I love how it goes from "Vesuvius" to "Sufjan".. it makes you feel as if he really wants you to relate to his music, like how he's relating to Vesuvius.
Sufjan has gotten me through a lot. He truly is one of a kind :) <3
why top comments are about mac miller?I honestly don't give a fuck about him.
this song is incredible.every beat, every little "noisy" sound, the chorus, that kind of spiritual elevation that his voice reaches in the chorus, the flute "chaos",the drums, the WHOLE composition makes my heart ache.there's too much BEAUTY in this song, and "I feel like I can't take it".it sounds PERFECT to me.I'll never forget how I felt when I first heard it.and it's still giving me that extraordinary feeling. SPECIAL.
Alright I can't believe this. I like Mac Miller and I listened to this song having no idea it was the sample from his song. Why would people that enjoy listening to this type of music have this much anger for a music artist. You may not enjoy the music he makes, but what has he done wrong? He doesn't deserve people talking bad about him just for making music. Leave him alone and just enjoy the music you like, like I am trying to.
I had to look up Mac Miller because I'd never heard of him... um, he's really not that talented. Not as good as Eminem, and definitely not as good as Sufjan. He's kind of boring.
@vishalgossain1 Though I see your point, I maintain that the quality of music is subjective. If you said that comparing every song or artist were like comparing apples and oranges, then there would be no music awards. Everyone is different, across and within genres. Some, I like more than others. Even if he's not comparable to Sufjan, I think Mac is still comparable to Eminem and not as good. :p
my first reaction to this song was to hate mac miller for stealing the song, now i realize that he sampled it with permission. now it sucks cause nobody is listening or paying attention sufjan's amazing song and only worrying about why and how mac miller sampled this song.
@thejoelreinhardus Yeah, but pay attention to most everyone's music nowadays. Underground & Mainstream alike, most are become sampled and it happens to everyone. Sap just did what any producer would do, which is finding a goldmine like this and using it to their advantage before someone else did.
This song is incredibly deep. As a fellow christian I know exactly how sufjan feels. Faith isn't static, there are moments of revelation and there are moments of doubt. It is really hard to truely commit to a God you cannot see, thus the indecision between favoring earth or God. But if it were any easier, believing would not be as powerful as it is.
I love Come feel the Illinoise. I just don't understand this album. I question why he left his Indie-folk roots and headed in the terrible genre of electronica. I'm not saying this album is bad, in my ears, it's just not Sufjan.
@SilkyJohnstein I kind of felt the same until I saw him do Age of Adz live. It's not folksy or acoustic, but in terms of beauty, story and texture it's still absolutely Sufjan.
@wrytte you are objectively wrong. Talent, taste, etc are largely objective, you need to realize that. Our limitations of perception however prevent us from having a clear picture of these and the inability of most people to tell the difference between "good" and "bad" tastes, causes us to falsely believe in subjectivism.
I've never heard Sufjan like this. wow. I can feel the agony and it is literally explaining how i feel right now. Well put. I can't really explain how amazing this is for me right now. All I know is I love Sufjan. It's almost ugly at parts but that's what makes you really feel it.
Pretty much the most amazing album! I really love this song... And yes to compare to Lady Ga Ga... The reason he gets less notice then Lady Ga Ga is because the Emphasis that the Recording industry puts on some artist... Lady Ga Ga sells not only to women, but she sells as a sex icon... and that sells albums... Its not always about the quality of music. Lady Ga Ga is very musically talented and in fact trained musically, but by Far Sufjan Stevens is Musically and Lyrically more creative.
well he mastered both of these categories you say he falls into... and i like to listen to modern music most of all, besides this song is just as powerful as any good classical piece
this album is not interesting, its a masterpiece... youre just a fuckin square... and lol mac miller did NOT make a great song lolol so fake, the only person who did a sufjan beat any justice was aesop rock/star of wonder(which i think some dj mashed together)... anyway i came to say, im thinking about the movie the rocker and the great band Vesuvius
@AdamNoAnts Sufjan Stevens has very good lyrics, but most of his songs seem to fall into two categories: 1. songs where he sings a very simple, repetitive melody in a slow/soft voice and 2. songs that break into a sort of chant backed by instruments/effects (this song is one of these). People who like the fact that he uses so many instruments need to listen to actual romantic or contemporary period classical music if they want to hear great instrumental music that is emotionally moving.
It doesn't matter how right both those top comments are, this isn't Mac Miller's version. This is Sufjan Steven's version. Lets all say something relevant like how Age of Adz was a great album or how this song is pure perfection. I'm sick of seeing comments all over youtube of some pop-culture thing that isn't relevant to the video.
@Iambeowulf119 I think you mean the company who produces Mac Miller's beats has good taste in what 5 seconds of a song is catchy enough to loop for 4 minutes.
@TheSchimmi no. sap and mac heard the song and liked it. sap sampled it, i think with permission from sufjan, and then he sped it up and added some kicks and released it as one of macs best songs. and its not just sap. its jerm, sap, dan, chuck, and the rest of his crew. its a good song. no hatin.
@TheSchimmi Exactly! Good taste in music? Please... he probably just heard it playing on the radio somewhere and was just like "1. This is catchy 2. I should use it 3. ????? 4. Profit!"
@TheSchimmi actually its one of his great friends as of a producers known as Sap, and mac is an indy rapper so all what you said is irrelevant. watch some interviews get some real info then come back with a statement.
@TheSchimmi I think that people like you, who are generally condecending to music you don't like, are ruining music for people like me, real musicians. I play stuff like this, I have done jazz competitions. I rap.
quit acting like hip hop has no value, just because you don't see the art in it, doesn't mean its not art.
@JulianHuxtable Literally the second after i posted that i realized that, if anything, Mac Miller's sample (no matter how little i think of it) only served to make me appreciate Sufjan even more.
So if i'm ruining music for you, then you haven't realized the aforementioned. Frankly, i fucking love hip hop hence my anger towards Miller. Mac Miller uses cheap tricks and cheap lyricism to turn a profit. Or at least that is what his music sounds like, even if that's not his intention
@JulianHuxtable To go on, Mac Miller's look and sound gives off the impression that there is nothing to be gained from Hip Hop when the reality is quite the opposite. Artists like Miller that use the generic format to sell albums originally drove me to despise hip hop for years before discovering artists like Eyedea and Abilites, and Slug/Atmosphere.
Also, what do you mean "people like you"? Nothing good comes from social polarization. The irony of which is not lost on me.
IT WASN'T SAFE TO BREATH!!! ??? I wonder if he means like... air, maybe not, maybe we could ask him... We could look ourselves. Sufjan... are you feeling better? Im trying to get right with the lord.... I should get a life.... I love you... (as a brother....and such...) I love actually... Not like the perverted love.... But like... the I wan't to try and help.... get a life you know.... <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 .... <3 <3 <3 <3<3 <3 -peace. p.s. whats a atmosphere?
@XxAcidfilledcandyxX Vesuvius is a volcano that erupted (most notably) in 79 a.d. and killed a bunch of people. you see the symbolism now? and an atmosphere is all of the air around us up to about 100miles above us (before outer space).
see i knew donald trump before i ever heard this song, but ive always been a fan of sufjan so it was really awesome to figure out he sampled this. both are kick ass
@Peejay011 Again, WTF does that mean? Do you think he smoked weed when he wrote this? Could he not just be in touch with his feelings and know a little bit more than the average musician about music theory? WTF are you on about?
i absolutely love it how producers can find these songs and make amazing beats with samples. i want to be a music producer when i graduate next year and sampling is one thing i really really want to learn how to do and do well.
Wow I loved mac miller and i loved sufjan then i realized mac used sufjans song and got a ton of exposure for it sufjan should be getting the exposure!
@PlaystationMadden i still believe he will still get exposure because of mac miller because people like me are going to curious as to where mac miller's sample came from :)
All of you children complaining about someone sampling a song need to grow up. I will bet you any money that there's at least one song that you love that has a beat sampled from somewhere else that you don't know about. Artists have been doing this for decades and it's not an insult to sample a song. And I mean artists of all genres do this. Not just rap.
Keep in mind that whoever does the sampling NEEDS permission from the original artist. Sufjan GAVE permission to Mac Miller. Deal with it.
@OfMelodies Ditto. I was a Music major in college. It's been around for over a thousand years! Just check out the history of fixed melodies or, cantus firmi, in medieval composition.
did it ever occur to anyone that maybe sufjan stevens will get more fans cause of mac miller? and vice versa..lets not all get our panties in a bunch.
And for the rest of you complaining about how Mac ripped this. Get over yourself. I'm a fond listener of both Sufjan AND Mac Miller, as well as a lot of other groups. Just enjoy the music for what it is and quit bitching.
@morganlogan mac miller actually listens to some extremely good music, including sufjan, empire of the sun, and i could just go on and on. All i'm trying to say is that he loves this music just as much as any of us. He's not just some "stupid rapper", no need to bash, man.
k guys, yes mac miller sampled this song. get over it. sufjan is amazing, and that's all that matters. stop complaining because there's nothing you can do about it anymore, and just learn to enjoy sufjan for all the he is.
@jonascahillx3 what ticks people off is the fact that mac miller is getting more exposure than Sufjan, but what can we do, life is a heartless bitch, so we bitch about it a little, but what people need to learn is not to take it to the next level which is "personal" cuz that will gain them nothing but depression.
i don't know but what i like about sufjan is that he's Raw and Beautiful at the same time, the instruments he uses are unique and the lyrics are stories that are creepy, spiritual, pure its crazy.....I LOVE THIS MAN.
Thanks you mac miller for bringing all these retards who know nothing about music to this room of fine taste, way to taint a culture mac miller... Fuck off
To the retards who say Mac Miller stole this beat... He did not steal the beat he sampled the main melody there is a big difference. He did not take this whole beat... just the choir melody.. The original is really cool. but hands down mac miller's beat is way better... this is old sympathizing ..... sounds horrible
@GlassSm0keH0use Why do you feel the need to defend Mac Miller? He is alright, but he is nowhere near as talented as Sufjan Stevens. And this melody is 10x better.
@xTHEROOSTERSHOWx Agreed but disagreed... And I don't feel the need to defend Mac Miller I was nearly stating an opinion. I for one think a faster tempo to it made alot cooler not to mention the sample it self was remastered there for making it alot cleaner sounding. what can i say im a man of sound quality.
@GlassSm0keH0use I'm not sure you know much about mastering, and you're obviously not a man of sound quality if you think his version sounds better. Sufjan is a true artist with true conviction. He doesn't ramble on about being rich or smoking pot. He doesn't chase after trivial fantasies and obsess over "getting ass". He writes about the perceptions of a small boy growing up in west michigan, losing loved ones to cancer, and schizophrenic men living in trailers who've scared away their family.
@JoshuaCuthbert your kidding me right? any man with ears can here how muffled this entire song is? it has zero thump in the kick that's what happens when you record your drums on shitty ass mic's and you wanna talk about sound quality? and producer could hear this and go yeah way too much compression! I never said the original was horrible song itself all I said was when the beat it's self sounds cleaner threw today's age of music and technology compared to the original obviously it's better
uhh, i dont get how everyone is comparing mac miller to this guy... i love mac miller. but these two people have COMPLETELY different styles in music.. fucking idiots haha
@TheEmerald92 lol. Sufjan is probably one them if he allowed his song to be sampled by someone like mac Miller... Mac Miller has a story to sell.. and Mr Stevens story isnt less or more important than Mr. Miller's story.. so yea.. doh rage.. i like both of the artist. Mac Miller is REAL! and Sufjan Stevan is VIVID! THEY BOTH ARE GREAT.... :)
Who those fuck are these a-holes and why did they jack mac millers shit? Who the fuck has everr heard of the surfin stevens anyway. Man this is garbage. killed an awesome track. yall are NObody. Mac Miller shoud beat your guyses asses for this

@Peejay011 Again, WTF does that mean? Do you think he smoked weed when he wrote this? Could he not just be in touch with his feelings and know a little bit more than the average musician about music theory? WTF are you on about?

@TheEmerald92 dude chill. We all have our own opinions. I like this song. Just rap is more popular so mac miller is more popular.
828theking 5 months ago
i absolutely love it how producers can find these songs and make amazing beats with samples. i want to be a music producer when i graduate next year and sampling is one thing i really really want to learn how to do and do well.

OfMelodies 6 months ago 42
@OfMelodies Ditto. I was a Music major in college. It's been around for over a thousand years! Just check out the history of fixed melodies or, cantus firmi, in medieval composition.

did it ever occur to anyone that maybe sufjan stevens will get more fans cause of mac miller? and vice versa..lets not all get our panties in a bunch.
21farina 6 months ago 8
And for the rest of you complaining about how Mac ripped this. Get over yourself. I'm a fond listener of both Sufjan AND Mac Miller, as well as a lot of other groups. Just enjoy the music for what it is and quit bitching.
thundrcatsRgo 6 months ago
@morganlogan mac miller actually listens to some extremely good music, including sufjan, empire of the sun, and i could just go on and on. All i'm trying to say is that he loves this music just as much as any of us. He's not just some "stupid rapper", no need to bash, man.
thundrcatsRgo 6 months ago
k guys, yes mac miller sampled this song. get over it. sufjan is amazing, and that's all that matters. stop complaining because there's nothing you can do about it anymore, and just learn to enjoy sufjan for all the he is.
jonascahillx3 6 months ago
@jonascahillx3 what ticks people off is the fact that mac miller is getting more exposure than Sufjan, but what can we do, life is a heartless bitch, so we bitch about it a little, but what people need to learn is not to take it to the next level which is "personal" cuz that will gain them nothing but depression.
Rashonality 6 months ago
i don't know but what i like about sufjan is that he's Raw and Beautiful at the same time, the instruments he uses are unique and the lyrics are stories that are creepy, spiritual, pure its crazy.....I LOVE THIS MAN.
Rashonality 6 months ago
I'm a man of sound quality but I'd rather listen to a db white boy rap about how he's like Donald trump... Lol @ sampling his rectum
AdamNoAnts 7 months ago
Thanks you mac miller for bringing all these retards who know nothing about music to this room of fine taste, way to taint a culture mac miller... Fuck off
AdamNoAnts 7 months ago
To the retards who say Mac Miller stole this beat... He did not steal the beat he sampled the main melody there is a big difference. He did not take this whole beat... just the choir melody.. The original is really cool. but hands down mac miller's beat is way better... this is old sympathizing ..... sounds horrible
GlassSm0keH0use 7 months ago
@GlassSm0keH0use Why do you feel the need to defend Mac Miller? He is alright, but he is nowhere near as talented as Sufjan Stevens. And this melody is 10x better.
xTHEROOSTERSHOWx 7 months ago
@xTHEROOSTERSHOWx Agreed but disagreed... And I don't feel the need to defend Mac Miller I was nearly stating an opinion. I for one think a faster tempo to it made alot cooler not to mention the sample it self was remastered there for making it alot cleaner sounding. what can i say im a man of sound quality.
GlassSm0keH0use 7 months ago
@GlassSm0keH0use I'm not sure you know much about mastering, and you're obviously not a man of sound quality if you think his version sounds better. Sufjan is a true artist with true conviction. He doesn't ramble on about being rich or smoking pot. He doesn't chase after trivial fantasies and obsess over "getting ass". He writes about the perceptions of a small boy growing up in west michigan, losing loved ones to cancer, and schizophrenic men living in trailers who've scared away their family.
JoshuaCuthbert 6 months ago
@JoshuaCuthbert your kidding me right? any man with ears can here how muffled this entire song is? it has zero thump in the kick that's what happens when you record your drums on shitty ass mic's and you wanna talk about sound quality? and producer could hear this and go yeah way too much compression! I never said the original was horrible song itself all I said was when the beat it's self sounds cleaner threw today's age of music and technology compared to the original obviously it's better
GlassSm0keH0use 6 months ago
@JoshuaCuthbert to the ears of someone who've never herd either song.
GlassSm0keH0use 6 months ago
@KilgoreTrout1907 he didnt steal the beat he merely sampled the most noticeable part they made a beat around...

daionte2022 7 months ago
@seargeantnanner really? cause he has more fans and money then this guy. Its a new era of rap music. Music like this isnt nearly as popular anymore.
828theking 7 months ago
@828theking SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH. don't ever refer to Sufjan Stevens
as "this guy".
You Can't Understand what level Sufjan is on compared to Mac Miller. it's people like
you who promote shitty repacked hip hop to rise again and again. It's not popular because
people won't give it a chance. Money and Fame isn't what matters when it comes
to musical talent. New Era pfffffff.
TheEmerald92 6 months ago
@TheEmerald92 lol. Sufjan is probably one them if he allowed his song to be sampled by someone like mac Miller... Mac Miller has a story to sell.. and Mr Stevens story isnt less or more important than Mr. Miller's story.. so yea.. doh rage.. i like both of the artist. Mac Miller is REAL! and Sufjan Stevan is VIVID! THEY BOTH ARE GREAT.... :)
