watch jojos vid, sez you can do single doubles and 3s. more to the point i see alotta nerdos sayin this is it this isnt. ultimatly, if you play easy smoothly and in pocket youre playing well. my wrists and fingers are very very tight from work. sos i try my best to loosen and play moller but im limited in motion. cheers
Sorry buddy but you're wrong and it's a shame cos it means you're missing out on something really great. Chapin said it should be learned as a three but once mastered it's uses are endless. Look at a video on here called Jim Chapin - Moeller Technique - Part 1 (jim and Dom Famularo) and you'll see him demonstrating moeller technique as 1, 2, 3 and 4 strokes with each hand. You're missing the point like so many do - moeller technique is a motion, not a number
what i thought the moeller was a three "stroke" motion. i'm pretty sure i even heard it in a chapin video. this is just the whiping motion. the moeller would be the whip still.. but... stroke,tap,up-stroke. rather than stroke, up-stroke.
Moeller technique is just the motion. It can be one, two, three, fifty strokes, doesnt matter man - its just the motion that allows fluid playing and smooth accents.
Do U feel comfortable playing double stroke rolls with this grip? Cos when I place the forefinger forward to press more for faster moeller strokes (the grip is between the middle finger and the thumb), i loose the finger control (for which I use the middle finger, but the grip is between the forefinger and the thumb)?
Get lessons man, they always help. And doing everything slow and perfecting it before you go into faster tempo's is Crucial. I personally play Trad but I mastered both grips and found matched grip has a whole different feel and really opened up my creativity to drumming. (That's just me though)
But make sure if you're looking for a teacher to find someone who can teach advanced lessons and not just 9 year olds..
Well, I think someone can and should learn from anybody else. It doesn't matter being better than him/her, older or younger. When I saw for the first time this video of wingnutrules, believe me, this was my Crucial moment. All I needed after that was time only. I've got the creativity needed :) And besides, I learned moeller single stroke roll doing it faster first, then in slower tempo... and first with 4, then with 3 strokes. I guess it's different with anybody :)
Actually I did that also, and you lose control. My teacher said when doing moeller stroke try to keep the index finger secure or else the rest of your fingers squeeze to compensate for the lack of control so you don;t play as relaxed.
Moeller it's not about how many notes you gain in one arm movement...it's about the whip motion...and yes, the guy in the video is using the Moeller motion...
And there are three heights too, the low, medium and full motion...he is using something like the low motion...
Good job. But watch out for switching to pure bounce at the higher speeds. It's no a press roll -- you have to articulate each hit with the wrist. Check out Chapin or Wasserman's vids on this. Again, good job, but slow down and get the technique down pat before you speed it up.
Do you have any video of yourself doing this technique? You mentioned this twice now. I'd like to see how you do it, and how well. Just wondering, it helps to be sure that you're getting good advice from someone who can actually execute it.
actually its not that its a press roll... it can be interpreted as a controlled and staggerred open roll... theres varying opinion after years... chapin has taught both but clearly says the technique isnt dependant on the bounce and said to work with both
nice job!

Moeller is three notes a hand
brokeassdrummer 2 years ago
@brokeassdrummer No - moeller can be ANY number of strokes. Youre confusing the actual techniqe with a common application of it.
drummerkingmike 2 years ago 8
Chapin said so himself. It's 3

Moeller is a technique, there are loads of exercises to practise it.
Most commonly with accents is 2's, 3's and 4's on each hand alternately.

the actual true moeller grip is the "fife and drum" grip traditional grip with one hand and the "back of the hand" (match grip)
using the pinky as the fulcrum

the moeller technicque was founded on civil war snare players who also were the proponent of traditional grip
