I know that this may sound like a dumb question, but are the Taliban really that stupid? What I mean by that is, there is a patrol walking next to a wall and the Taliban fire on the Canadians from the other side of the wall from long distance? I'm no military expert or anything, but it doesn't sense. If it was me, I'd be laying in ambush to the right and wait for the enemy to all be by the wall and then start shooting, preferably with a couple of RPG's. Can anyone explain? Thank you.

They could have been moving, then saw them, and prepared to ambush the Canadians from their current position. They probably didn't have time to move unseen to the side of the wall they are on. But we'll never know, those Taliban are probably dead or lying in shell holes somewhere now. :P

So you basically return fire at the spot where you think the shots are coming from until you find a better strategy. I would say that they are attacking from 500 to 800 meters.

I would say it's more likely with approval he bought it himself and was allowed to use it in theatre. it's not uncommon WITH approval from your chain of command.
