But the language is remarkable. My god. It´s unearthly, Almost magical.

I´m not very used to hear Icelandic.

How ironic - this beautiful song (Icelandic version) is actually about the rather nasty realities of a medieval winter in Iceland! Well - living in a turf hut near the arctic circle during mid-winter is rather chilling...

The lyrics, however, focus on the relief brought on by the approach of Christmas (or the Yule celebrations, hijacked by the medieval church...), with emphasis on the relief brought by a lighted candle by the window. The wind brings holy Christmas to the children (continued)

I assembled the lyrics (in Icelandic), intending to do a literal translation to english. Well, I gave up- the text is almost 800 characters, and the translation will be even longer (max comment: 500 char). Maybe later.

But - @hroskar puts his finger on it, the alliteration (an ancient memory-aid technique) is very good, and if Eyvör did it herself, she is even more talented than I imagined.

My guess, however, is that she got some local help, this type of poetry is a very specialized art!

In addition to rhyme, an important part of making lyrics and poetry sound good in Icelandic is to match up the initial sounds of the three most emphatic words in each line. Example, using capital letters:

@quedizni My personal interpretations of both songs (Swedish and Islandic) are that Eivor's version is about the harsh polar circle winter, but in admiration and respect. One More Time's version is about the personifications of the winter season and nature - the the wild one and the dance between them. The English version, "Wilderness Mistress", is more close to the Swedish version.

@glupsamja very similar , the story goes that when the people went from Norway to Iceland (the vikings aroung the year 900) the ones that got too seasick where left at the Fareo Islands, some visited from Iceland later, so the language and the people are very connected :)
