I loved this bizarre-abstract cartoon as a kid. It was featured on the Oopsy the Clown show on Sunday mornings in the seventies. However, UPA didn't produce it, it was produced by the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission, who were obviously imitating UPA's strange style. Great to see it again!
I don't know what made me think about Jot today but I came here immediately to see if I didn't just dream this cartoon up because no one I know seems to remember it. Good to see I'm not crazy.
Jot was my first and only best friend. He also became my invisible friend when away from the tv. OMG, Jot, I miss you so much! I love you, Jot! It's me! In 2010. Remember me, Jot??? From when I was a child of the '60's?
That's what's wrong with kids these days... No Best Friend Jot!
Jot didn't have 'grey areas' or 'maybe ifs'. Wrong was wrong and if you made it right you and everybody else was much better off. Problems aren't always so simple, but the simple truth is stilll there.
My husband and I were talking about early cartoons -- pulled JOT out of the memory banks but he had never seen it -- thank be to Youtube! Forgot the Fort worth, TX address with NO ZIP CODE! Jot is far more to the right than I recognized as a little kid -- but great messages. I'll bet our 5 year old daughter will enjoy.
Wow... I remember watching this on Sundays at my grandmother's house when I was really young. To be honest, this episode kind of freaked me out a little when the background looked like spilled paint and he started melting.
This particular Jot episode reminds me of Frankenstein. Both discuss how not dealing your negative actions brings you misery. In both cases, they are ostricized and chased by something they created. If you haven't read Frankenstein, it's a beautifully written book. And hats off to Jot's creator for expressing this moral dynamic so well in a mere four minutes. That's art.
I love Jot, Too bad cartoons today are full of violence and occultic undertones. Children really need to learn the lessons taught by Jot. Afterall is it not BEST to tell the truth?
It's too bad we all can't be haunted by our disobedience. I watched Jot on believe it or not, the Jim and Tammy Show (Baker) at WYAH TV (started by Pat Robertson) in Portsmouth Virginia. A few years later, I was their paper boy.
Captain Kangaroo?? Give me a break!! This was produced by the Southern Baptist Radio & Television Commision out of Ft. Worth Tx. Also known as SoBabRadCom. in the business world in Ft. Worth. A company I worked for supplied them with office supplies.
I think they were located on the feeder road of I-30. I welcome disagreements. Remember Reddy Killowatt????
I remember seeing JOT on J.P. Patches when I was in kindergarten... there was one episode where Jot had a bad dream and that gave me nightmares until i was a pre-teen!!
Jot! I remember this very well from when I was a kid back in the 1970's. I saw it on tv, in the afternoons as best I recall maybe after school. I know I saw Jot many times & do vaguely remember this episode, but don't remember much about the "moral" messages in the storylines, but did enjoy watching it. Thanks for the memories. It takes me back to my childhood. I think it would be nice to see all of the Jot cartoons on dvd. I'm sure lots of us remember and would enjoy seeing Jot again.
I hear a lot of people say that about children's programs from the 60s and early 70s, but it was just normal at the time, wasn't considered druggy. "Jot" actually has a pre-psychedelic aesthetic to it, more of a mid-century-modern minimalist style. To see some real psychedelic-looking children's shows from the late 60s/early 70s, check out Pufnstuf, The Banana Splits, Liddsville, the original Scooby Doo, etc. They make later shows seem dull-looking by comparison.
I remember watchin this when I was about four or five.. very cool,, but my friends dont even remember this... I dont understand why they banned religion from cartoons... THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES....LUV YA
Yes, Jot. I watched it early Saturday mornings. Another example of convoluted religious lessons used when real logic, reason, and common sense would have worked.
Poor kids. These programs could have been really cool.
Yeah, this cartoon was on The Children's Hour in Dallas on Sunday Mornings along with Davey and Goliath. Anyone remember Bill Kelley or Cleve Lancaster?
I hadn't seen any of these in many many years! Thanks for sharing! All it's missing is the thing where you could send off for stuff and Jot was like " I know you'll like them!" and giggles.
I also remember the address for Jot. I have asked several people over the years if they remembered Jot and they laughed at me and thought I was crazy when I told them the address for a cartoon I loved as a child.
I have lived in Tn. all my life and I can remember getting up on cartoon Saturday at 6:00 to watch Jot and then 6:30 to watch Casper. Wonderful memories for a 37 year old.
I remember this series from when I was just a little kid. They played them on Sunday morning. It was like an acid trip for Sunday schoolers. Gotta love how his fib becomes tangible and prevents him from playing with a puppy, then pursues him and melts his brain.
Just as a note, Only a handful of Christians made this cartoon, not all of them. If Jot and other cartoons that mention Jesus, or Christians or Lord other similar religious words bother you, then please do not watch them. Please be kind to people who chose a religion. please be kind to people who chose not to have a religion as well. Thank You.
I watched Jot when I was a boy in Alabama, and I don't mind the G-d talk. But the folks who controlled TV didn't put much else on. We missed a lot of good TV and music because some Christian didn't like it. I don't remember them asking anyone else for their opinion.
I loved Jot. It's about as religious as Veggie Tales - using basic Christian tenets to teach kids to make the right moral decisions. There was very little actual 'preaching' in the cartoons at all, except to use the odd bible quote.
And UPA didn't do the animation. Jot didn't start till 1965, UPA's peak period was in the mid-50's.
Your vocabulary word for today, kids: ABOMINATION! That's what lying is, and a lot of other things that I guess aren't all that bad after all if they're on a par with "haughty eyes", a "lying tongue", and "feet that are swift in running to mischief". So quit playing "smear the queer" at recess!
I love Jot and totally remember this... but I feel this was a terrific cartoon with a great message UNTIL they put that awful Biblical meme into it. The moment "mom" evaded saying she herself had lied, I knew this cartoon was in trouble. Why can't Christians figure out the rest of humanity can be moral without being religious? Lying is wrong; you're born knowing that; you don't need Jesus to scare you.
Got to say though: UPA kicked much booty in the cel department, didn't they?
this video is very religions and what it told about what God hates lying lips...but it told u to never to tell a lie to the Lord...and i even liked the video:)
Oh my God, I remember this. I also remember Jot saying how to join his fan club. He's say, "Jot, Box 341, Ft. Worth Texas 76116. Psst. . I hope you like them." I actually did it and got some Jot crap in the mail.
