  • I am using the rhythm and the order of this recitation to learn the sutra. Gratitude!

  • It's first time to listen heartsutra (Banyasimgyeong) in English. Nice video :-)

  • Thank you very much for translating "The Heart Sutra" in English. I can read the original version (chinese) but I cannot translate the content completely into English for my bf who only understand English. Your chanting in this video is also outstanding (very professional) =)

  • @candiesheart21 _/l\_

  • This particular recitation of the Heart Sutra means a great deal to me. I found it by accident. It was the first time I actually heard, with any clarity, the words and meaning of the sutra. I thank you the Abbot very much, and wish him and his sangha many happy days.

  • @jbearden You are welcome! _/l\_

  • @denebXTR I got a fever for more cowbell!

  • what lineage does empty gate follow? my sangha is vietnamese thien/zen, in the tradition of thich nhat hanh

  • @MountAnalogue Kwan Um School of Zen founded by the late Zen Master Seung Sahn

  • @emptygatezen

    is that korean?

  • @MountAnalogue The teacher was Korean and brought some elements of Korean style.

  • I really enjoy this video as it has helped me to memorize the heart sutra. I was thinking about taking refuge in the sangha, but I have a couple of questions.

What is purpose of the throat singing and how is it done? I am humbled to admit that for years I never knew that was people singing - I thought is was some kind of instrument!

  • @puffydcat Throat singing? Do you mean the one that Tibetan monks usually do?

  • @jianguang91 Yes. . it seems impossible to replicate. Like I said, I thought that was an instrument for years. Why do they sing like that?

  • @puffydcat As a Buddhist myself, I have never done or seen that before. As I know so far, no other Buddhism sect does that, only Tibetan Buddhism. I guess that's just a Tibetan culture and they combine it together with the religion which then turns to be a unique way of chanting or something like that.

  • Does anyone know the name of the instrument he's playing?

  • @Rolopofo 木魚

We(Japanese) pronounce it as "Mokugyo",I don't know how Korean pronounce it.(He is in a Korean temple.)

  • @hermitlogger Search for the Korean Heat Sutra

  • @hermitlogger haha, 木魚 - wooden fish? love it!

  • @Rolopofo It is called a moktak

  • I follow Theravada Buddhism, but the Heart Sutra has always been a source of wisdom and inspiration for me.

  • @Bakmoon _/l\_ As said in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, "All the different styles of practices, is like many different fingers pointing o the moon."

  • I do enjoyed a lot but if you can add the lyrics that will help me a lot ...thank you

  • @oguicho77 I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you click on the "show more" under the video, you will see all the lyrics there.

  • Thank You so much for this! I've been looking for a good English translation of the Heart Sutra to further understand it and "soak" it in as I am new to Zen. Thank you for transcribing it in your description as well.

  • @kaijustorm You are welcome!! _/l\_

  • This is a flashback (for me) to the late 80's when I purchased a cassette tape of Master Seung Sahn reciting the Heart Sutra. Everything changes with the exception of a few... This is one of them.

  • @privatepinkbits Click on "show more" right underneath the video

  • 南無阿彌陀佛 讚嘆南無阿彌陀佛 讚嘆

  • @foyin852 _/l\_

  • This is quite beautiful as others have mentioned. I noticed that in the korean version is somewhat more melodic and ends in with what sounds like a improvised flourish. How is it that the English version is less melodic? Ends flatter?

  • @Davidsample7761 Our chants came straight from Zen Master Seung Sahn who brought the forms from Korea. When he was already in the States, the students also wanted to chant it in English. That is what appeared. Most important is not the melody or pitch, but how you keep your mind right now in this very moment.

  • _/I\_

  • Many thanks, many blessings for this excellent rendition.

Are the words used in this version available online?

  • @Engyo1 You can got to the Kwan Um School of Zen website and look under "Teachers and Teaching", then "Practice Resources", then "Chanting Resources" _/l\_

  • @soenzen Your welcome!

  • Wonderful! Nothing left. This was learned in my early studies s a teenager and I have never forgoten it after so many years. Thanks for sharing this jewel of Bodhisattvas!

  • @dhtm3577 Anytime! You are welcome......

  • @emptygatezen Please explain to me the meaning of this and the meaning of the sutra please if you will?? I am new to Zen and its practices. I need eduction and guidance...

  • @0ldschoolfool The core meaning of this is find your true self and use that to help others.

  • @emptygatezen Very Taoist! It's amazing how Taoism influenced Buddhism in China to create Chan/Zen/Seon

  • @0ldschoolfool the heart sutra is about the realization that feeling, form, perceptions, impulses, and conciousness are empty. There is nothing. Everything is empty. When you realize that everything is only as you preceive it and that there is not real self you will be free from suffering. Without out any hindrance no fear exist.

Prajna Paramita Heat Sutra Mantra. Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha.

  • Amitoufo :-)

  • @xxoreoxxandxxoreoxx Kwan Seum Bosal! :-)

  • Many thanks for the immeasurable merits. Amitābha!

  • 好強耶!

  • interesting to hear it in english. as far as it being more beneficial, most koreans and japanese do not understand it anyway in korean or japanese.

  • I guess the language in which it is chanted is not at all important, but it is the understanding of the sutra that is everything.

  • @shtookatz or......attaining the sutra.

  • @shtookatz Exactly so. In order for Buddhism to flower in the West, all of the chanted Sutras must be translated into our languages so that they can be understood by even the most uneducated. The same was done as it traveled from India into the East.

  • @mlh73 I agree that there is some merit in translating the sutra's and this version is quite impressive. However, I must disagree with you on the idea that it was translated as it travelled east "so that it could be understood by the most uneducated"- it was translated into classical chinese- not at all understandable- in korea until recently and in japan to this day the chinese versions are used which are jibberish to all but high priests and scholars

  • @shtookatz I guess I am just learning about Buddhism and am loving every step of the journey. What is Prajna paramita?

  • @willoughbyandalexis means "the Perfection of (Transcendent) Wisdom." But like other words, it is pointing to something. That something is before concepts and ideas. Then when "before" thinking is clear, how does that function? That is the point.

  • Beautiful. I think chanting in one's first language is very beneficial to the practitioner.
