  • this video has been very informative, i look forward to riding in a horse and buggy when i visit nyc,

  • Good video! I find the difference in the names of harness and carriage parts depending where someone learns to drive interesting. Your wiffle tree(did I spell that even close to right) is our swingletree.

  • @LopesWithHisLungs did you ever try to hold a spooked horse by the halter, the more you post the more obvious how little you know, ha keep it up, know nothing wanna be.

  • @LopesWithHisLungs At work taking a bridle off would cause a dangerous situation, the horses are unbridled only at the stable. "the back harness" as you call it is called the "breeching" here in the US.

Thats how i describe it in the vid btw.

  • i find horses to be a great way to get around, many people take good or great care of there horses, as in this video, it is only the people who do not care for there horses and miss treat them that causes problems for everyone with horses. Great Job by the way with this video and others

  • @crazyeightbar thanx

  • These horses have a good life, horses adapt to their surroundings. The animal activists have need to just butt out of smething they dont know. Horses lift their back legs to rest it and take "their" weight off it. Even little foals do it while sleeping. Why dont these activists just go after Mennonites and Amish people too, their horss dont get food and water and a lot dont get blankets in the weather. Their horses go ALL DAY and lets not even talk about these horses barns. Cute horses BTW!

  • What about the noise?

    And car accidents?

Still you use animals for making money, taking them out of their natural environment and dropping them in NYC. We have enough cars, trains and busses. We don't need the horses.

  • @Strychnine007 Every animal domesticated was taken from their natural environment. Every domesticated animal is exploited in someone way. Even the pet cat dog and gold fish.. we have them for OUR enjoyment, and pay them by giving them food, shelter, and care. Even shelters use animals to make money, lol.

So what point are you making? Carriage rides are not about transportation. I dare you to take a ride through Central Park in a cab and enjoy it as much as you would at a slower horses pace.

  • @Strychnine007 And where is their "Natural Inviroment" You think Barns are Abusive too? Fuck off The carriages will allways be there.

  • Very good video, this shows that PETA is a bunch of ppl that dose not their facts right. They say a picture is 1000 words, keep showing it so ppl can judge for them self!

  • This was really interesting - your explanations are very good and easy to understand. I found the part about the 'padded shoe' especially interesting - perfect for an animal that is walking on a lot of hard ground.

Also - your horse is really beautiful!

My horse paws at the ground whenever she wants to eat too.

  • Good for you. your horse looks so abused. NOT! Many people who think carraige horses have such a hard life they don't. Yes when I drove carraiges in a city not NYC. I would get the you abuse your horse. But if you ask them anything about horses they know nothing. I always offered water to my horse and let him relax. had a towel to wipe him down and such. Not saying I never heard of abuses by carraige companies but those people were bad and that was the plain fact. but thanks for the video :)

  • Very informative piece. I also drive work horses on occasion, but I would love to drive in a big city like that. :) Very well behaved horses too, I love how he'll stand and paw but not otherwise move, though the reins are quite loose.

Let me know if there are any job openings ;) lol

  • My only concern(if you could call it that..) would be to maybe braid his tail and tie it into a bun so it doesn't hang in his poop-bag and become stained and impossible to brush later.

  • Nice horse, beautiful carriage and equipment. Great concise explanations!

  • It's obvious you know horses. Your expertise is evident and is appreciated. I'm inclined to listen to EXPERTS on a subject I know little about, as opposed to listening to agitators with an agenda. Thank you for these videos!

  • I don't see these horses being exploited. They are taken care of nicely. I watched your other video - you're doing an awesome job. ^.^

    @MonkeyRenchGang - get a life!

  • Asking for lunch? What a joke. Those horses are neurotic from repetition without stimulus in the time they are forced to stand in one place for hours at a time. You can see them repeatedly engaging in stereotypical and neurotic behavior such as pawing, swaying, clamping down on the bit and jerking their head down. This video shows ONE horse. What about the thousands of others? What about those that are killed every year in accidents? Those overworked until they die of EXHAUSTION!? THAT'S TRUTH.

  • @ravenshadowflight Accidents happen in every equine sport, discipline and even sometimes when horses are just out being horses. You can't call something evil because of accidents. I knew a horse who was grazing in the field with horses he had been with for years when one of them kicked him and broke his leg.

Also, there is nothing wrong with a horse fidgeting. It is in their nature, and it does not mean they are in distress.

  • @ravenshadowflight No, the horse is definitely asking for its lunch. If it was bored (or neuroticlol) it would not be gently pawing the ground like this one is. Instead it would be lifting its leg and slamming it down on the ground in front of it before violently dragging it back. Horses are what I like to call 'emo' animals because when they are unhappy they self-harm like chewing their own tails or violently stamping their legs and causing concussion. This horse looks in good condition...

  • @ravenshadowflight Because of humane laws in place in the Untired States, that doesn't happen here. Those thousands of others typically occur in third world countries.

Now, find a case where a LEGALLY operating horse and carriage service overworked their horses and they died of exhaustion in the United States, and I say there is an issue with whatever animal control agency that was supposed to be inspecting those horses.

And you're wrong, that is normal healthy neurotypical behavior for horses.

  • @flareion09 Well said, thanks

  • Let's see. Visual (Least what can be seen by video) horse health checklist.

Harness and other gear fits: Check

Ear position: Stays up and aleart fairly consistantly, horse is not in pain.

Ribs: Do not show, obviously a well fed horse.

Shyness: Horse doesn't mind being touched and handled even around the face

Driver's Knowledge: At the very least understands what his horse is wearing and how to tie his horse up

Wow that horse is in bad shape...

  • thank you for posting these wonderful videos. before seeing this, I was fooled by peta's lies and did not know that wonderful people like you are around taking care of the horses. awesome, thank you so much for this complete change of my view on carriage horses!

  • How come the cops the aspca, and everyone else dosen't

    are you special?

  • He won't be gov for long~!

  • Yes he has been brainwashed by petaRDS. We will be calling him to task over his petaRDED statements

That clown has never "seen" our horses.

But the NYPD, the ASPCA, the Health dept, Consumer Affairs, Park Rangers ALL do !

    No abuse reports EVER !

So vote for your petaRDED Gov It will be wasting a vote. Look at all the other petards in offfice, sorry, that WERE in office

Good luck with your nasty lies and innuendo. They have all been exposed watch my vids and see

Go have some fun ride horse!

  • @StopLiesSeeTruth Do you train your own horses to drive? Next horse I get I wouldnt mindgetting him trained to drive. It seems like something very interesting to do.

  • @raphmaster23 Yes, I hand pick them for temperment and manner, amd then train them for the daily routine. I buy my horses from the Amish and Mennonites in Lancaster, PA. So they are well trained to the road and carriage before I get them.

  • @raphmaster23 its the best. i broke an american paint to drive, not your usual driving breed but he is excellent.

  • why do you feed the horse with the bitt in its mouth ?

  • Because taking off the bridle in the street could pose a dangerous situation if the horse spooks. Horses have no problem eating grains or drinking water with a bit, on the other hand a horse should not be allowed to graze or eat hay with the bit. As grass or hay can become entangled with the bit. This won't happen with grains or water.

  • oh yeah srry its been so long since i've had a horse

  • I think that the horses do have a problem drinking water when the Central park troughs are empty, or have a few drops of filthy water in the bottom, for the 68 horses that are in the Park at a given time. Since the horses are working in the Park up to nine hours or more at a time, and there are no water spigots in the Park to fill the water buckets from (This fact is from the 2007 audit done by the City Comptroller's office), it also might make it hard for the horses to drink.

  • You are WRONG. Each carriage has a water bucket under the carriage, there are two water troughs that operate everyday, one at the start if the ride, one at the end. Also there are three fire hydrants, one at 5th ave, one at 6th ave and one at 7th ave which we also use to fill our water buckets. In the winter monthts we also have a solar powered water trough which will not freeze. This is filled by one of our cleaning staff as needed.

No horse works more than 9 hours.

    Another petaRD liar posts

  • this horse looks good but still i don't think a horse supposed to walk in the big city..

its dangeres whit al te traffic

  • Horses built big cities, we have police horses, riding horses, and park ranger horses in NYC !

Is it only dangerous for the carriage horses?

We also have elderly and infants in NYC, is the city too dangerous for them too?

  • Thank you- loved seeing your carriage and harness equipment! I suppose your horses often paw at the ground for feed. Im sure it's irritating- correcting the behavior would only inflame petards. If my horse did that out on a ride when asked to stand still - we would have a talk about it! Unbelievable how you must defend yourself. Once again I commend you for your patience.

  • You are correct, sometimes we have to allow bratty behavior, correcting would be misinterpreted.

As far as being patient, not many would give me that acalade !!!

    Thanks for you kind words.

  • Looks like a regulated business to me.

Horses and equipment look in good shape.

Whiners have to whine, so there will always be idiot knownothings crying foul.

The idea is to discredit them, and show them for the moronic parrots that they are.

  • Why do people go on and on about things like this?? Yes, there are some abused carriage horses, but I do not believe that the whole industry is abusing horses. I own horses....does the Peta people who preach about "rescuing " these animals and bringing them t live on a farm where "they can run"...do they want to foot the bill of boarding and feeding each horse!! Horses need a job!

I think many of the people that complain have no horse knowledge whatsoever

  • "yes there are some abused carriage horses" !!??!

    REALLY ?

    Where exactly ?

The animal rights have been saying this for years, with not one shred of evidence !

Our horses are on public view everyday, if some are abused as you say, why then do the ASPCA, Health Dept, Consumer Affairs, Police Dept, Parks Dept or the crazed animal rights groups find any of this "abuse" ??!!??

I know you seem to be on our side, but the above quote is so typical, but no proof!!

Shake my hand, then slap my face !

  • people need to thing about their own behavior and compare it to horses. We actually stand in much the same way as horses. Shift weight from one side to the other when we stand, and pick one foot up and rest on the other. Also, we get impatient waiting for our food and restless. My horse does the same, the 50 horses at my stable do the same.

  • Whos lying? What in Gods name are you talking about.

  • You just don't want to admit your nasty pre- conceived notions to be WRONG !

Even in the face of truth!

Lameness is determined at a walk or trot, not when the horse is standing still.

Don't try your shit with me.

The point of showing the horse at rest was to explain that the rest postion is NORMAL.

You can see this horse in this and other vids trotting and walking, NOT LAME.

The one trying to put out false info is you, and you know it.

The facts are presented above and in other SLST vids

  • A little petarded here, talking out of both sides of your mouth. A little alluding to lying, and faking lameness.

Typical m.o. of a PeTard. """yawn"""

  • It looks like you keep good care of your horses, but on the other hand horses weren't designed to stand on the side of a busy road on pavement and loud vehicles. Has that horse ever been on a 2 acre turnout? Or ever eaten fresh green grass? Do your horses even get hay? It looks like they get oats and bran, which is not a suitable diet. I would like to see their living conditions and would like to know the method of which you dispose of your animals when they are old and/or lame.

  • OH BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!! If you bothered your ass watching my videos of my 108 acre farm, or my state of the art stable that would answer your questions. PS...horses BUILT cities!

  • but on the other hand, you suck !!

  • peta and hsus is bunch of lies, this horses are not abused or neglected theyre treated just like other horses are. and theyre being taken cared good and everytime they work they get reward for it. so i dont see any abuse done to the horses

  • Thank you for an objective factual comment.

  • Once again the lies of PETArds exposed.

These horses don't need 'saving' from anything. The are thriving, even in the current economy.

When will people wake up and see that peta , the hsus, the aspca, all take the exceptions and make them appear like the rule. They are killers not savers.

Where have all the donations collected recently to try to put this American Iconic Tradition ot of business. Where is all the money that people were duped into sending these Holier than thou orgs!?!?

  • I agree totally; PETA is the most dangerous "charity" ever. They have an FBI file for their contributions to the ALF & ELF, two known domestic terrorist groups. We need to get their non-profit status revoked & get them in jail! Write your congressmen & band together to stop the ignorant, greedy liars!

  • Their non-profit status is an insult to REAL charities.

    Where does that $30,000,000 go.

Exterminating animals can't cost that much!

  • I'm sure they paid a hefty amount to the genius who came up with 'Sea Kittens'

We sure know they aren't spending it on uniforms. The bikinis their skanky protesters wear definitely didn't cost 30 mil.

  • What an inapropriate pairing, Exploiting human flesh to "save", and therefore execute the animal who had to be saved from exploitation?!?!?!!

  • No kidding. I don't consider myself a feminist, but they way PeTA uses women as 'meat' to get their point across is very vile to me.

  • The fact is this business is heavily regulated and scrutinized by many, most of the scrutinizers are biased!!!

Yet they still can't substanciate their claims of "abuse" and "torture"

Not to mention that the horses are ON VIEW everyday on 59h St !!

    Where is the abuse!?!

Stop lying! Find a real cause.

PETA lies, animal rights is a farce!

  • The Forth Reich describes them pretty well.

  • Not Just PETA but the HSUS is pushing laws to regulate animal ownership. Will be banning Trail riding next. They want to regulate ownership to death to force us to be Pet Free and vegans. Its not about welfare its about how to take our rights away.

  • Yep. Its about them forcing their anthropromorphized views of animals upon the rest of us.

  • Anthropomorphism is a good word for what their doing. Assuming animals COULD be granted equal rights, then what? They have the right to vote? Earn the same pay? Be home owners? My horses don't care who's president, and I get the feeling they would not diligently pay their bills. No thumbs to write the checks. Does that qualify them for a handicap parking space?

This is the silliest post I've ever typed.

  • Wow, those horses look amazing! I have those questions asked all the time too! why is he standing like that? are we too heavy for him? Now I have a better answer! I usually tell people that I lean more on one leg too sometimes when I'm resting. People do that, why can't they? plus, carriages have wheels, which makes it so much easier to pull. Horses can pull 7 times their own weight... elephants can pull 4 times. If a draft horse weighs 2000 lbs, he's not going to have trouble with a few people.

  • I've always explained it like a military 'at ease' pose. The horse has to remain standing, but he does so in a way that's more comfortable to him.

  • Don't feel that way, that's what they want. THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THEM!! Only a point of a percent of Americans are rabbid vegans/petards/humaniacs, although they have a non stop propaganda machine, their numbers are small. UNITE, get the TRUTH out. DON'T TAKE THEIR CRAP. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELVES. DEFEND YOUR BUSINESS'S. YOUR WAY OF LIFE! WAKE UP!! THEY ARE COMMING FOR YOUR DOGS AND CATS DON'T LET THEM TARGET YOUR CHILDREN!!!!! THAT'S TEIR FAVORITE "TACTIC"
  • Thanks for te kind words, your support is priceless. Sometimes in businsee like ours, it's easy to feel alone and against the world. We must realise to unite under our common goal of discredit the animal wrongs, the fight would bring their lies to the fore, preferably a court of law, under oath,

  • another wonderful informative video! Although most of this one was basic horse stuff. Like the leg thing. A only relaxed happy horse rests its foot. You must get a bunch of city folk that never even seen anything but a cartoon horse before complaining about everything they can. My new cart is so light my kids enjoy being the horse and pulling each other around in it! Its just funny!

  • Good job. Keep posting. The sad thing is that so few people know this basic knowledge that you have to teach it. This is also the way that horses sleep most of the time. They only lie down for an hour or so a day, even in the wild.

  • I've had non-horse people ask about the leg shifting too. One gelding in our barn will get so relaxed while being brushed that you could almost tip him over.

  • I had someone who claimed to actually OWN A HORSE ask me about it. She claimed she had never seen her horse do it. (Obviously, she didn't spend much time around her horse.)

  • Plausable. If you've ever run a boarding stable, you'd see that some people buy and expensive horse, pay expensive boarding fees, buy expensive tack, and NEVER VISIT THE HORSE!! We had boarders you could count on two visit TWO times a YEAR.

  • These horses look great. People across the country are losing their homes!!!

These horses have no fear of eviction!!

Why does peta not care about American families!?!?

Some of the millions they collect would be better used helping Americans right now, instead of euthinizing healthy animals, in the name of Animal Rights?!?!?!?
