I've often found it interesting that such an inordinate number of great films were produced in the midst of America's most trying economic times. Unfortunately, I don't think I've seen a single great film released since the recession began; in fact, most have been more than usually formulaic and lacking in artistic merit. Of course, part of that is the lamentable decline in the kind of films that people WANT to see; it is a sad truth that a film like this wouldn't fare well if released today.
That you for posting this in its entirety. 1934 was extremely bleak year in the Depression when this film was released. This dance sequence shows that people under extraordinary circumstances are capable of producing extraordinary results! In time, if this clip were only remaining remnant by which history were able to categorize the era, one would think the year 1934 was one of the most gracefully sumptuous, romantic and elegant times in which to live. And perhaps it was!
they had to film this scene from start to finish with no cuts because they did not have the same technology that we do now. i love old movies like this!

these big set piece dance routines are wonderful to watch but must have been a nightmare to plan and film.

Seems we could use more of this kind of entertainment from Hollywood while we ride out this recession. But, I'm not holding my breath.
