Honorable Mention: Louis Armstrong: While his style does not speak to me AS much as the other guys, he completely revolutionized jazz and i nonetheless love listening to his music
Without question Tom is one of my favourite trumpeters. All his problems aside he has to rank among the great players but I think his writing is astonishing. Glass Mystery is one of my all time favourite tunes and deserves to be better known. Great stuff.
this is a great solo/ video. thank you for posting this. It is so nice as a young aspiring musician to have such readily available influences. Thank you!
Tom is indeed one of the greats. His difficulties sometimes have gotten in the way of his garnering the recognition he so richly deserves. We who have either played with him or learned by listening to him, find so much material with which to work. By all mean listgen to all he has to offer, for you cannot help but grow by the experience.
Sorry! But I hate that kind of err, destructive drumming. Tom Harrell surely is one of the best, a real musician's musician. A very inventive, and very inspired trumpet improvisor.
I also saw Tom perform at the Vanguard. He possess some of the most talent of any one I've ever seen or heard. In my mind he is one of the top three trumpeters of all time. His musicianship is astonishing, and he is truly an amazing performer. He is a jazz God, man
Its unfortunate that a musician of this caliber doesn't get more recognition. Tom is a true inspiration to all trumpet players, all human beings. I'd love to see more of Tom's stuff on youtube!
i had the honour of seeing tom play at the village vanguard last week, and can i just say how astonished i was to hear his playing and to find how relatively unknown he is outside inner jazz circles. as a fellow trumpet player i was enthralled by the whole setup, especially his tenor sax player. the whole band was tight, and tom's solos were so expressive. already i've taken inspriration from his unique style. 5 fav horn players: clark terry, lee morgan, roy hargrove, miles, guy barker
I was pleased to see your comment.I fear that there are SO many EXCELLENT jazz musicians, who rarely get the recognition they deserve!
The same situation applies in EnglandI have -I'm delighted to say a LARGE archive footage of Tom ( & virtually all "names".)I do my best to promote them ( no bread involved !!) via The Tube;My Web Site;Face Book ( I only DO music) & my additional private blog. Please contact me via my Site,as maybe I can help you ??
Indeed, !!. I was also interested & was gratified to see Eddie included there. In my estimation, he does not achieve the recognition his talent entitles him to.
If you want to properly "chew the fat" use my "Contact Me " page on my Web Site..also if you are desirous of an "eyes on stalks bag" I'll direct details of my personal footage archive of P.Woods Esq.. to you !
See you there ?? If so let me know what you think of my Web Site. All input is cool !
THANK YOU, TOM & ANGELA, and allthatjazzsamples for asking & posting. Tom is one of my all-time favorite jazz trumpeters. He is a genius and his playing is *always* beautiful. He is one of the reasons I kept my Conn Connstellation trumpet after all these years!

you mean the drummer is a bit too busy, doesn't let the solo breathe enough?
