Actually, Pavarotti and Florez can be compared, they're both lirico tenors. Let's see, Pavarotti never learned to read music, never learned how to act past an elementary level, and never used his voice gracefully, only with brute force that sounded pushed most of the time. Check, check, and check for Juan Diego Florez. There is no competition between Luciano and Juan. JDF is in league with Bjorling, Corelli, Kraus, Caruso, Barioni, Villazon..Pav just doesn't compare.

Mr. Florez is without any doubt a great artist , however he is a "tenore leggèro" and I don´t think his voice is realy suited for drammatic roles such as Rigoletto.

Anche se Pavarotti rimarrà uno dei grandi tenori della storia dell'opera non si può togliere di bravura a questo tenore. Juan Diego Flores è fresco, vivace, come il personaggio che canta quest'aria nel rigoletto. Se qualcuno parla di Pavarotti solo perchè l'unico nome d'arte che conosce allora io gli consiglio vivamente di farsi un abbonamento a teatro e vedersi nn solo un Verdi, un Rossini o un Puccini ma tutta l'opera possibile e immaginabile!

its not that he cant sing the hell out of it, but even him singing the hell out of it is still smaller then the labeled "Verdian" Tenor. These voices are the ones built with the expected weight and tone for the material.

but a little objectivity helps. His vibrato is unstable. And he has what the Italians call "The little goat in the voice. A nervous diaphram in a young voice is probably the

rather to be very careful not to compare Apples to Oranges. It does little to help Opera to constantly say' OMG he is the

sound. round warm and forward. THe Met Often casts less

gifted singers in favor of popular over gifted. Mark Delevan' s Scarpia is among the finest . World Class Sound

great actor as well. Lets roll ! lol Tony Randall knew the Art

It is interesting to compare this performance with that of Caruso. Florez's singing is somewhat more nuanced, Caruso's more straight-forward, but the run at the end is more clearly executed by Caruso. Florez's seems a bit "muddy" when he dips down into the lower notes.

Verdi no se debe cantar en la misma posicion vocal que Rossini...es mas... ambas deberian tener la misma posicion pero no la de llevar tan a la cabeza la sensacion de la voz (como dicen algunos que se debe cantar Rossini)... se queda sin cuerpo, sin color... y suena simple..y claro, las consecuencias mas adelante en la voz. EL limite de repertorio no solo lo da el tipo de voz sino la tecnica.

Ayer estuvo aquí en Jaén cantando Juan Diego Flórez. La verdad es que fue un privilegio incomparable contar con su presencia aquí en España.

De igual forma que nosotros los españoles nos sentimos orgullosísimos de que por todo el mundo nos hayan representado tenores como: Plácido Domingo, Alfredo Kraus, José Carreras, Jaime Aragall... los peruanos deberían estar igualmente orgullosos de ser compatriotas del que a día de hoy es uno de los mejores tenores del mundo.

Juan Diego tiene una forma muy especial de interpretar esta canción, la forma como termina el 'muta d'accento' y comienza el 'e di pensier' es realmente fantástico, en todos los tenores se aprecia un respiro que en JDF es imperceptible. No se puede comparar con la de pavarotti por ser registros vocales distintos, pero nadie sabe en el futuro cuando pierda la claridad su timbre a lo mejor puede interpretar repertorio de tenor lírico.

La diferencia entre Pavarotti y Florez no es de registros sino de emision. Aunque Pavarotti fue perdiendo por andar cantando papeles pesados, igual siguio teniendo una voz mas apoyada en el cuerpo que en la cabeza... por eso suena mas robusta, mas color que la de Florez. Finalmente este ultimo admite que lo hace adrede para cantar Rossini... pero todo lo canta asi y ya se le escucha caprino en ocasiones. No es mi intencion que mi opinion se vuelva un debate ni peleas! ;)

You forgot to mention Pavarotti's favorite tenor, Giuseppe Di Stefano.Bjorling had an achingly beautiful voice, although I wouldn't count this aria among his greatest moments. Florez sings this magnificently, perfectly placed, fully supported, not a shred of strain, and spectacular end effortless high notes. He certainly is in direct lineage to every great tenor of the past.
