It began with the Hasbro Transformers toy line." its the first thing on the page(if you looking on the page I was on), I only know this because I watched the some episodes of original show which was created by Marvel Comics. Takara Tomy was only commissioned to create the molds for the toys, they did not create the idea as you suggested earlier.
