Celtic Christianity in Hibernia lasted up until the Saxon Pope Adrian IV (Nicholas Breakspear) published the Papal Bull Laudabiliter in 1155AD which usurped the Culdee Church. That's why the Normans invaded Saxon England in 1066.

The Normans invaded Saxon England in 1066, organised by bishops in Normandy, the intention to conquer Saxon England and from there to destroy the Culdee Churches in Scotland and Hibernia (the name "Ireland" was imposed by Pope Leo X in the 16th century). Celtic Christianity was replaced by Latin Christianity in the 12th century. Same in Scotland, King David I married Saxon Queen Margaret, a Romanist who persecuted the Culdees.

I should also point out that the Culdee Church (at least in Scotland - not sure about Ireland) existed right down to the time of the Lollards and the Reformation. History isn't a mess per se, it has been covered up - most books have been suppressed by Roman Canon Law.
