Yeah, it is funny how inspiration works. It may not even be intentional and he may not even realize it, but some part of the monks segment must have impressed itself upon his subconscious long ago...now it comes out in the form of an amazing story (Anathem)...Stephenson is the master of improving and even inventing genres though...one of my all time favorites!
@tananaphillips Yes, you may be right. Looking at the Anathem trailer it has similar tibethan monk chanting and asian main character, so at least some inspiration must surely come from here.
@jandroid66 Are you a Stephenson fan? If so, have you read Big U? If not, you should read it...it is his first novel and was actually out of print because he was not pleased with it...However, in reading it you find the basis for all of his other stories...all his interests come out and if you have read the other novels you really get a feel for the origins of his ideas.

This is the origin of Stephenson's Anathem...watch part one and then this one...Now I see why he started getting so facinated by monks as a story...
