  • I love the guy who plays Jesus voice.

  • 111,000 views... pretty cool!

  • come here Jesus, i got somthin' to show ya (*wink* *wink*)

  • The Jesus Freaks were as much a part of the early 1970's as the acid heads in the late 1960's. I went to a Christian grade school and the air was imbued with this scene.

  • @robertschelly Oh, we're all still here. You guys just like to pretend we went somewhere :)

  • gary, cause HE is superman!! Think about it!

  • What's with the superman "S" on Christ's shirt?

  • C'mere, Jesus, I got somethin' ta show ya!

  • 0:13

    "Oh Jesus Crrr"" (Gasp) LOL

  • This Mary Magdalene in 1910's clothes is fantastic.

  • Hahaha....Jack Bristow with a 'fro!!!!

  • Song starts at 4:48 (:

  • Shouldn't this song be done by Sonia Manzano?

  • ooh sheep on the right. oh I see thank you!

  • This movie is absurd, hence its popularity in fundalmentalistic circles?

And this song is a very old -- removed from the Episcopal chuch hymnal because of its non-inclusive language. Why is Jesus wearing a Superman emblame? To announce immediately how superhuman he is? I wonder if Victor Garbor has kept this movie on his resume.

  • my school is doing this show, and I sing Turn Back O' Man, very fun song!!!

  • 7 people didnt turn back.

  • WHY IS JESUS IN "TURN BACK O MAN?!!!?" NO!! >:/

  • this was my solo in 8th grade <3

  • I think this movie really sets the standard for the show, in all the performances.

  • haha baaaaaaloney!

  • @Shoresee CAN YOU DO IT BETTER?

  • My last performance of this show was today:'(

  • Some devout ministries on the internet have said this is blasphemy, but I liked it and I graduated from catholic school. Plus our teachers took us to see the play in SF one outing, and a nun even played Jesus Christ Superstar for her class. Ministries please note.

They also did not like this song because of sexual overtones toward Jesus, but Mary M was a lady of the night. That's gospel.

The ministries should note Jesus turned toward the sinners, not the self rightous.

  • @supermandisco I agree with everything you said but the Magdalene was not "A lady of the night". There has been some debate to the translation of the gospel where it's said Jesus cast 7 demons from her but Biblical scholars are 99.9% certain she was not a prostitute. I go to a church of Mary Magdalene, so I feel the need to protect the woman's rep :)

  • @WarOnErrorism91 If you follow the lyrics of JCS, Judas approaches Jesus with a comment about hanging with "women of that kind." I dont think she was a virgin or a nun.

  • @supermandisco JCS, while it was a brilliant musical, is one take. Scholars have since proven that MM was not a prostitute. JCS was a work of art and was allowed to take liberties for the sake of art. If you read the gospels, you see that Judas actually says very little and MM is only referred to as a devoted disciple of Christ. In 591, Pope Gregory the Great made a speech where he grouped together 3 women in the bible and called them all MM. Biblical scholars now believe this was a mistake.

  • @WarOnErrorism91 In the lyrics of "I dont know how to love him" she claims to have had so many men before. Whatever the scriptures dictate, and what this production implies are two different things.

  • TURN BACK O MAN 4:38

  • 0:40

    well THATS awkward...

  • Wow, the guy as 2:10 reminds me of Robin WIlliams

  • @TribeHazSpoken

    Reminds me of Ron Jeremy.

  • when Jesus & John hugged, that was seriously the cutest thing ever <3 awwws

  • @2008atwt I agree.

  • Come here Jesus, I got something Yo show ya best line in the movie!!! Lol

  • I really like this movie, but i hate when the people change their voices....its kinda cheezy

  • 0:14 - 0:54 I love that part.

  • "Oh I get it!" That is my only line in our perfomance lol

  • this scene must have been so awesome to shoot!!

  • "Sorry. No goats!"

    "Ba-a-a-a-a-logna!"

    lolz!

  • Jesus Christ!

  • i go to an all girls catholic school and we had to perform this show... easily the best song in the show ;)

  • This is one of two fav songs in the movie

  • "Turn back oh man, foreswear thy foolish ways...old now is Earth and none may count her days." "Earth shall be fair, and all her people One- not til that hour shall God's whole will be done." Amen. Marana'ta Yeshua! Marana'ta!

  • Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaloney

  • slowly I turn, step by step, inch by inch...

  • superman jesus ftw!

  • @GirlzPowa The "Superman" image is appropriate because like the discples did, the kids in this movie follow a 'role model who seems larger than life'... someone who seems hard to believe for some.

  • i love this song!

  • i did Turn Back O'Man in my high school play....we did this like we were two rival gangs joining forces XD

  • we're doing this play next year at school, I want to be joanne SO bad!!!

  • Ahaha How funny if it would've been if he would've decked him.

  • Favorite song of the movie - love it

  • umm... i think this is officially too weird for me.

  • @MissNophi2U

Sweetie, wait 5 years and watch it again. Your life will change so much...and this movie will mean a lot more to you!

  • @koreateacher96 what happens in 5 years?

  • @MissNophi2U You turn 17.

  • @DaughterOfWhite really?! that would be an amazing if that were he case. by then my life would indeed change, since i would have managed to find away to drastically reverse time. this would make me a living hero, who's word is respected worldwide, and i can then say with conviction that godspell is crap.

  • i keep expectingto break out in an orgy...

  • I <3 GODSPELL!

  • anyone wanna run around town in goofy outfits and sing songs and tell Bible stories with me? :)

  • @MDSDKSMDBDNDGD

    I willl!!!

  • @MDSDKSMDBDNDGD just gimme a call. im there

  • @MDSDKSMDBDNDGD Totally! We should do it in Boston, NYC already has too many weird things happen LOL, that would be interesting.

  • @happylmc We'd just look like street performers; Boston has plenty of those.

  • @MDSDKSMDBDNDGD I'm already wearing the face paint, where you wanna meet up??

  • Every Easter my Mum drags out this film and I anticipate it each time.. I love the music and the little skits they do are amazing..By far my favorite interpretation..Thanks for sharing!

  • I am a christian and i grew up watching this movie. I love it. I think that some parts are really wrong but others are a great interpretation.

  • His Word is true - try reading it :)

  • in the play i saw John/Judas, during the phone thing, said "its for you. its your father" and Jesus hung up on it!

    I love these plays.

  • @ssbbmaniac some one did the same thing at the play at my school

  • It's not 'bullshit'....I think you might agree with me that on some level the things he is saying help to make everyone happier than they would be without this knowledge, atheist or not atheist.

  • No, I disagree. No level I can think of that makes bronze-age totalitarianism a "happier" proposition in any conceivable way. Instinctive human morality needs no bullshit whatsoever.

  • Well, to each their own opinion.

  • Very true. Although Catholics still have the Pope....

  • I'm also an atheist. After watching this for the first time on Bravo in the middle of the night years ago I think this might be the only film that gets it right. If all believers were this detached from the miseries of the real world (and fun) I think I'd join them.

  • yes and we all have fro's too \o/ *hug*

  • there's no way to be a true believer and be totally detached from the miseries of the world. like in this scene, Jesus talks about how the true "sheep" are the ones who cared for the sick, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and visited those in prison. the cool thing about being a believer is the hope that you have for when you leave the "real world" and spend eternity in joy and fun with your Savior

  • Aestros909 , I appreciate the thought. From a Believer, i look for those Godspell moments in my life and I find them often. : > If more believers had fun with their faith...!

    Have a great day.

  • As I said, I thinks it's lovely...nice to see the Twin Towers intact...

  • Our pastor of the day when this movie came out was one of the most conservative in the state. The church was a literal hole in the buckle of the bible belt. But our pastor realized that the youth was the literal future and he allowed this to be shown in the fellowship hall on a Sunday night on 16mm. We all sat in sweat as this scene played hoping he wouldn't shut it down. He didn't react. Didn't say a word. He let us do other movies as they came out.

  • yeah a lot of people think that turn back o man is supposed to be sexual, when really it's just meant to be silly; slap stick if you will.

  • It's _FUN_!!!!!!!!!

  • i remember this line when someone slaps your left cheek turn and offer your right cheek it means if someone hits you dont hit back it really helps sometimes

  • "Turn Back O' Man" is a great song!!!

  • i am auditioning for this show this week and this is the part i want. hahah>

  • what is linda thigpen doing in 1:48 i don't know.

  • I guess it's a thing with her and Jesus 'cause she did it when Jesus said goodbye at the last supper.

  • each of the characters gave "him" a special "sign" - and it is shone at the end of the movie :)

  • I wish Learn Your Lessons Well was in the movie.

I get to sing it in my school's musicall. The actual musical production is in a different order.

This part is more toward the end of the showw.

  • does it look like Victor doesent want to be there? and look 9:03 (background) does it look like David and gilmer have a thing? there are other clues in the movie.

  • i love when victor says:

"Hahaa, sorry, no goats" at 1:57 x)

thanks for the film i really love it :)

  • @Luxiiiichuchiiii Baa-aaaloney.

  • @Luxiiiichuchiiii I love when Jeff says:

" Baaaaaloni " after Victor says that.

  • That heart at 7:47 is the biggest fail. Ever.

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite of the songs. :D

Shes really pretty and has a great voice

  • Why?

  • im doing godspell play too! i go to our savior new american school

  • in our play we beseech thee is right after the sheep and goat thing, it's funny too caussee one of the cast members is trying to get to that sheep side because she wants to goo heaven ahaha :) jesus is like "Hey you! get back there... your a badd goat " :D

  • Comment removed

  • oh man this is the best little show :)

  • ahahah!!! l love the parts at 0:19 3:13 and 3:28 :)

  • Do you think there is a subtle message to the ones who were in punishment, right when he came back to them, smiled, and said "Come on"?

  • hehehe, I love this movie/play so much. :)

  • My school is doing Godspell Junior. It is way different than the original. It is much better although this one will be easier. I am still working on the play!! Any tips comment me!!

  • I just did Godspell, but in a more modern era shall we say and my advice is look at the script and picture yourself as your character and say how should be that character

  • woaah

our school turn back o man

    is soo much sexier

  • ahahah sammee ;)

  • my school is doing this musical,

and it hink wer better :D

    sorry guys

    our judas is reallllly funni

  • I played Jeffrey for this play. It was a lot of fun for me.

  • me too, he has so many great lines. His song is also the best.

  • love the lady with the tiger puppet!!

  • The play we're doing of this is different. Learn your lessons well, Light of the world, All for the Best, All good gifts, and Beautiful City are before this...

  • I love his weird voice. It makes me very happy.

  • haha i luv how hes about 2 say Jesus christ when he's right there XXDDD

  • I think this works better as a live production, they seem rather creepy in this film.

  • i agree. im currently in a production of this, and there is so much improv left up to the actors that it really needs to be done on stage. plus the fact that this movie is set in new york kinda turns me off. we're using a very simple stage. just 2 plateforms on the sides.

  • I love how he bounces himself off just before the song.

  • I love this musical!!!!! I saw it for the 1st time a few weeks ago and liked it 4rm that point on.

  • I'd love to see a live production of it. My parents were surprised I'd never heard of this show before (I am in my early 20s). I don't think any school near me has done Godspell in recent years (although my high school did do Jesus Christ Superstar 5 years ago).

  • I love how Joanne pulled the scarf out of her little bag. That made me happy and joyful.

  • OUr church is doing some songs and pieces frome this movie

  • Is this the proper entrance to Juilliard?

  • they missed we beseech thee!!@%

  • GAWD I wish they hadn't cut Learn Your Lessons Well from this movie!!!!!!!!

  • Before Constantine made the practice of Christianity legal it still flurished and grew...in many ways Christianity has never recovered from Constantine. It then became in many ways a tool of the state.

  • When the Church sold itself to Mammon, via Constantine, then began its sad trajectory away from Christ. "You cannot serve God & Mammon".

Of course Constantine was not even a Christian, as he was not baptized until on his deathbed:p

....and the Donation of Constantine was a Vatican forgery, using Xt as a corporate logo & medium of control.

Instead of master, teacher, Messiah, and God....

  • I'm sure I follow everythign you say but I think we agree. :-) Peace

  • ...When the Persians conquored India it seems very possibly that a lot of the Sanscrit writtings may have been changed to suit the new ruler's authority, perhaps with Budhism as well. Too many cooks stirring the pot as it were. You might dig up a book entitled: "The Book Your Church Does Not Want You To Read". They quote a lot of Thomas Paine and Thomas jefferson, and some others; you might get a shock!

  • LOL! If you study the REAL history behind these "gosphels' you might find a supprise. Assuming any of those Apostiles were real i nthe fkirst place their gosphels were written long after they were dead. Christianity was created by the Emporer Constantine in 454 A.D.; almost 500 years later. I do though get the same idea that Krishna and Budda shared the same fate as Christianity: re-written to match the desires of some king or emperor in another land....

  • I find that I must disagree with you here. State Christianity was founded by Constantine. Christians had existed before then, though they were a theologically diverse group. The state brought some unification, mostly through stamping out the heretics.

A side note, proper spelling adds credit to your argument.

  • A correction: Constantine was the first to make Christianity the official religion of Rome, not create it. He couldn't create something he was converted TO.

  • As I said, State Christianity. Christianity had previously existed as a string of pseudo-Judeaic cults. Constantine established Christianity as a major world religion in the sense that he was the first to allow and encourage the spread of Christianity. As a belief system it had existed for some time, but as an organized religion it was not quite there until the time of The Holy Roman Empire.

  • That's an outlie untruth. The gospels are solid historical documents. Christianity was definately NOT created by Constantine however he is famous for being the first Christian Emperor. Before the Christians suffered horrible persecution under Roman law. We know that Paul himself as well as Peter were persecuted probably under the Emperor Nero. You should dig in and study it, it's just as historical as the history we have of the second world war.

  • the girls all sing lake men way low wowowowow

  • did i hear her say hard as a rock meaning his wong thats offensive

  • No, no, no, silly! He's posing as a STATUE - hence "hard as a rock. Not any body part.

  • pause at the end to lol

  • lol at 5:38

  • I've always felt this more in line to Krishna, and not Christ. Perhaps more to the Real Truth and not the made-up one of the Emperor and the Gay King James.

  • That's odd, because this comes straight from the Gospel of Matthew, I don't know much about Krishna, I'll admit to that, but I do know that this closely pertains to the gospels of Christ, specifically Matthew's. And note that it isn't by an emperor or a king, it was his disciples whom wrote it.

  • Lynne Thigpen!!! *Goes crazy!* I may be young but I remember her and thought she was the best actress to have ever existed :) Rest in peace "Chief".

  • baaaaaaloney!!!!!! haha i love this movie

  • Turn Back O Man is so fun and irreverent, but if you listen carefully, it has a very righteous message.

Also... is that a first glimpse of Jack Barstow I see at 8:19?

  • Will I go to Hell for finding Jesus attractive :P

  • if that is true, then I'll have to go to hell too. :)

  • thats an awesome heart...on the window!!! <3 haha

  • Merrell Jackson is just SO beautiful...

  • I blaim Victor Garber in this movie for my love of tall skinny men as an adult.

  • Agreed wholeheartedly.

  • Agreed--that neck!!!

  • i LOVE this part. i especially like how they say "step by step" etc.

  • victor garber is sooo cute!!! how old was he?

  • I love the tunnel part, it makes me happy. Watch Victor Garber's movements. He is very gangly and a bit awkward in his movements. I love it.

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

  • The girl who sang this song in the play Godspell at my local high school just blew me away.

  • don't get still............

  • I never noticed before how it says 'drat' on the wall where Judas is leaning. interesting...

  • Wow, so it does. Hmmm I wonder if they are trying to say something.... lol

  • I like when she says Lord If I known it was you I would have bought you a cup of coffee. in her funny voice

  • i love the scene in the tunnel.

    So random.

  • her mannerisms are so cute! I love how she's like a flapper in this song

  • this is my favorite song in godspell. is it katie who sings it? whoever it is she is SOOO pretty! i wish i looked like her!

  • If you mean "Turn Back O Man" I think her name is Joanne.

  • oh yeah, duh, i should of looked at the credits. i guess i thought she just looked like a katie

  • of course it has great music! steven schwartz (who also wrote the music for Wicked, Prince of Egypt, Pocahontas, Enchanted, and others) wrote it! wOOt!

  • xD As much as I dislike the christian religion, and the concept of this show... The music is amazing. Same for Prince of Egypt.

  • im not really a religious person but this movie has some awsome music :]

  • Damn straight it does!
