Whilst he looks a prospect isnt he effectively the Belgian version of Fletcher? good athlete, great engine, hassles constantly. this is the job Fletch does.
Defour is not the Fletcher player type. He's good in harassing, he takes a lot of space on the field and never stop running but Fletcher does that way better than him. But on the ball, Defour is better : good passing, good shot, he can also dribble, ... But again, his best quality is his cleverness : he always plays simply, efficiently and by doing that, he's improving the quality of the whole team.
He's definitively a playmaker but not an attacking one, he has to play as a central midfielder, behind the offensive players. When he plays at this position, all his teammates improve their game cause he's always available and he plays for the team. You can see that in Standard : since three years, every time he's injured the team is a mess, and when he comes back, they win again.
If you want to compare with a Man U player, he's more like a Scholes :)

That's because most of the player's videos on Youtube are crap. 90% of the time, you only see the goals, which is really relevant only for strikers, wingers and attacking midfielders. Defour is a central or defensive midfielder, so all you can see in this vidz (his goals) is bonus. Scoring is not is main job on the field. He's the man who emerge in a midfield : never stop running, never stop harassing opponents, always available for his teammates, simple and efficient playing, ...
But the most impressive quality he has is his maturity. He started playing for Genk at 16, go to Standard at 18 and became captain at 19. And he's the best captain the Standard ever had. You'll never see him made a silly mistake on the field, lost his nerves, pick the wrong choice or that kind of thing. He's extremely smart. And he's got some good technical abilities too (not awesome, but good).
In fact it's simple, two players in Belgium worth any money : Lukaku and Defour.

To be honest I'd prefer for Hodgeson to buy Ever Benega, he's technically more gifted than Defour, has better tackling, and his vision is superb. I just feel as if Liverpool have enough players who can do Defour's job, J.Cole, A.Aquilani, S. Gerrard, even Lucas, although granted Lucas is not yet as good as the others. But we have not a single defensive midfielder, Lucas could do the job, but Benega would excel.
I hate the way people always just show the goals a player scored in these clips, even when the player isn't primarily a goal scorer. Steven Defour does not score that many goals, so to show us the 10 goals he scored in 95 games doesn't really give us much insight as to what sort of player he is. It's almost as ridiculous as showing only the goals in a clip you made about Vidic! Football is more complex than just scoring goals, it would be nice if more people appreciated that.

To be honest I'd prefer for Hodgeson to buy Ever Benega, he's technically more gifted than Defour, has better tackling, and his vision is superb. I just feel as if Liverpool have enough players who can do Defour's job, J.Cole, A.Aquilani, S. Gerrard, even Lucas, although granted Lucas is not yet as good as the others. But we have not a single defensive midfielder, Lucas could do the job, but Benega would excel.

I hate the way people always just show the goals a player scored in these clips, even when the player isn't primarily a goal scorer. Steven Defour does not score that many goals, so to show us the 10 goals he scored in 95 games doesn't really give us much insight as to what sort of player he is. It's almost as ridiculous as showing only the goals in a clip you made about Vidic! Football is more complex than just scoring goals, it would be nice if more people appreciated that.
