Well Kruger himself was no navigator (he was born some three or four hundred years after the Dutch first landed). I think it's just a matter of people believing what they want to believe instead of what's apparent. Another example of this besides the flat Earth theory is the popularity of conspiracy theories such as the Moon landing was a faked or people who believe that the Earth is hollow. There are also people who believe the Earth is growing!

There is a misconception here about the Boers as they are not transplanted Europeans who "do not want to go back home" because the Boers are not Europeans & have NEVER viewed Europe as their home. This is as bad as claiming that the Mohawks should "go back home to Asia" just because their ancestors originally came from Asia. SA was never a Dutch colony, rather after the Revolution of 1648, the Calvinist Dutch left to form their own societies independent of the more liberal and decadent Dutc society. Holland never had an interest in SA like it did in its offical co,lonies like Suriname. st. Maaten, Indonesia and the Antillies.
Places like SA and Flemish Belgium illustrate a cultural difference from Holland which is very dramatic.

In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established a refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch transported slaves from Indonesia, Madagascar, and India as labour for the colonists in Cape Town. As they expanded east.
eventually the britts took over.. but returned it in 1806, but soon afterwards the Dutch East India Company declared bankruptcy and brittain annexed the cape colony.

Just to point out to Salamderjood: the surname Naude is an Afrikaans surname of French Huguenot origin & one of the old ceremonial State Presidents of the Republic of South Africa during the late 1960s into the 1970s was a one Jozua Froncois Naudé. The progenitor of the Naudé surname came in 1718 during the Trekboer era long before the emergence of the Voortrekkers he noted.

We faced redistribution of wealth, affirmative action, hearings and now also other forms of ongoing persecution. The majority of the Voortrekkers came from the eastern Cape where the Boer communities were formed of which most of the German arrivals had settled prior ergo: the Boers are much more of German origin than the Cape Dutch & Theuns Cloete of Boervolk Radio asserts that the Boers are "mainly" or mostly of German origin. The Dutch power which ran the VOC hid [ or tried to ] the true ethnic origin of the Boers in order to better control them from a Dutch vantage point.

Vortrekker leader Piet Retief [ from Retif ] / Sarel Cilliers [ from Celliers ] were surnames of French Huguenot origin & Hendrik Potgieter had a surname of German origin as the Germans / Frisians / French / Danish & SOME Dutch had by then amalgamated into the Boers [ of the Cape frontier ] & the Cape Dutch [ who had most of the Dutch ancestors ] of the Western Cape: ie the Cape Afrikaners.
