  • this is the only movie i've ever seen of him, but goddammit, how fucking fascinating River Phoenix was. i somehow regret being born after his era.

  • siempre me quede preguntando Q pasara con Mike?

  • Comment removed

  • Pogues!

  • What in the blue blazes did I just watch??!!

  • please tell me i did not dream this all, but once there was a network named BRAVO, and they played this movie all the time and had twin peaks marathons and showed beautiful winona as a plucky cabby...can anyone verify this for me, did anyone else grow up feeling bravo was too good to be true...is this the karmic inflation of our times???

  • I don't think this was real...it was a dream he had like Dorothy did in The Wizard Of Oz...

  • I also pretend that it was Scott who put him in the car because it will be nonsense if Scott just change for the money a left the boy that was in love with him like that....Is a good movie but Scott was so wrong by doing that..because that was his reality not THE MONEY WORLD HE DIDNT WANTED AT FIRST AND NOW HE ACT LIKE HE LOVE IT

  • This is one of the weirdest movies I've seen in my life, still, I liked it and I don't know why, 'cause I didn't really understand anything.

  • I have never been so confused by a movie before

  • thanks for posting.

  • I've been spat on and shat on and raped and abused.

  • Havent read the entire thread, but there is a lot of speculation that Mikey is based on Cobain...

Oh, and two of the kids, who were meant to play Mikey and Scott in the beginning, were actual street boys just talking about their day to day life. Sad huh?

  • maybe it was his mum

  • I've lost 50+ friends and acquaintances due to drugs. I myself have been clean 12+yrs and every now and then i hear another has died. Don't do drugs, don't even "experiment", in the end you realise too late that the high is'nt worth it.

  • @offwiththefairies77 depends on the drug depends on the person

  • You young people remember this: you think it can't happen to you but

you fool with drugs, or even with friends who do drugs, and your life

may be over before its hardly started.

Wonder what River is thinking now, because now he has eternity to

think..."If only...what if I hadn't", but its too late. The body dies & the

soul leaves, but the part that's really you lives forever.

Take care of yourselves, loves. I still wipe tears when I remember

the sweet boy that was River, and what was lost

  • @GooglFascists

I doubt River ever had a chance- he grew up as a member of "the family", was forced to have sex from the age of four and then thrown to the hounds of Hollywood!

I cried when he died, and cried even harder when Cobain died, but the death that hit me the hardest, was that of Corey Haim! Fame comes at a price- you surrender soul ,mind and body, just so, when you are no longer needed, you either get thrown off the freedom train, or they let you slowly spiral downwards.

  • In the original script is was Scott, and in the initial filming of the film it was Dick.

  • What's the song there in the credits?

  • @dRowNingkAt The Old Main Drag - The Pogues.

  • @Cmdsouza It IS the Pogues! Awesome! I love them!

  • This was the 4th movie I've watched this week that has RIver Phoenix in it. Great movie!!! <3

  • loved it!

That was totally scott who picked him up.

  • thanks a lot for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it was his dad who picked him up

  • scott scott scottt why?

  • SCREW YOU SCOTT, YOU USED TO BE COOL!

  • Have a nice day

  • Thanks for uploading this! loved the movie. :)

  • I watched this the other night. Good movie. But the best bit for me was the soundtrack... listen to the song from 6:04 onwards, it's pure poetry. 'Deep Night' by Rudy Vallée. Amazing.

  • a true conundrum.....falling asleep on the middle of a lonely road.

  • River Phoenix,Kurt Cobain,James Dean,Heath Ledger...

....only the good die young :(

  • Amazing, beautiful film...

Gus Van Sant will forever be my favorite filmmaker

  • i loved this film. im a little confused and will probably re-watch it several times but its very poignant and heartfelt and weird and wacky and frightening in some senses. wish river was still around to make films like this that make us think!

  • God damnit River....why aren't you still here?

  • I'm not going to lie, this movie was disappointing but I wanted to see the film that pushed River's drug usage to the edge. I read somewhere that after he did his male prostitute research for this film, he began using more often. He did a great job. I can feel his pain and I'm depressed after having watched this. I will definitely have to see this again because there is a lot that I did not understand. I wish he was still alive. I can imagine he would have continued being an amazing actor.

  • Such a heartbreaking movie. One of my favorites, though.

  • Man, for a second I really thought that those two guys were going to help him. Well, human kind sucks.

  • I'm sorry for the many posts. System here is kinda malfunctioning. But do some of you see my point? If you do or don't, I like to hear your thoughts on it. :)

  • It looks like the clothes he was wearing are the same clothes he wore earlier when he was with Mike. I'm guessing that the reason he put his old clothes back on was to be more presentable to him. And even though it was very far, his walk looked solemn

  • Now, if that person IS Scott, here's what probably happened. Somewhere between the funeral scene and the ending, Scott's guilty conscience was becoming unbearable. He might have realized what a class A asshole he was to Mike and might have never forgiven himself if something awful happened to Mike. Which prompted him to go look for him

  • He's still laying there unconcious and seemingly oblivious to what happened. Poor baby. Then, a car pulls up right beside him as our POV is at a very far distance. The person gets out, walks straight over to him, checks on him, puts him in the car, gets back in and drove off.

  • Michael is out wandering and wondering on the highway again. Only he seems to be having some sort of a positive outlook on his life. But when he has one of his nepoleptic(excuse me if it's not the right term) seizures, it gives us, as the audience, concern. Then the two theives stole his belongings yet didn't physically harm him.

  • Not to mention the fact that he broken his trust and ultimately failed him as a friend. I think him(Mike) indulging in those crazy activities with the others is, in a wierd way, showing where he belongs and staying true to himself. Which brings me to the next and final scene.

  • Again, notice that the looks they were giving eachother. Scott was the one that was giving the longest look at Mike which may be an indication that somewhere inside, he feels TERRIBLE for abandoning him and feels ashamed. Mike was giving him a few looks which might have meant that he might be moving on with his own life despite not having found his mother.

  • For some strange reason, to me, he looked kinda at ease and as if he realized he may be better off without him, even after all he's gone through. And him happily frollicking about with his buddies is possibly his own way of saying, "I'm freeing myself of you." and making him feel bad/jealous to which I think worked.

  • It seemed like Mike was looking back at him but it seemed only a few times. I maybe looking too much into this but bear with me. Notice the way Mike was looking back at him, even when he was playing with the flower. His look at Scott seem to say, "You know, I don't give a f*#$ anymore and that's okay. You hurt me but that won't stop me from being me, bastard."

  • Bob's funeral was really wild. Maybe it's just me but even though Scott was looking at the direction of the other funeral, the way his POV didn't seem like he directly see Mike and vice versa. Nearly the whole time, he was looking at them 'paying their respects' in their own way and I'. See, it looked like he was, if he saw him, looking directly at Mike.

  • I apoligize for the longevity. This is just an explantion I came up with dealing with the ending. I may be wrong andit's all right you guys disagree. I'll start with the funeral scene. Scott was at his dad's funeral and there was a funeral for Bob to which Mike was at.

  • And the way the person checked up on him and picked him up was perhaps similar to Scott doing that. Also, if you don't mind me saying, the car he was driving in looked old-fashioned yet new. And it's possible that wealthy people own any type of cars of their tastes.

  • Also, why at the end the guy stopped right beside Mike as if he knew where Mike was going to be? I think that's the implication that that person KNOWS Mike. And the clothing does seem similar to what Scott was wearing earlier in the film.

  • Btw, is it wrong that I think the person who got Mike at the end is Scott? I could be wrong but even though it was from a far distance, the guy looked like he had very dark hair and walked a certain way. Like someone said, he looked like he was wearing clothes similar to Scott's.

  • I just saw this film on IFC and I loved it! River and Keanu both did a fantastic job! I hate that River didn't go on to do other great things in his life because of drugs. He was an amazing and lovely actor.

  • NEVER MIND it was his dad. Look up the bonus ending it on YouTube.

  • I loved this movie but I'm gonna say it was Scott in the end who picked him up it looked like his jacket from far away. But may it was his dad.....

  • @eternalphatkid I'd like to think that Scott picked him up too ...

  • This is the first time i've ever seen this film, I don't understand it at all. Can anybody explain?

  • amazing :]

  • thanks so much for uploading this movie, newkidsbabe!

  • I know contractors in the Pacific Northwest who try to help kids like that. There are so many, from families just like that, who are so lost. I've heard ongoing stories about these people that have lasted for years. I don't know if my friends ever manage to make a difference.

But I've been told I am unable to see beyond accumulation of wealth. This final scene was helpful as a conceptual model. Just helping someone get farther down the road is what counts. The movie's content was a surprise.

  • "This road will never end. It probably goes all...around...the world..."

  • people can relate to this movie on so many levels Scott's conflicts with his father mike being in love with Scott but Scott only seeing him as a friend and then falling in love with someone else or Scott finally inheriting his fathers money then being successful and turning his back on mike and his other street friends mike's search for his mother these situations have happened to us all in our life's which makes this movie very powerful.

  • that's an amazing movie.

  • This movie was bizarre. I was like wtf? most of the time. It was so disjointed and I wasn't quite sure what the tone of it was. But there was some incredible acting in it and I liked the idea of it. It's definitely an original, worth watching for River fans and for anyone in general. Thanks for posting them. I appreciate it.

  • I think this is an ending where you get to chose what happened to him. Maybe it was Scott and they lived happily ever after, maybe it was another old man hiring him.

It was such a brilliant movie, and I think it's safe to say River is one of the greatest actors to have ever lived.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie, and gus' directing. Not a single complaint <3

  • He didn't find his mum?! *sob*

    River Phoenix ♥

  • fantastic, i havent watched this in years what a glorious actor River was, so so so fuckin cut up again after all these years, shouldnt have watched it again, what a tragic loss .

  • Watched this for the second time on here.

Loved it even more, and understood it a little more too.

    Great performance by Phoenix.

    :-)

  • ill just pretend that that was scott who put him in the car and took him home :)

  • @11jansza - the jacket the person is wearing looks just like Scott's jacket......but who really knows wo picked him up or wear he's going next... :]

  • i love river

  • thank you fo uploading this movie it was very good. River Phoenix was amazing.

  • the other day i was watching stand by me. i fell in love with the guy playing chris chambers and had to find out who he was. when i found out his real name was river phoenix i had to know more about this guy. looked him up and google and discovered he had died 16 years ago. the very morning of the day i was born. anyways... thought that was interesting and had to tell somebody. but i was sad to find out that he had died in the prime of his career. r.i.p. river phoenix. you were an amazing actor.

  • @shortyluvsgreen Stand By Me is one of my favorite movies. I fell in love with River after that movie.

  • @SaRaBeTh619 Me too!

  • I'm not sure whether or not he (Mike) died. I hope not, I hope he found happiness and his mom. :( Well, R.I.P. River Jude (Bottom) Phoenix. We love you, always and forever.

  • oh mike.. rip river

scott was an asshole >=( if only this was true, i'd go to scott's house and give him a piece of my mind >=O

  • GOD I LOVE RIVER

  • It is funny but we will never know who helped Michael. At least he was not left alone, barefoot and penniless "sleeping" on the highway. Probably it means that he will always be given an opportunity for a better life. I know very well that this analysis sounds strange but it is a beautiful explanation for an ugly and sad ending. Thanks a lot to SAMHELLW for his comment.

  • such an amazing film ...

  • I love Mike R.I.P. Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike

  • ok well thats a weird ending. someone just takes mike. if scott was there he woulda helped him by now but hes a shit friend who only knows mikes condition and has gone off to live his rich life

  • i want to a happy final!

and i not understand the movie to 100%

    jjee is very stranger

im not speak english, and i not writing, is worst

  • Wack, overall.

  • WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END OF THE FILM? I MEAN, WHO HELPED MICHAEL?

  • @mariaperezsigfredo I am not sure the person who picks him up plans to help him ....

  • piece of shit

  • Wow very interesting movie. Loved it!!!

  • Thank you

  • Thank you so much for this! I loved River so much he was my hero.. This was his best movie Stand by me is the second for me anyway.. I will never forget him..

  • I think the guy at the end is just a stranger, though the first time I saw it I thought it was the Keanu Reeves character, since he is the one who recovers him everytime he faints.

  • The Pogues!!

  • so what happened to mike in the end? did he die? and also who was it that took his body?

  • @moviequeen91 we'llnever know ;] hopefully he was catapaulted into some new interesting situation far down the road...

  • i didnt get it at all anyway thnks :)

  • i didnt get it at all anyway thnks :)

  • river phoenix is such an amazing gorgeous talented awesome and stunning actor!! you will always be remembered...oh! and...I LOVE YOU RIVER!! :D

  • This is one of the greatest movies ever! Thanks so much for uploading.

River Phoenix was the best. he should have got an Oscar for this!

  • "This road, will never end." Omg what a quote. I love this movie! It was so amazing and so was River <3

  • I think the person who picks mike up at the end of the movie is his brother

  • first time I've seen this movie and I'm blown away, it's so good.

  • happy birthday lorenzo.

saw this for the first time. i'll be mulling over this for weeks now.

  • is the "have a nice day" written at the end a part of the movie ? or did you write it ?

  • It was actually in the movie :)

  • thank you very very very very much for sharing

  • Thanks for uploading the whole movie...well most of it anyway. I know some parts had to be cut.I'm a fairly new Keanu fan & River was so great. So sad about him &for Keanu to lose his best friend.I have to admit that I'm more a fan of happier subject matter& that this takes some more intellect to understand the complexities of it all. Lots of scenes are pretty hard to watch for me & it is so very sad what happens here. Do you think Scott acted as such to pay back his dad for not accepting him?

  • thank you so much for uploading - i love this movie!

  • Thanks for the movie :)

  • Thank you for uploading . Love this movie.

    Again Thanks.

  • whats the song called at the end?

  • @phomiffy 'The old main drag' by the pogues, its on the 'rum, sodomy and the lash' album, hope that helps dude.

  • thanks ;D

  • Did some random person just pick him up?? Crazy....

  • It's actually his brother that picks him up..it's the same car as when River n Keanu go to his house

  • @Panamena20 Oh, Thanks. :)

  • Thank you for the upload. This is a terrific movie!

  • i dont think keanu can act

    but river is mesmorising

  • @inspired47 That's because none of his characters are very deep.

  • Brilliant film, and the saddest Pogues song ever to top it off - fits it perfectly! Gus Van Sant's a genius.

  • thanks for uploading :):)

I loved this film - great piece of cinema

River was intensely mesmorising, I loved his performance - need to see more of this guy's work! :)

  • Gracias, buena película. Grande River!

  • I love this film ^^ Although I had to watch it twice to actually get it. xD Thanks for the upload!

  • @EmzSweeper I still doesnt get it XD can you help me understand the movie a bit better XD ?

  • it's a wonderful movie! river pheonix was a tremendous actor! thanks for the upload!

  • you're blues for the upload, love.

  • Thanks sooooo much for the upload!

wow dat was a great film, even if the plot is a bit confusing! i didnt think id enjoy it but it was totally great! Fab acting! Love mike. Rip River....legends lyk you dont come around often<3

  • thanks so much for the upload!!

  • was this even the proper version of the film or was it mixed up? i've never seen it before so i'd just like to know..

  • I was spat on and shat on and raped and abused

Perfect credit ending for a movie. Pogues way hayyy!

    Great movie!

  • it's scotty who picks him up, surely....the same jacket?

  • @skymadeofamethyst its his brother/father I think, its the same car.

  • this is my favorite movie.

  • I loved this movie. One of my favorites! I wish river hadnt gone so soon =(.

    R.I.P River Phoenix.

  • I watched a bonus ending on youtube and it showed his dad/brother was the person that picked him up.

  • How did this end? I'm slightly confused..

Who was that that picked him up? His mom? And where was that little house? Was that his moms?

    Someone please explain!!

  • It ended just the way you see it. Someone random finds him and picks him up, not his mom, so he'll probably either be taken advantage of or take care of. The house is his childhood home that he dreamt about in the beginning when he passed out.

  • Oh, thanks very much for clearing it up. :)

  • river was good in this but noone was oscar worthy. i agree with seanconnery9000, there wasnt any story line, and actually the characters werent even that believable. keanu reaves has the worlds most irritating voice as well. + RIP River +

  • what is "Oscar worthy"?

this movie's gotten a hell of a lot of awards and plenty of recognition at various film festivals and Phoenix got best actor at by the National Society of Film Critics. FILM CRITICS. not the industry's dumbasses making out the people choosing the oscar contenders who are mostly people working in the industry - people who basically AWARD THEMSELVES.

So what is oscar worthy? Most definitely not some dirty gay junkie hustler, proving that talent has nothing to do wt Oscars.

  • no me gusta nada esta pelicula

  • Wow. That was a depressing ending. XD

  • Oh poor River

    he was so talented.

  • This was depressing so I didn't really care for it.

I had no problem with it. It had good acting but the story was kinda nonexistant & yes I know what the plot synopsis was but it didn't really engage me if you know what I mean. Usually, I'm engaged when there's narration or philosophical scenes, etc. but I didn't hate or love this flick

  • Are yall serious? Sayin he deserve an Oscar for this? Just because u play a gay roll doesn`t mean u deserve an Oscar, cause anybody can play gay, I mean this wasn`t even Oscar material, I wouldn`t even vote this as a nominee, like I only enjoyed watching K.R. to be honest

  • wow

  • how did river not get an Oscar nomination for this?..stupid academy dont no talent when they see it some of the people that won Oscars are proof of that...

  • True very true

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this its a great flick thank you david

  • GREAT MOVIE!!!

    thanks :)

  • Okay so if you like this movie..there is an E-book by E.C Kasalivich, Called God Damn a Potato...that basically tells what happens after the last scene in this film...it give Mike his happy ending and it's comical in alot of ways like this film but it's also just as dark. Check it out if you wanted mike to be happy because the book was really good plus it's true to the characters in the film...ps it's all pretty much from Mike's POV though it's in third person.

  • This was excellent!! Thank you NewKidsBabe!!

  • wait how do u know it was his brother?

  • Comment removed

  • There's a deleted scene which shows the man in the car, and it's his brother/father.

Also, if you look back at part 7, you will see that same red car in his brother/father's yard. (:

Though without the deleted scene, I suppose it's up to the viewer.

  • This was one of the best 1990's movies I've ever seen.

  • Wow this was a great movie!! Keanu Reeves is sooo sexy!!

    Thank you NewKidsBabe!!!

  • i think Gus van sant wanted to do us a favor by turnung a bad end in a happy one, thus "have a nice day "...actually these things mostly end in atragic way :-(

  • yeah, but it was probably more a reference to river phoenix's character saying the end of that road looked like it was a fucked up face saying "have a nice day"

  • thank you so much for this! I've wanted to watch this movie for soo long!

  • Have a Nice Day...

  • ok that was worth watching :-)

  • Best ending line to any movie ever. Except maybe Boogie Nights.

  • I wanted so badly for Scott to love Mike... :'( The movie was way strange..but good in a..strange sort of way

  • this is a rather strange movie

  • Thank you soo much NewKidsBabe for putting this up.. iv wanted to see it for ages!

it was strange but i loved it!!!. by the end i thought- 'man.. i hope his life gets better'- then i realised it was just a movie. =P

    RIP River. <3
