Thanks for the lyrics - I have played this to my (half scottish) kids for the last 10 years as they grow up alongside a lot of scottish folk music. Funny to read the lyrics after all this time!

I earlier wrongly translated the dialectical verb 'kruusata' as 'to hug'.

BTW the Finnish word is based on Swedish 'krusa' which they use in the song but it is strangely translated as 'I'm not _being_'?

The first lin ein Portineo's lyrics doesn't make sense though - I take it it is translated from the Fininish idiom literally - it should be "I am not asking or" "I am not after you" or something like that - I take it the meaning is "My interest in you is not because......"

Otherwise the lyrics scan well in your translation

The first line in Swedish, as I hear it, goes:

"Inte krusar jag för du är nätt och grann/"

"I won't beatify myself cause you are pretty and fair/"

So it is more or less the same as the first line of the Finnish part.

These both depend on the actual meaning of the Swedish verb 'krusa' (loaned to Finnish as dalectical 'kruusata') - which I'm not totally sure of. 'To beautify' is the only translation I have found.

BTW I misspelled, it should be 'dish cloth' - not 'disk cloth' ;)

It is a bit difficult to say who has loaned words from whom as the area this song is coming has not been any country what so ever until 1250. Before that, in the viking period, that we spoke different languages that are very odd. I guess our langauge was very much like Icelandic and Finnish.

@Svansakuten Indeed. The sagas that mention Starkad imply that in post-Romano europe, you could be understood from Poland to Britain with one language. Trace any similar word in Finnish and Swedish and it will either be from the Finno-Ugric branch (similar in Lithuania etc) or the Germano-Scandinavian branch (Norse, Anglo-Saxon etc). We all share a grammar structure though :-)

@Hopfolk Lithuanian is an Indo-European language (probably the most conservative I-E language in Europe) - grammatically I-E languages have very little to do with Finnish or other Fenno-Ugric languages.

@Steerpike07 Well, then she was wrong. The ladies sing in (oldish) Finnish and the guy in (what for me sounds quite modern) Swedish.

The 'Lapp-languages' are usually called Sami or Sapmi language (there are more than one). They are related to Finnish but quite different - I, a Finn, understand next to nothing about Sami. I guess you could compare to English and German, both Germanic languages but not mutually intelligible.

@Gatdecor I did. Frankly I just don't understand what's the point with it (or I guess with any other 'remix' I have ever heard). The natural emotional progression and development gets butchered with the reorganization and sterilized by the clinical layers of machine sounds. IMO of course.

@EneriGiilaan I think the emotional progression and development is as clear as crystal in the Sasha remix. Each to their own I guess. As for not getting remixes that's probably where the problem lies. Remixes are a chance to re-imagine an idea and re-interpret it to create a new feel and expression of the original track. I have many tracks where I like both original and remixed versions and even some where the remix improves on the original IMO.

@davedagreat69 First thanks for a reasoned feedback. In general I don't think that the 'original' is always better than later versions/covers - and thus in principle remixing could work.

But in practice all 3rd party remixes I have come upon are too heavy handed - they use the original as 'instrumental' material for something totally new, something that can't be called 'a version' any more - and as a rule this new song lacks the elements that drew me to the original in the first place.

@EneriGiilaan I guess we have very different opinions on what makes a good remix then. I can't stand it when the remix is just the original with a beat, or with parts added. Very un-imaginative. This is why I often refer to remixes I like as Re-imaginings as a more accurate title. I think the counter melodies added to the "milde salve" mix are genuinely beautiful as are some of the lead parts which soar over the track later on. We clearly have very different tastes. Mine are VERY diverse ;)

@davedagreat69 As said I don't usually find any kind of remix interesting. The worst are the ones where the original track is chopped to pieces and reorganized with added electric effects and sounds. And I agree that just adding beat is boring in general.

I also try to keep my taste as diverse as possible, but I'm limited by my talent(s) - there are factors I am not able to recognize. I guess it is the case with 'milde salve' - I didn't notice the counter melodies on the first listening ...

@EneriGiilaan ... But regarding the whole song under discussion. I just wonder why they (Röyksopp) want to keep using the original track for their versions of the song. Why not play everything anew - that way they would be able to have even more freedom for their reinterpretation(s).

@EneriGiilaan Maybe they didn't play it new because they're not guitarists? BTW the counter-melodies I mentioned appear at 0:50 of the "Milde Salve" mix. These are not present in the original Steve Reich piece but may well be made up of samples which have been taken from the original track or may be new parts played by Royksopp themselves. I'm not sure which. (They may even be samples from parts 1+2 of electric counterpoint but I don't recognise them).

@EneriGiilaan Out of interest, see what you think of Royksopp's re-imagining of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint Fast 3. You'll find it here on Youtube. I personally love Reich's original but I find myself having an equal love for Royksopp's version. I can't see what's wrong with someone hearing someone else's song and finding it inspiring to the point where you want to make your own version of it. Very flattering to the original artist and fans of the original have another version to taste.

@davedagreat69 Regarding "Counterpoint Fast 3" - to me it seems that Royksopp just adds drums and bass to the original but doesn't cut and paste and reorder the parts - so it is more like a new arrangement for a bigger number of instruments. But I must admit that technically it is a 'remix' which at the same time retains much of the feel and development of the original - a version instead of a new song.

Personally I still enjoy the original more.
