  • Funny!! Gene handled the "phone/microphone/reading of the card with great aplumb.

  • miss ya, gene

  • WOW ! Was she ever on the soap opera ? Which soap opera !? My mom watches Match Game (the old ones) this was excellent

  • when he said ontario i thought she was from canada

  • Same.

  • This is sorta sad...it looks like Gene is thinking to himself, "Wtf? This show sucks, and so does this phone contest."

  • At the time this was done, Phil Donahue was also on the air and he was able to take calls in the studio on his show without having to hold a telephone handset up to his head.

That was just weird, but Gene made it work.

  • I LOVE the look on Jon's face as he's giving his answer!

  • Gene's watch is nice. Actually, it just occurred to me that he never wore one on CBS's Match Game or Break the Bank. It looks like it says 3:43. Can anyone read it?

This phone bit is awkward! Why didn't they use a speakerphone? I know they were around in 1983!

  • Even with video compression and many tape dubs, you still can tell the watch time?

If they used a speaker phone it may cause some echoing, which the show doesn't need.

  • Just a guess from what I could see. I was curious as to what time it was taped, and therefore when the lady was called. The watch caught my eye.

With a real speakerphone it would be hard to understand both ends of the conversation. I thought they might simulated it by patching Gene's hand mike audio through to the phone, and her response from the phone to an earpiece. I guess there's some reason that wouldn't work (delays?). But don't they do something like that on radio shows that take calls?

  • Here's how to guess the time. Pause the video at 1:15. Take an analog watch and put it on your left wrist the way Gene has it and hold your arm as he does. This is how you know where 12 o'clock is. Then match the light areas on the watch face (at least one is long and skinny like the minute hand, which is appears to be between where the 8 and 9 should be). Follow from the center of the face any other long reflections: the only other one I find is between where 3 and 4 should be.

  • Yes, she, can appear on an NBC soap opera!
