I used to be a western guy, but I'm going to get back into horses and will be focusing on training. I might adopt an ex-racer mainly for the challenge. A lot can be learned while fixing a psychotic racehorse. This transformation is really motivating. I would love to help do that to an animal.
thankyou this is what i have my horse on so i shall see how it goes. how did u get your horse to hold his head low and collected all the time? my tb holds his so high and i am stuck with ideas on how to lower it and get him on the bit?
@missbabylon5... well this question is probably best answered by an instructor, not something easily answered in a sentence on YouTube! I would suggest getting a riding coach or trainer to help you with this one!! Good luck with it though! It all takes time and patience. :-)
@missbabylon5 Sorry to butt in but what i did with my TB is I used a German Martingale for about 6 months. they are not super expensive and connect to the reins, so the horse may more easily frame it;s head. Also simply forcing your horses head down never strengthens the muscles in their necks and causes them to be very heavy in the head so it is good to get the horse really moving with it's hind end. Hope this helps!
@drinkmoretui Thanks! The video spans a period of about 18 months - two years. This video is fairly old now, so he has since improved further - I think Im due to make an updated version!! :- )
how did you get him to gain weight healthily i have just bought an ex racehorse but i am finding it hard getting him to gain weight any tips would be very helpful :)
@missbabylon5 Well, Im no expert lol, but he is fed two hard feeds a day and plenty of hay. At the start I experimented with a few different feeds over time, until I found one I was happy with. Every horse is different. My horse took several long months before he put any decent amount of weight on, so be patient - its a slow process!! :-) The most important thing is a balanced diet and make sure he is getting enough feed. Also, excercising him is important to gain muscle. Good luck with him!
@mustluvahorse - I would do lots and lots of transitions - halt to walk, walk to halt, walk to trot, trot to walk etc... If she knows her voice commands on the lunge, you can use your voice commands to help her understand what you're asking. Remember to reward every try. She'll soon get the idea! If you can, get a riding intructor/trainer to help you out :-)
I just got my first OTTB and im having a hard time keeping her at a walk. She likes to trott in place and be skiddish and when she stops she walks backwards. Shes verry sweet and good temperament. She is pretty good with w/t/c on a loung line but when i get on her its a whole different story. Any strategies for keeping her at a walk and not trotting???? please help. Thank you!

Dang! It doesn't even look like the same horse! How'd you do it? I mean he went from really short and fast trot strides to huge elegant strides!
