Thus from a Korean's perspective, major fault lies on Lee (since there are disputes over the safety of 30+, he should have first acquired people's consensus regarding the issue), and minor fault also on the US who constantly required to accept 30+.
Well, there were a lot of talks about his bulldozer style, so I believe not it was either positive or negative. It wasn't an important issue.
And it wasn't Lee's idea to go to the US in April. (He admitted he intended more positive influence of his going to the US by signing the agreemnt just when he arrived there.) He planned to meet Bush in June, but it was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that persuaded him to go early in April, for the same reason as you said.

This issue passed a while ago but since i Just saw this, ill just say what I think. Koreans are(were) against the import not because they think it's unsafe; they got the info that the beef sent to korea would not be checked, and would be over 32 mths old(?)something like that.The economy also would go down for beef sellers because the beef from america are cheaper. Just not buying the beef? Unfortunately, they can't do that. Suppose they buy Korean beefs. Are they even safe enough just because they are called Korean beefs? Sorry if I talk about random stuff at the end. But I just want people to understand the real situation that our citizens are confronting with. We need to understand. That is why it is not easy just to protest with a group. It's more than that. Very serious. Some people even don't know about it... too sad.

The president already proceeded the import, and the poor citizens have no power to even be against with. They are busy enough to live their everyday lives. The real problem is right after the president made that contract, the citizens have no choice but try no to buy the cheap beef they were dependent on before: Korean beefs are expensive compare to those American ones, so how could poor Koreans do with this?

Not only the Korean government has a problem, but also the fact that the WFSO (World Food Safety Organization; I don't know what to call it so I refered this name) in Korea has a problem checking each food product's safety matter. Although your ideas are understandable because that was what I felt in a way, it is very difficult since not many people can get together to deal with the power of our government.

Korean protests against 30month or older beef is completely fair.
US govt IS BANNING Canadian Beef (over 30mo) as of July 7, 2008 because they've found a mad cow in June 08.
Why can't Koreans go against it?
NO OTHER countries buy 30month/older US beef, bones, and intestines(highly risky for BSE) like SKorea.
For example : mexico=24month, japan=20month.

As a Korean, this really makes me wonder. About a week ago, I saw the news how the US meat was imported into Korea. I actually thought it was a dumb idea when the people had fights with the political view. But then maybe I was the stupid one ? The meat was sold more than the original Korean beef. I currently live in the states, and cant really explain exactly whats going on in Korea.

BSE/vcjd is relatively a new "type" of disease and there hasnt much study done about the potential danger on that matter, ie alzeimer's and mad cow disease, etc. Making a decision that may "kill" is not a wise choice to make. japan, chia, mexico stopped importing 30mon because their gov refuse to do things that are potentiall dangerous.

To sum up my argument here:
1. US required Korea to accept 30+ for FTA ratification.
2. Lee wanted a speedy FTA ratification.
3. So Lee singed the document agreeing to accetp 30+.
Thus from a Korean's perspective, major fault lies on Lee (since there are disputes over the safety of 30+, he should have first acquired people's consensus regarding the issue), and minor fault also on the US who constantly required to accept 30+.

Well, there were a lot of talks about his bulldozer style, so I believe not it was either positive or negative. It wasn't an important issue.
And it wasn't Lee's idea to go to the US in April. (He admitted he intended more positive influence of his going to the US by signing the agreemnt just when he arrived there.) He planned to meet Bush in June, but it was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that persuaded him to go early in April, for the same reason as you said.

For FTA, it was good, but for signing the agreement, no; it was quite a dilemma, and the scales were turned in favor of FTA. Yes; FTA means A LOT to Korea.
But he just too much hurried; he didn't even mention A WORD about going to open the beef market. If he was going to sign it in April, he should have at least from some weeks before talked about it to citizens.
If they protested? Well, he should have pursuaded then; he's a bulldozer also in pursuasion. He missed the only chance. So sad.

It has already been established that the risk of contracting BSE is much larger for Koreans. But the reason is not due to Pringles, although they are a very tasty treat, it has more to do with the size of the male reproductive organ. It seems that the risk of contracting BSE is indirectly proportional to the size of said organs. Therefore, the more well-endowed one is, the lower the risk of contracting BSE, no matter how old the beef is. Thus, Americans have low risk, Koreans are very high risk.

I agree; we Koreans voted him as President, and thus we should take responsibility for our own ballots -- to criticize him if he does wrong, but at the same time to help him get it through the predicament.
But one thing you got it wrong is that he won by a landslide 'despite' the fact that he was known as a bulldozer, not 'because.'
At that time the primary issue was undoubtedly economics, and candidate Lee, a former CEO, seemed apt despite his several defects, including the BBK disputes.

One thing I in turn would like to tell you is that, despite disputes over the safety of 30months+, it's widely accepted that it's better to avoid 30+ if possible. Thus Japan imports 24-, China 30-, and the US 30-. But (I still do not understand why) the US has constantly asked Korea to accept 30+ to get FTA ratified, ever since the Rho administration. Thus the 'Bush forced Lee' story isn't in fact just a story, although of course there's been exaggerations.

1. It's the 'risk' that also matters. People do not like risks -- thus all those insurance companies you know. The chance is low, but still there's a chance, and that's also why USDA, issuing 'Federal Register' effected in Jan.12 2004, prohibited SRMs of 30months+. (In case of the small intestine, that of all ages prohibited.)
2. In fact the current agreement does not prohibit all SRMs registered by FDA (April, 2008) such as cervical vertebrae.
So there is de facto a point of contention.

한국인이 쇠고기 수입을 반대하는건.. 검역과정이 명확하지 않기 때문이기도 하고, 30개월 이상 소를 수입해서 .. 단지 자국의 이익만을 원하는 미국에 대한 반대이기도 합니다. 단 0.0001퍼센트라도 광우병에 걸릴 확률이 있다면 한국 정부에서는 국민을 생각해 줘야 한다고 생각합니다. 만약 한명이 걸리면 그땐 누가 과연 책임을 져 줄까요? 정부? 미국측? 이미 걸리고 나면 소용이 없습니다.그것이 온 국민이 반대하는 이유이기도 합니다 이렇게 반대를 하는데 왜 미국측에서는 그렇게 팔려고 하는것이며 이명박 대통령께서는 왜 국민의 뜻을 받아 들여 주시지 않는걸까요? 국민의 80%이상이 반대를 하고 촛불문화제까지 열었는데 말입니다!

외국분들과 토론을 하다보니 우리 국민이 광우병에 대한 막연한 불안감만 가지고 있을뿐, vCJD, SRM 및 프리온에 대한 이해도가 현저히 낮다는 걸 알겠더군요. 매스 미디어에서 나오는 정보다 100% 옳다고 할 수 없고요.
물론 가능성이 있는 것은 확실하기 때문에 저 역시 이명박 정부를 비판하고 있습니다만, 우리 국민이 조금만 더 깊은 과학적 관심을 가졌으면 좋겠습니다. 버시바우가 완전히 틀린 말을 한 건 아닙니다.

Most problem was came from the USA government's policy,which part of USTR(United States Trade Representative) They have lots of horrible exaction. I'd like to ask a question, purely for information's sake.
I do believe American beef of 30 months- is safe. Yet I have doubt on that of 30 months+ and on SRMs.
Does your claim on the safety of American beef also encompass beef of 30 months+ and SRMs?

This whole situation is fairly interesting though. Amazing how powerful the people are in South Korea because it is looking like they will be able to shut the whole process down. This will also probably lead to the whole shutdown of the FTA with korea that has been on the table. To be honest I like it, my beliefs follow those of this Dena Hoff (google her and research). Keep the power of the ranchers/farmers in their hands, no matter what country. Before you kick back i suggest you learn.

there is absolutley no threat of madcow because we stopped feeding dead cattles to the cows! 99.5% was a statistics when the Cows did consume dead cattles NOTE THIS ****BACK IN YEAR 1999****
