they way that fire is running up the side of the structure is weird. Ive never seen it run up brick that high like that before.. or is that the brick veneer or whats goin on?
Simply put, the city's too cheap to replace the rigs at the appropriate intervals and thus they spend more time in the shop than on the road. For a department like Boston, with heavy run volume almost citywide coupled with poor quality streets and our weather conditions, no apparatus should be in service after ten years. Eight is pushing it for some companies. The old Ladder 26(the one that got Lt. Kelley killed) was from 1995. That truck should have been replaced almost five years ago.
As for Ladder 25 due to its relatively low run volume the city and the fire commissioner(who has never actually been a firefighter) have deemed that a more appropriate course of action is to simply overhaul it even though it's 20 years old. Last year they replaced the cab with one from 1984 and more recently it's been out of service for an engine replacement.
Ya hallberg630 i know your a firefighting god and all, but heres the deal, the masks we wear are not in the best condition cause ya know we actually fight fire and all. Second, come on your gonna give me the smoke in the eyes bullshit , I have a tissue so you can dry those eyes if you need it. I understand ppe is important in the right situations, but if that all you can think about , maybe you guys should go work in a office.

haha thats funny actually i guess i just prefer my health over doin stupid shit on a fire call..just me tho! i would say if masks arent in good condition get new.and i would say that ppe is right in all conditions. maybe i just didnt take backdraft completely to heart when i saw it. we may not do nearly as much as them for calls but when we do it do it just as effectively and with gear, so if they do all the time they cant learn to do effetively with it on?
I respect the brothers on the BFD, Must say as truckman/rescue brother myself our work helps in the fight but I've never seen a axe put a fire out.The outside fire could have been knocked down quickly without hurting the brothers on the inside.I respect your guts men ,but a roof collapse here would have all the roof brothers wishing they had all their gear on and SCBA working. One breath of the hot stuff is all it takes to kill a man.Tremendous tradition but sometimes the traditions kill us.

Kickass Tower Ladder. Also I wish they would show the firefighters on the truck company inside with a helmetcam doing the primary and secondary searches.
And actually show the fire being extinguish, and the salvage and overhaul process.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
im gunna say that it was a light smoke condition on the roof so i can see the no scba, but i would think you would have your helmet and ppe on correctly. But what would I know apparently all vollie's do defensive shit come to think of it i don't think they teach us how to pull lines in side.
Poor vision w mask on = big fall of roof . Its hard enough to see in the first place. And to all you guys who talk about "open coats" while doing truck work, you fall through the roof into the fire floor your a pop tart anyway ,jacket open or not. There is a time and place for SCBA and thats a fact. If you guys are going to put all your weight on safety your in the wrong line of work.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
honestly! your gonna say poor vision with a mask on, oh yeah cause smoke in your eyes makes it much easier to see! and the open jacket comment how about just a blast of flame up thru oh thats right nomex skin! the reason we put weight on safety is so that we dont bury one of our own. I honestly cant believe some of this shit on here, you might as well just go up in jeans and a tee shirt, maybe some flip flops for footwear thats pretty much what ppl are sayin on here
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this is to city fire558 am a vollie up here in canada and ya we dont immediately call defensive and sit on a line in the street in full ppe flooding a structure am the first one off the truck attacking the fire if every thing i got soo dont label us. just cuz u get payed for doing wut u do doesnt mean any thing when it comes down to it we r all firefighters adn we r all here for the reason to fight fire and save lives.....maybe u should think about that
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
true i mean if u dont get paid and u still go into a burning bulding thats just as courageous if not more cuz if u die u dont get money for ur family normaly ur on ur own.
What I enjoy mostly about this burn is the ladder work. Boston is world renowned for it's superior ladder work. I have to disagree with some of the hose work. I really enjoy an interior attack like the next guy, but who was protecting the exposure? The fire creeping up the side of the building covered up 3 possible means of egress. But who am I to judge? Hind sight is always 20/20. When you're out there, remember to watch your six!
@cityfire558 We are not all vollies donning proper PPE is required no matter what you are doing on the fire scene. How about if you went through the roof then the helmet would have been your friend. I have trained many Vollies here in NY ( I'm 23 years on FDNY a LT and live in westchester) and most vollie companies put the career depts to shame so its sounds like your a black ete to the fire service for not showing the Probies how to do it right. Get hurt and see is OSHA wouldnt pick you apart
The people who critisize the Boston fire Dept really need to keep there mouths shut and not try to tell them how to do there job. You could only wish youd be able to smell a helmet off one of these guys heads.Because i guarentee there fightin more fire then you could imagine. Try sayin they dont care about safety. You couldn't hack bein on BFD.
Wow your a dumbass. You are obviously not a firefighter. And if you are, it will be you working at burger king when you end up with cancer and have to leave the job.
Again, everyone's a dumbass but you. We are brothers, and support each other no matter what we do. You are obviously the black sheep of the family. Hang up your coat and go home already!
Your exactly right! I like these guys who are breathing air from the mask jumping off the trucks and stretching to the front door. Half the goddamn air is gone before you go through the front door. Give me a break! You can get fresh air off the floor boards if you have to. I want air when I need it. These other comments must be volunteer boys!
if your cutting a roof open with your tank on you will piss through your air there for you dont do it....and boston is a good fire department there very professional they just do it old school you never see them back down or stand on the front lawn they grab the line and charge in they save houses not foundations
I'm sorry... but I have to say that their lack of using industry "standard" PPE is unacceptable and gives the new impressionable firefighters watching this video the wrong idea of how a professional conducts himself. How would you feel seeing a cop with a pearl handled revolver or his shirt hanging out.
That's not fresh air their breathing in those rooms or on the roof. Most of them will die from cancer or other illness sooner than they would have if they had worn their equipment. though
How would I feel seeing a cop with a pearl handled revolver, gee that's a hard one. As long as the guy gets his job done I don't care if he's walking around with a 17th century cutlass. On the other hand, if he has his shirt untucked, off with his head.
Your a dumb ass. You have obviously never cut a roof before. And yea they did do their job, but it seems like they really have no regard for safety. It's pretty pathetic watching these guys walk around on the roof with no helmets, no gloves, no scba, and open coats. It's really hard to call these guys professional when it seems like they have no regard for safety what so ever.
Apparently your not a true brother, or you wouldn't be talkin' shit on how others do their job. You sound like a book boy, suck up to NFPA. What does NFPA know anyway?? There's the book way and the right way! Departments find what works best for them. As long as you get your job done, who cares! Who wears SCBA on the outside anyways? Vollies? Notice the guy in the window, he was wearing SCBA. CONSERVE YOUR AIR, you might need it someday!
Great Job BFD. Just got one question. Why wasn't the guys performing vertical ventilation wearing full PPE? I saw some open coats, no tanks, and no helmets. Our SOP's call for it. I'm not trying to bash you guys. You do a fantastic job. I'm just curious. I just want to see everyone come home to their wife and kids. "Stay safe" and "Everyone Goes Home"
really?? One room basement fire? Are you sure? because working in this area I would almost bet that this was a ballon frame building with fire on all three floors. How do I know this....because I was there! Keep your mouth shut, it is obvious you have no idea!
