I understand most of these defining aspects of the guard... steel, history etc. but compassion? A fallen guardsman is often left to rot, Commisars kill their own men without consideration, and Lord-Generals send thousands of men to their deaths to secure meaningless trifles. Might I add that the Munitorium is so uncaring it rarely bothers to ensure the specialist squads it sends into battle are properly allocated? Catachan are sent into deserts for the Emperor's sake!

That thing you saud about Generals sending them to their deaths, that depends on who you serve under, its like todays armys, some generals or commanders don care about the cassulties, also. when you are pitched against the horrors of the universe, i dont thing anyone whant to help their fallen comrade when their is a Tyranid Charge comming in.

@deadfichboat my point is just that compassion is not the Guard's strong point. If you read about the Battle of Armageddon, you'll see that during the first Ork invasion bio-weapons were so carelessly deployed they massacred thousands of the guardsmen they were meant to protect. Granted, Van Straub was later declared a traitor, but his callous disregard for human life was far from extraordinary.

@drouinfrank2 The Imperium of Man basically entered a 'Dark Age' before the arrival of the Emperor and alot of its technology was set backwards because infighting and such occured. It wasn't even an Imperium during this time, just massed world wars on their own homes.
