I own the 450 and trust me you will not shit your pants over any bump, the ride quality is amazing and 0-60 comes up fast and smooth, and i have to say that it is an exceptional car when it comes to driving off road, needless to mention the interior material is much better than any land cruiser, and finally it will haul most things you put it through. I don't need to make a point any further than this, if you don't believe me go to a dealer and take it for a test drive, hey its free :)
we got the this GL, we got the ML, and the R class, in the future Mercedes should offer a Crew cap pickup similar to the honda ridgeline, they could use the same engine that they would use on this SUV and the name of the Mercedes truck I would call it a Mercedes Benz TL-Class, it would have a 5 foot bed with 4 door crew cab.

Having read so many back and forths, I must point out: Mercedes Benz is not only the first automaker, they are STILL in business. Something that regardless of current stats, remains an unchangeable fact.
the GL has a proper third row; significantly more spacious than the X5 or the Q7. it's the second row where the GL really shines. Unlike the Volvo XC90, which barely fits a child car seat, the GL can easily make the room available. My opinion is that the GL has nicest exterior looks - especially the new 2010- and the most refined interior. Paddle shifting is nice, too. I drove every competitor (except the Caddy, theres no way I'm buying that thing) and bought the GL 350 without hesitation.
@77mrmoo You're not supposed to put a child seat in the 3rd row seats, that's why Volvo doesn't make it for that plus the XC90 is smaller. The 3rd row seats are meant for older kids.

this is the Best SUV in the world, with the diessel engine, because you get 25 MPG on the highway, its easier to park between other bigger cars, it seats up to 7 people, and bunch of good feature, and it cost $8,000 less than the navigator and the escalade.
Has anyone else noticed that this car's second row seats are very squeaky? Whenever I sit in them, they sound like they're about to collapse over bumps. I'm 174 lbs, could that be why?
The X5's third row is basically useless. It's just good enough for small children, while the GL's is comfortable even for adults. Plus, the GL has more cargo room behind the third row.
I've been in one. I can tell you that unless you're 4-8 years old, you will barely fit. The GL has full sized seats, with better cushioning and support. Read comparisons, reviews, etc. You'll see.
CARFANATIC is right. You can put a third row in the M-class, but its pretty useless. The longer body of the GL accomodates the third row passengers much better.
Mercedes cars are not about a long list of standard kit. They are about long lasting quality.
Get into a taxi in Germany, it will probably be a Mercedes E class. Look at how many kilometres it has done. It might well say 400,000. Check the seats, have they sagged? Check the way the doors operate, have they dropped? Listen for rattles and squeaks, how many are there? Compare with the occasional Ford / Opel taxi with same mileage. There is no comparison.
I recently got rid of an E class having driven it from new over 8years for about 125,000 miles. It didnt really feel any different to drive from the day I bought it.
I now drive a GL420CDI (in Europe). Excellent car. Not because of a long list of equipment but because of the depth of designed in capability. Step out of it after a 10hr drive often at speeds of 125mph (Germany) unstressed and relaxed. Thats what it was designed to do, not offer lot of cheap bling.
Sure, the Escalade outsells it. But it's just a statement about being big and chrome. Mercedes is about refinement, it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, it fits in, but it still looks nice.
When you see someone in a "Caddy" you think of a gangster. What do you think of when you see someone in a Benz? Certainly not a gangster.
i read most of these comments, and noticed that most of you guys are american lovers...the only problem is you are comparing the caddilac's 6.2l motor with the gl's 4.5l motor...just remember, the mercedes has a 6.5l amg engine...of course it costs more, but there are some optionals on the mercedes that the caddilac doesnt have...for example...the mercedes "distronic"(check it up), or nightvision...and remember...higher costs but u got a merz...
The GL class is not offered with Distronic at least here in America I think 80k is a lot to ask for this vehicle. For one the Navigation displays is poor... very prehistoric and there is not remote start. knowing this I would gladly look at competitors American or not.
of course ray, actually there are many american cars which i would take over german cars anyday, and i've ridden a lot of them, just because american car companies are in troubles don't fool yourself by thinking german were superior to american cars. i know that many german car makers have silently taken american innvoations which came standart on american cars way earlier, and put them into their cars later on.

the whole point is, that you can't choose economy with big USA SUV's. but with German big SUV's you have always choice of economy - or performance. and if you want performance - the AMG's are much faster than any other American SUV. show me one which can do over 170 mph - there is none.. AMG can do this any time.

@kagolko Your nuts if you appreciate odd looking cheap plastic interior well know from Mercedes. Far from being a good buy, Especially with other options like LR/RR, Lexus and Porsche.
The Suv look ok not great in my opinion meaning, is not offensive, but left a clear good amount of space to do better for the competitive market.
The interior, VERY plastic, and the cheap looking and feel kind. Come on, is a Mercedes we are talking about, Not a Chrysler or a Ford. And for that i give it 21/2-5.

this is the Best SUV in the world, with the diessel engine, because you get 25 MPG on the highway, its easier to park between other bigger cars, it seats up to 7 people, and bunch of good feature, and it cost $8,000 less than the navigator and the escalade.

Just bought one for my wife, great car.
I have 3 kids, trust me... a 3rd row seat is really helpful. (Less fights in the back seat) Anyways, great car, great looks, great performance !

Has anyone else noticed that this car's second row seats are very squeaky? Whenever I sit in them, they sound like they're about to collapse over bumps. I'm 174 lbs, could that be why?

It is very comfortable, the ride is so smooth, and you have enough space for 7 full-sized adults. And also this car is FAST, acceleration is amazing.

The X5's third row is basically useless. It's just good enough for small children, while the GL's is comfortable even for adults. Plus, the GL has more cargo room behind the third row.

I've been in one. I can tell you that unless you're 4-8 years old, you will barely fit. The GL has full sized seats, with better cushioning and support. Read comparisons, reviews, etc. You'll see.

I sold my 99 ML-320 for an 05 ML-500. My friend has an X5. She has third row seating in hers. I thought it would be an expensive waste on mine.

The third row seats are barely a row, it's just two seats dumped in the rear trunk. X5 and M-class are the exact same size.

CARFANATIC is right. You can put a third row in the M-class, but its pretty useless. The longer body of the GL accomodates the third row passengers much better.

Mercedes cars are not about a long list of standard kit. They are about long lasting quality.
Get into a taxi in Germany, it will probably be a Mercedes E class. Look at how many kilometres it has done. It might well say 400,000. Check the seats, have they sagged? Check the way the doors operate, have they dropped? Listen for rattles and squeaks, how many are there? Compare with the occasional Ford / Opel taxi with same mileage. There is no comparison.

I recently got rid of an E class having driven it from new over 8years for about 125,000 miles. It didnt really feel any different to drive from the day I bought it.
I now drive a GL420CDI (in Europe). Excellent car. Not because of a long list of equipment but because of the depth of designed in capability. Step out of it after a 10hr drive often at speeds of 125mph (Germany) unstressed and relaxed. Thats what it was designed to do, not offer lot of cheap bling.

Sure, the Escalade outsells it. But it's just a statement about being big and chrome. Mercedes is about refinement, it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, it fits in, but it still looks nice.
When you see someone in a "Caddy" you think of a gangster. What do you think of when you see someone in a Benz? Certainly not a gangster.

i read most of these comments, and noticed that most of you guys are american lovers...the only problem is you are comparing the caddilac's 6.2l motor with the gl's 4.5l motor...just remember, the mercedes has a 6.5l amg engine...of course it costs more, but there are some optionals on the mercedes that the caddilac doesnt have...for example...the mercedes "distronic"(check it up), or nightvision...and remember...higher costs but u got a merz...

The GL class is not offered with Distronic at least here in America I think 80k is a lot to ask for this vehicle. For one the Navigation displays is poor... very prehistoric and there is not remote start. knowing this I would gladly look at competitors American or not.

of course ray, actually there are many american cars which i would take over german cars anyday, and i've ridden a lot of them, just because american car companies are in troubles don't fool yourself by thinking german were superior to american cars. i know that many german car makers have silently taken american innvoations which came standart on american cars way earlier, and put them into their cars later on.

A German asking for an American car? wow! The third row in the GL offers more leg room then the Escalade but more elbow room then the GL just watch this clip as women seats in rear. her knees not in chest unlike escalade which is like sitting on floor.
