The instrumentation is beyond corny. This setting would work better by getting rid of the "swing" (belongs in a lounge, not a church), and by giving it more decent instrumentation. The basic melodies are decent though.
For those who are peeved by the negative comments, we already understand that we are doing this for God and not for ourselves. We're tired of lame music which is in discord with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Imagine this music being played on Calvary: get it?
@TelemachusSneezed1 The entire Pascal mystery is celebrated at every Mass...the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord. Every Sunday is a "little Easter". There should be a source of joy at Mass. But I agree, we have forgetten about the sacrifical aspect of the Mass as well.
@catholicpriest1: Respectfully noted, Father. My concern is that many Novus Ordo Masses (which is a beautiful liturgy in its own right, done properly) look to all the world like protestant praise & worship services. I have no personal animus towards Mr. Haugen, but the majority of his output that I've encountered does not gel with the Mass. I'm not against "joy," I'm against saccharine.
As I said, the basic melodies are not bad. There's even some clear eastern influences which are intriguing.
@catholicpriest1: What would you have gone with if you had had your druthers? Have you looked at any of the Mass settings from Corpus Christi Watershed? The Musica Sacra website might have resources too.
@TelemachusSneezed1 Have you used this setting in the Eucharistic liturgy with organ and full instrumentation? We did... brass, winds, timpani and organ at Christmas... and it was quite glorious and the congregation sang better than ever. Don't knock it until you've tried it... and we're a rather conservative parish, also.
This is a lovely traditional arrangemnet. However, if you are looking for something for a youth choir or praise band, check out "New Catholic Mass Music" or "New Catholic Mass Music Gloria"
OK, I was a fan of the original "Mass of Creation", but was a bit thrown off after the text changed and Haugen released the updated Mass of Creation. I really like this Storrington Mass a lot! It uses the new text as mandated by the church, is easy to learn and I really like the sound/feel of it. I think this is a great replacement for the original Mass of Creation!
I sense a bit of dissent with some rather opinionated comments. Let's not forget that we are all doing God's work and reaching different factions of our parishes. As a classically trained musician with degrees in music, I direct the contemporary group at our church, complete with a full rhythm section. Every genre has its place. Our contemporary ministry reaches our teens and many others and draws them into the Mass - even after confirmation when many teens depart for a time.
This is a wonderful setting that can be used successfully by differnent kinds of parish music groups. This recording represents only one rendition. We are singing this at Church of St. Timothy with guitar ensemble, adult choir, cantors, and soon, the Children's Choir. Many favorable comments...when sung with joy!
I'm not a Marty fan, for the sake of being a Marty fan. I have no emotional attachment to his music because it comes from him. However, I do like this setting. This could be used in most musical idioms, sounds to me like the Gloria could be done in a through-composed style without much damage too. As for instrumentation, we all need to get out of our trenches and come to the middle. The Mass is today's worship of a God who is ever-ancient/ever-new. Otherwise we lose people on both fronts.
Okay I know some of you are Marty fans and some are not. This is definitely usable. It is easy to sing. Again, throw the piano out and get an organ. What do you think?
@MassSettings Although the accompaniment music is hard, I personally like it. Why should we care whether we like the Mass music or not if we're at Mass to praise God? I find that kind of selfish.
@MassSettings I'm more of an organ person however for some psalms, Mass settings like the Mass of Light, and communion songs, I think it's best if the piano is used. However, incorporating midi orchestral sounds in during the communion songs instead of the piano is really nice also.
But where's the "glorious" in this Gloria?

Thank you so much! I'm learning the flute accompaniment parts for the Mass for my Parish, and this helped a lot!

@TelemachusSneezed1 I am not that excited by the Storrington Mass but our choir picked it. I would prefer something a bit more traditional.

Eminently singable... and I'm glad that our diocese decided to use it as our second standard setting, after the Chant Mass.

We are going to do this at my church. I sing in adult choir and play violin in youth choir.

@Hysteriskull Throw out the rhythm section. This is Mass not a rock concert.

This is actually one of the better ones. I've bought it for my parish and look forward to introducing it.

@MassSettings I recently altered the accompaniment to better suit the organ, and it worked very well.
