You miss the entire point of the game series Myst,to play Myst you need to have an imagination and be good at problem solving puzzles wich in it's self can qualify as a game seeing as it's on a games console and played with a games controller,Myst is one of the first games to offer multiple endings as well as extreme immersion and atmosphere,you are dropped in a strange land and you know nothing,there is no main character for you to control because YOU are the main character,very poor review.

It's a point and click adventure game that requires more thinking rather than fast reflexes like most games. It's certainly a video game is has video, and it's interactive, so it's a game as well. Keep an open mind....

Seriously? It was good for the time it was made. And it's still good if you're looking for a unique plot and good game. Examine everything. You didn't notice the door by the dock? Or the paper on the side of the path? Or the light switch in the observatory that you called a dentist's office? It is NOT a picture book. But if you really can't stand the point and click, play Myst V.

The game immerses you into the main world itself, it makes you think of what your supposed to do....what if you were stuck on that island and didn't know what to do? Well, you fucking explore and try to figure out what to do...thats the fun of the game

One of the best story telling puzzle games that exercise the mind to ever be created. The graphics got much better as the series went on. One thing you got right is that it is like an interactive story. But not giving this game a chance was a mistake. Then again, you just might not be one for puzzle games that put all their chips into story line and imagination. That said, we are all human beings and entitled to our own opinions. PS: Happy Birthday to me! ;D

@DantheGermanGamer Not really. By the end of Myst I had the concepts down (reading Atrus' journals helps) and then by the end of Riven I pretty much understood the world. Reading the three books gave the little bits of information I didn't have but weren't vital to understanding. Exile and Revelation were just kind of additions to the plot without any new info on the world. I haven't played End of Ages yet but it sounds... different. Less realistic.

Harsh dude...harsh. Usually I find your reviews pretty spot on but you shot from the hip on this one. To your benefit however I did find the Saturn version does take some of the charm out of the game due to the lower resolution, color palette and load times.

Pick this up for PC some time (a fast CD ROM on a modern computer helps) and try to figure it out.

It really takes some time to dig into and realize how to play. But once you realize what's going on and piece together the story it's totally worth it in the end.

I keep hearing that it's eventually worth it, but every time I try to play it I lose my patience and end up shutting it off. And I think any game that starts off "bad" and eventually "gets better" is the sign of poor game design.

I don't disagree, but I don't think it's the design that's bad (imo), but pacing. You have to take the game in context.

Remember that at the time the interface to this game was pretty revolutionary, so starting off mind-numbingly slow is kind of expected to let players figure out how to play without penalty.

Also, anything "3D" in 1995 was exciting enough on it's own to carry the beginning of the game.

I've never played "Real Myst", a realtime 3D remake, but you might want to check that out.

@dommiesan It's a game that you need patience for. You don't have this patience. So you're not the kind of person Myst is aimed towards. You need to let yourself fall into the world of Myst and not think of it as a game. You need to think of it as if you are there. Because there are no skipped scenes or levels. It's a world, nay, MANY worlds waiting to be explored. Puzzles waiting to be solved. People waiting to be helped.

Myst is a game you really have to get into. You have to have the patience to wander around before you can find any puzzles. And it's definitely not an action game in any way. But as an adventure game, it takes the cake in its own oldie, made-for-windows-95 way.

If you want better graphics, the series improves as it goes.

This is the sort of game you have to take some time to immerse yourself in and soak up. You can't just go into a room and say "I don't know what this thing does" and curse it. You have to explore the world and figure out for yourself what it does, how it works, and what you need to extract from it. It's a game designed for people who like to think. Myst is exploration, observation, curiosity, reasoning, and thinking.

'Myst' as in mysticism and mystery. You either feel Myst or you don't. However so many have loved this game that it gives me faith in mankind. For in our nature we look to see what makes this place, things are not as they seem. The images in this 'game' are beautiful, but it is their place, story and function (or non funtion) that gives the world its shape and intrigue, which creates something vivid yet surreal, It then becomes that much more beautiful and perhaps... that much more haunting.

I think you should try this game again. personaly, you are the only person ive ever seen put this game down. the puzzles are amazing, and so was the story. I think if you tried to solve a puzzle or even try getting the secret message the note said at the begening you would enjoy it.

Dom, its is marketed as an epic puzzle game. Everything thing in the game has hints for something, even tho most people struggle trying to guess the answer to some which makes the game a very big mental strain. I recommend playing this game on the computer since its easier to play with a mouse. Also have some scratch paper to write down things you will have to remember.

Wow ummm... I was never a giant Myst fan. But this review seems kind of unfair towards it. I get the feeling that not only was it the first time you played it, but that you didn't even know what genre it was. It's a puzzle game.

I still got my Sega Saturn and this game for it. This was a groundbreaking game it I think that it is still fun to play even today. Maybe you should give it more of a chance and actually see how the game is before passing judgment on it.

Maybe I'm rushing to judgement on this one. I gave it about 5 minutes of gameplay, and I didn't read the manual. Maybe I'll give this one another shot soon. My initial impressions I feel were accurate though. It is basically a slideshow of pictures as far as I could tell.

The 'time setting' is actually a constellation setting and you have to use the combinations of the post columns and books and scribings you throughout the game to solve the 'dates' for the constellation to then progress to other islands in the game. This is a game you MUST understand before reviewing. Otherwise, it is like giving your GREAT Grandma an Xbox360 and telling her to connect it wirelessly. This is an AWESOME GAME to get lost in. IF you want to shoot up or race, that IS NOT HERE!

Dom, I'm sorry man. You HAVE NOT experienced Myst. You're review is my VERY FIRST experience of this game. The glorified 'dentist chair' is ACTUALLY an observatory, on your way up the path, you missed the note, go read it. Those rows of columns, look closely at the symbols atop of them (think). This game was UTTERLY USELESS until I calmed down, let it play as I cleaned my room as a teen and the game pulled me in. This game is AWESOME! I have it on 3DO, I need to pull it out and play.
