Your picture of the reference coil does not show (to me) clearly how it is connected to the circuit board. You said to secure the ends of the coil at each end within a hole drilled into it. Do I solder two pieces of wire to the coil it self and then connect to the circuit board. Could you clarify the connection between the coil and circuit board?
The reference coil will be quite close to the circuit board> so when you make it leave two long flying ends and connect these to the board. No need to connect other wires. Small holes are just to stop the wires from undoing
I purchased the materials to be used except the transistors which happens to be unavailable in our country. Can i use the one's found in any transistor radios instead?i'd appreciate any suggestions!
You probably can. There are only two types of transistors: NPN and PNP, but a wide variance among these. Read through the description of the circuit board.
If you can make sure that all four NPN transistors are identical (same model number) then it's likely to work. Significant differences between them may cause problems, but you can only find out if you try.
I have made my own metal detector, but it isin't working. I used 2n2222a npn transistor. Can you tell me what could be wrong? Please help. Thanks

I tried your building instructions of the metal detector.
First I etched the PCB.From other old PCBs I took the capacitors,
resistors. I also had new 2N 3904 transistors. I put it all together but
it doesn´t work. One side of the 0.1 uf capacitors says: "104 24V". Is
24V to low? I found no 2.2 m ohm resistor,so I put a few resistors
togetheruntil I hadabout 2.2 m ohm. Can I dothis? I also mesured the voltage ofboth coils. Itwas almost zero. I noticed, that one transistor got hot.
Please help!

Most small npn transistors will work on this. Try 2N3904 or 2N2222A

How deep?

Just a few inches for coins

Many years ago I found plenty of UK coins with this detector, in local parks and woodland.

Have you found anything underground?
