  • How much were these things when they were launched ?

  • the precursor to the Roland TR-808

  • used by Frankie Beverly and Maze on the song "Joy and Pain"

  • very cool video ~ YOU ARE LUCKY TO HAVE These to play with~ wish i had them~ >:)~

  • you even have a vintage phone nice!

  • The Grandfather of Drum machines. Mint

  • Dieses Roland was used by... Ultravox...Vienna...lol

  • Ultravox, Hiroshima Mon Amour

  • And I can feel it, coming in the air tonight.

  • The CR-78 was used on Heart of Glass which was recorded in June, 1978.

  • CR-78 was also used by Gary Numan on: "Remind Me To Smile" and "She's Got Claws" and some more songs from Telekon and Dance

    Love that CR-78 sound.

  • @20secs sound like "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins and @2:30 sound like "Joy and Pain" by Maze.

    Awesome machine!

  • The CR-78 was all over Anthony Phillips' album "1984". A very under rated synth concept masterpiece, by the way. Never could understand why it went un-noticed compared to other works by JM Jarre, Kitaro or Michael Oldfield.

  • I can feel it coming in the air tonight .... Oh lord, and I've been waiting for this moment all my life Oh lord, Oh lord.

  • Magic sounds!

    i remember Phil Collins...Genesis etc

  • I definitely hear Blondie "heart of glass" and everything by John Foxx. And some Ultravox. This is awesome!

  • Quantisiert die Cr-78 eiegntlich wenn man sie selber programmiert ??

  • @TR0jAX ja, irgendwie schon...

  • amazing how after all this time some of the pre-programmed rhythms are still quite catchy!

  • Phil Collins Face value drum machine sound. Cool stuff.

  • I so wish this was a VST..

  • does anyone know for definate which beatbox was used in Ian Dury & Blockheads 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick ' ... It was recorded at The WorkHouse studio Old Kent Road but in interview I read with producer/engineer Laurie Latham he doesnt specify... it was probably CR-78 but would like to know for sure....

  • How do you sync the cr78 to the sci Tom ? I have a drumtraks can i sync it with the cr78 ?

  • @TR0jAX  SCI TOM trigger out -> CR-78 ext trigger in. I never had a drumtraks, I don't know...

  • At 1:47 it sounds just like the intro to the album version of the flight of the concords song "inner city pressure". But i dont think they could afford something as old and rare as this.

  • Oh yes, I can definately hear the hi - hats in "Fade To Grey" here. I've got to get myself one of these...

  • Sexual healing baby!

  • @Nellynoodlebums no. TR808

  • @layzeee Thanks :)

  • Many bands of new wave, no wave and cold wave used that drumcomputer, for minimalist music and many other stuff !!!

I love this machine, i got a AIR BASE 99 and it's emulating the TR 808/909 and CR 78 but this is not exactly the same thing like real one !

    But it's better than nothing!

    Nice demo btw !!

    Fav 5/5

  • Nice one! Gary Numan used one extensively on his 1980 album,"Telekon", as did John Foxx's Ultravox (eg "Hiroshima mon amour".........)

  • that thing is awesome!!

  • This of course is the drum machine behind in the air tonight. I was however used before on "Duchess" on the Duke album by Genesis. Phil actually used it on the tour as seen in this clip

  • This drum machine was used on Blondie's, 'Heart Of Glass'...1979

  • tolle Kiste! Ich mag den CR-78 Sound sehr.

  • 'Is there a grandma in my town who has this sitting doing nothing?' Forget about the Wurlitzer end table gyro speaker I got for $5. But u can make:

2- 18'' piece sturdy steel panels. 4- 6'' spanner nuts,8 bolts. Clip perfect triangles from each corner of panels & bolt at corners w/ spanners. Drill center & mount 2" prec.brng ea. side ( isolate w/ plastic) & 1''hollow steel axle w/ 3/4'' hole ctr. Get 3/4''X16''threaded rnd stk & 8 blts&wshrs. At 1 end put cardboard tube w/2x5'' spkrs. Bal othr.

  • sweeeet!

  • I can hear "in the air tonight" there!

  • Glad there are still some good artists that put awesome instruments like this to good use .

  • Ah yes, the predecessor to the TR 808. :) Very similar sounds and very cool. Phil Collins went straight from usin this to the 808. He had good sense. :) hehe

  • I love this machine, thank you about the information. Make some good noisies bro.

  • I had one,its not entirely programmable.But for synth-pop is good enough.

  • The swedish synthpop-group "Page" uses it on their new album! One of my favourite drum machines!

  • yea, the sync with tom part is the best !

  • Used for the best band in rock history in Duchess from the "Duke" album in 1980.

  • woah.. great stuff!

    I want my own ;)

  • The CR-78 was also used on the "Duke" album from Genesis.

  • cool!

  • great stuff..

  • To me the CR-78 is the best sounding analog drum machine out there even today. I was hoping Dave Smith & Roger Linn was come out with something simular but I guess that will never happen now. Thanks for the demo.

  • @mattsynth

Roger hated the cr-78, so forget it

  • Heart of glass

  • der Sound klingt immer noch klasse. Schönes Teil.

  • Excellent demo!

  • cool demo very nice

  • I can hear through these walls!

  • @RudyZombe sorry, I wanted to say: "in the air tonight"

  • Can you edit the drum sounds?

  • @v1o no.

  • @AnalogAudio1 not without a soldering iron ;)

  • Das ist meiner Meinung nach die beste Drum Machine überhaupt. Die Sounds sind so gut!!! :)
