I just saw his clinic at the Chicago Drum Show. I wish he would have spent a little more time on how get a good sound in the studio. He did a little talking, but it was just plugs for his new CD. Otherwise, he just jammed along to some recordings of songs he played on. He is clearly a good groove player, but his solos were a little boring. Overall, I did get a few things out of it, but I was not as impressed as I thought I would be.
As a drummer, solid as a rock. As a person, kind of an asshole. Met him a few years back while working room service at a hotel he was staying in during the David Foster group tour. Seemed to care less about me or the fact that I was a fan of his and instead insisted on me selling him booze in spite of the fact that it was past 2:00 a.m and was not legally allowed to do so. Not gonna lie, my respect for him went way down hill after this chance encounter. Expected him to be way cooler. WRONG!
This guy was in my dad's high school. Creston HS '73. My dad loves 'Higher Love' and how ironic that he went to school with the very man who played on it.
This man has played on so many of my favorite songs, especially the ones when he was with Rufus. He's one talented, smooth cat. (Plus, he still looks great.)
this celebrity drummer knows how to tune drums, play with feeling, and compose interesting drum parts... thats more than i can say for the rest of them!!! thats why the rest aren't in bands that actually sell albums well, they just solo, solo, solo!!!
I saw JR at a clinic in 2009 in Columbus OH, my first chance to observe a pro in action. The technical stuff was great, but when he played the grooves, I saw how he got to where he is today.
JR 's with DW now..check out his promo ad video for DW custom shop drums..pretty interesting ! (It's a DW ) on youtube...also, Jr is a studio legend..his ;list of artists that he;s worked with is staggering !! also, i'm a little surprised at the size of his crash cymbals..they're pretty big, and i just didn't expect that from a session player..
This man (J.R) has a bad sounding kit, and doing a quite mellow inspiration on this solo, yet he is a highperformed studio drummer with a perfection in tightness and clean playing. Look up on records like with Erni Watts, Chaka Khaan, Greg Phillinganes and many others.. There He is the one.
Hey, this is weird! This man has a bad sound and doing a quite mellow soloing. yet he has performed on severell albums as a tight and machine´like drummer!? I don´t get it..
Look up his recordings with Ernie Watts, Chaka Khan, Greg Phillinganes and many many others
Great Player - Great groove!!!! ...and notice the lack of a double bass drum pedal!!! i have noticed personally that when I added double kick it retarded some of my playing and chops!
Most drummers rely on double kick to cover all sins and lack of great chops!.......But great players dont need double bass !!! Weckle , JR . Jo Jo meyer , John bonham and Stewart Copeland to name a few !!
Double kick is great ...but if u can paly well u can still kicj as with out it!
Agreed about some drummers relying on double bass to cover a lack of other chops. Weckl, though, does always have a double pedal on his kit. Other who don't - Carlock, Pridgen, Spears, Greb....
I don't think I've ever seen any play a snare effectively at that angle......Just goes to show you that technique ain't everything.......ie...Keith Carlock.
So right...if you just look at JR's technique you could pick him apart so badly...but in his Video...yes video....he said"there are no rules" and he just goes to show it...I like technique...but it has gotten ridiculous and has become a way for drummers to make money selling DVD;s....JR is the Man
Glad to hear something refreshing...tired of listening to all these young drummers basically playing the same things with no concept of rhythm and timing.

I saw JR at a drum clinic in Denver many years ago. What a great touch on the kit, it's as if he makes the drums sing. Such an underrated drummer.
