand.

I don't watch wrestling anymore (haven't for about 4 years now) but I just gotta say this. Mainstream wrestling is like a movie, the acting is just that, acting. The storylines and events are all scripted, but the stunts are very much real, just like in a real life movie shoot, there are stuntmen that actually perform the stunts... think of these guys as those stuntmen and you'll be on the right track. Simple as that.
