Thanks for your videos of how bad the economy is here in Oregon and Portland. They economy is NOT getting better. The REAL jobless rate here is at least 50%. No one is doing anything about the bad economy. Until people begin to care at the employers as well as the temp services and quit lying to people about available jobs and quit putting jobs that do not exist on Craiglist things will never get better here in Portland. I hate what they have done to people in this city-it is not my falt at all.

Commercial real estate and mall stores may be able to hang on a bit longer, but if things don't pick up, many will go under. Even if things don't grind to a halt, but merely grind to a slow down, that might be enough to tip the balance and lead to bankruptcy.

I'd really like to get to the bottomm of these employment discrepancies. Another discrepancy is the total monetary base versus the M1 and M2 figures. Seems the gubment figures aren't counting the massive printing of dollars for some reason, yet we know from articles and fed statements that they are buying and planning to buy treasuries. I read an article saying we are tripling thre money supply since last October, yet the figures somehow mask that fact. Hmmmmm

I heard the reason for the lower unemployment claims was because people who used up their 49 weeks of unemployment went back to work. I'm asked to believe that people on unemployment are simply on vacation & are going back to work now. If that is the case, over the next 8 months the economy needs to accomodate millions of people coming back from their 49 week vacations. The numbers coming off benefits will increase & reality might set in around Nov 09, that 2010 will be much worse than all 09.

I live in central Indiana, and the business owners complain about slow business conditions; however, I notice heavy traffic volume on the roads, not a huge number of beggars, and retail parking lots are full. I record malls that have high vacancy rates and post them on my channel, in my opinion, the commercial real estate bubble has not burst yet

In Indianapolis, you have the choice between Best Buy or Frys Electronics for software and electronics, there is little competition, now the good deals are drying up. Circuit city locations are standing vacant, at least the ones I have driven by lately.

I live 30 miles east of Indianapolis. You are likely seeing the commuting traffic of workers going to their Indy Mcjobs, as the manufacturing base in Indiana is destroyed. Visteon and Metaldyne bankrupt this week. Indy GM plant will be shuttered. Oh, and the state legislature wants to tax the rest of us to operate Lucas Oil Stadium. Don't forget the economic devastation in Elkhart and LaGrange Counties...harsh reality is heading for the counties around Indianapolis.

I agree, my observation was that while the economy in central Indiana is slow, I am not seeing a collapse. There is some empty commercial real estate, and some empty houses here and there; however, I think we could agree things have not ground to a halt.

I do have the feeling that the economy is a house of credit cards, and while people are being more careful, it wouldnt take much for things to collapse.

I agree that the economy hasn't ground to a halt in Indiana, but that will likely change dramatically in 6-9 months. And I agree with you that it won't take much more bad news to send this state over the cliff. Increase in robbery does not bode well for the future...and the robbers are brazen-don't seem to care if they are on video. Lots of vacant commercial real estate in Anderson, Muncie, and New Castle validates your comment about the house of cards. Good luck to you and yours!

Anderson is in a sad state, when I make calls in that area, the business people, it seems, have lost hope. No Chrysler or Ford franchise has replaced Payton-Wells, and those are fairly new facilities. Same with Newcastle, the GM and Ford franchises are closed, and have not been re-opened. Those are two sizeable markets that cant seem to support major car lines. You can count on the local property taxes to rise, the state is a growth industry. Ha!

There was an article in my newspaper last week which said that extended unemployment benefits in Virginia weren't being paid out because the computer system couldn't process them. I wonder what effect this has on unemployment numbers and if the same thing is happening in other parts of the country. I am an Hoosier, and I am familiar with Elkhart County. There is also a city of Elkhart in that county, although Goshen is the capital of Elkhart County, and is a smaller city than Elkhart.

The last I heard, unemployment was over 18% in that county, and growing. I did not knowe that there was some sort of news series being done about that county. I do not own a television.
