I am so new to ceramics, tell me what is ball clay ? does it come in a power form .or a block of moist clay or what? . Love your work. Thanks gigipinky1
There is no glaze at all. sig is a very fine slip. the consistency of milk. the sig is applied with a brush to the bone dry pot. check out my other videos, there is one on how I apply terra sig. thanks so much for your comments.
I use a liquid wax. The brand name is 'Trewax' I think it is mainly used for flooring. It goes on very easy, and i have not had a problem with yellowing at all.
What a wonderful slideshow! And oh, the pots, they're georgious! Terrasigillata in combination with the wax has made them shine in a spectacular way. Nice work! Best wishes from Finland, Hanna
Hmm... Scandinavian roots. Interesting! I've been watching your pots and thinking to myself that there's perhaps a certain amount of Scandinavian simpliness and purity in the forms that really appeal to me... :)
Hi Rick, and thankyou for your kind words. Yes, I used T-sig on these. and after cleaning off any ash, I apply 'Trewax'. It is a liquid wax used for ceramic flooring. I used to use butchers wax, but the Trewax really finishes them nicely.
Sue, Your work has inspired me to get back into the horse hair pots. I have used a non yellowing paste wax on my pots but might try the Trewax. I also like the idea of coloring of the sig with amaco velvets. I thing a pale blue would look interesting on the pots but the white contrast is stunning. keep us posted on your great work! yes, if I can get to it. like on a rim that flares out. If i make lidded boxes I T-sig on the inside of the box and the inside of the lid. sometimes i will just drop a piece of newspaper inside the pot,and let it burn to get a smoky look inside.
I TOSS a little sugar or orance peel inside, it like that because it often leaves neat designs. I you do it, TOSS it in, don't hold your hand over the opening and sprimkle it in, you will probably get burned.
You apply the sig when the pot is bone dry, correct?

@gigipinky1 ball clay also called china clay or kaolin, a very plastic clay. I get it in powder form from my ceramic supply store.
thanks for taking a look,
Sue.

Nice forms, nice tooling at the base. The vessels look great in a natural environment. Any suggestions for the best non yellowing paste?

Thanks for the positive feedback. Its wonderful to be able to create these pots. Most of them are memorials to dear pets that have left this earth.

yes, the pot should be bone dry.
yes, never hold your hand over the pot or look into it!! drop and stand back. flames do pop up and flicker out of the pot....... good reminder!
