This film / lecture was produced 14 years ago (1997), and yet it is still being withheld for the sake of monetary acquisition ($75-$195). Education is free when you make it free to the world.
he is very cool, forgive but i thought he was white everytime i would cite him and reference him.. and i guess i have a very different light to what he says now in reference to the fact that now he is black or not completly white... He is honourable and a great and influencial academic.. that i too wish to follow in his foots steps so help me God! South Africa Mosibudi Ratlebjane
representation is preesnting sth which is already there. what is the point ! encoding and decoding. This approach to textual analysis focuses on the scope for negotiation and opposition on part of the audience is more rational
I attended the University of Birmingham.. unfortuantely about 5 years after the department was closed down, and a good while after the major theorists, Raymond Williams, Hoggart, and Stuart Hall, had left. Indeed, I think they are frequently better theorists than a great number of swaggering arrogant cigar-wielding Parisian-types. You'd rarely catch an English academic mystifying himself quite the way someone like Baudrillard did - it's just not in the DNA.
The reason why I prefer British Cultural Studies to the deconstructive / post-colonialist / approach: you can actually understand it, and they don't take for granted that everybody knos Hegel by heart.
my favourite theorist ever ! I love you Stuart Hall! this is just a tip of the iceberg of his work ...I am sad that the the magestic CCCS is closed by the narrow minded conservatives ! but the bullet is already shot and cultural studies is thriving everywhere thanks to this MAN and to others who worked with him in CCCS ( perry anderson, richard johnson , Angela Maccrobie et al !!!!!! Love to all of ya !keep the good work ! please if anyone has more vidoes of Stuart Hall PLEASE upload !!!!
I'm studying in that department. Although, of course, it's just a sociology department now..
Stuart Hall is one of my favourite theorists, but I've never really been convinced that Cultural Studies is a genuine discipline, distinct from social and political theory.
I really enjoyed the images he used to depict his definiton of representation. He makes you stop and think about the real meaning behind the adds in magazines we read.
You can look for "articulations on posmodernity" I thinks it's an essay... Google it :)

He is an unsung hero. His finest work, I believe, is on the Self and the Other.

I wonder who would win in a fight between him and Frank Furedi.
I'd go with Hall.

My degree is a Childhood Studies course and one of my current modules is Children in the Digital Age.
This lecture is useful, because you can apply what he is talking about to many aspects of the media, children included.
