There came lexus. And infinity, but that wasn't a concern at first. Lexus was able to mass produce cars on assembly with the same quality but for a much LOWER price

This tore Mercedes apart. They cut corners EVERYWHERE with the models made after 95. This is what led to them built shitboxes like these

OF COURSE they do fixing/repairs during the race. But this is one of the road going versions, it never raced. Its very close to a racecar though.

The best way for you to understand this car is to stop mumbling about Mercedes (which btw you are wrong about, its not 20 years, more like past 5) and realise this is a custom built AMG (performance division) vehicle, built right in Germany by the best engineers they had, which then went and KILLED the racing series because it dominated so badly.

Its every bit a reliable and incredibly high performance supercar. In fact, its probably the fastest supercar

At high performance they break down on a regular basis (ever wondered why so many have trouble in a 2 hour GP, let alone a 24 hour endurance race?) and because they have high power engines and transmissions and are not built for reliability they are not nearly as reliable over the everyday distances and speeds a normal car is.

Its more reliable during high performance obviously (normal car would destroy the engine, overheat its brakes and destroy its suspension if it tried to go round a track many times) but for normal everyday driving everything is under more strain becomes of the incredible power and stiff suspension etc

My friend has a 2006 Mercedes ML320 CDI which has been problem-free from the day he bought it. In the span of 5 years, Mercedes spent over $600 million into revamping and re-evaluating the suppliers, engineering, and build quality of all their cars and it shows. They vastly improved their reliability and this was when they were still "DaimlerChrysler AG".

GM, on the other hand, hasn't even begun to invest half that amount in their vehicles and I would have no problem with them "going under".

It is a pure race car. It is essentially a rolling research and development vehicle. There *are* no off the shelf parts, if they need a new part they have to MAKE it. Honestly if anyone were to make it right, Mercedes would be the ones to make it right. They prefer to replace the entire engine in cases like these, but ahem, they don't HAVE engines like these, they would have to manufacture 1 entire new engine, >$500,000 by the time their done. So I don't blame them.. its unfortunate, but...
