Just watch MAD MEN to see how advertising companies persuaded people to buy products that were bad for them. Now the U.S has to promote healthy food, the packaged crap people eat is appalling. Its so easy to forget now since theres a huge movement to clean up any and all films coming from Hollywood but it's important to remember that for many years smoking was an important cultural and social activity in the lives of many woman and played a huge part in shaping an early feminine identity at the turn of the century.

It's amazing how smoking back then was classified as glamorous, now so many people in Hollywood act like it's so un-glamorous :( However, there are so many out there with the smoking fetish - I am a web model and always get requests to do smoking pictures and videos. It's amazing, some things have changed but some haven't. Now it's taboo or something.

Well its b/c smoking has been proven to be very harmful to one's body. In this day and age, people want to set a good example for the youth (w/e the fuck that's supposed to mean) and knowing how harmful smoking can be, it's not proper for celebs to show that they're addicted to nicotine. It's not particularly taboo, but it's more about morals. Once you show a kid how "cool" smoking is, the more hooked onto that idea, they'll be "cool". That whole issue leads to idea of addiction which is taboo.

@Sierralynn71 I completely agree with you. Back then cigarettes were a social norm, and little was known about the dangers of it. I recently read a biography of Audrey Hepburn, and one of her secrets to staying youthful was to limit yourself to only 6 cigarettes per day! :) For such beautiful women it was sexy and empowering to smoke -like breathing with an attitude!
