ok guys, heres what you do;

open the pattern as a new document.

take your rectangular marquee tool and make a selection out of the pattern (i.e. control click the layer) so you see the marching ants.

go to edit > define pattern.

a dialogue box will come up asking you what you want to save your pattern as, the default will be fine, but you can change the name as you see fit.

then all you need to do is open up your pattern stamp in the original doc and select the diamond fill.
