Its always bothered me that this episode has a monstrous gaping hole in the special effects. Towards the end, they leave earth heading for the sun. What do we see, other stars going by and no Sun in sight. That's completely illogical. If we can see the sun from earth, then the sun would always be visible on a trip from the earth to the sun. And since the sun is a lot closer than the nearest star, we would not see other stars going by. Are you smarter than a 5th grader?
Plays like a replay of the 1948 Captain Charles Mantell Kentucky UFO incident. The UFO was huge, like the Enterprise. Mantell's body was never found, and no trace of him in the plane wreckage. The wreckage was pitted with many small holes, inexplicably.
@TRENZ2 We know that now, only because we've seen this episode but here, Kirk is playing it loose shooting from the hip livin in the moment. He's never had this experiece before so he doesn't think about it.
Ironic that continuity is the principle thing that ruins a time travel episode. How does a starship that 'warps' across the galaxy normally, finds itself encoutering a 'black star'? You think you'd have charted anything dangerous like that before you had a warp drive? And all the other exotic things that violate physics, beaming two object together and nothing happened? How did the chase get resolved? And how can Capt. Christopher's return change history? It could have been explained better.
Has anyone noticed, how Spock often, and has no problem with, touching Uhura? He often grabs her by the arms, helping her up, yet not even when Kirk is down, does he help him. It looks like Star Trek 2009 did not just make up the Uhura/Spock relationship - it was sort of there the whole time!
@FangedFashionista Yes, but I have yet to see emotional reactions triggered by Uhura in TOS. Touching is a very sensitive thing for a Vulcan, yes, but showing emotion is an even bigger deal. Kirk can get an emotional/human response from Spock quite often (however, not with out a bit of work).
Also, I haven't seen really a time where Spock was hesitent to grab a hold of Kirk when need be.
I think there is a posibility, but Abrams did strech it. Scotty/Uhura is more canon than Spock/Uhura.
But I think It's something deeper for Kirk/Spock. He's not a "lover," to him. He's a brother. I deem it unfortunate that everytime someone shows any affection, whether it's sibling love, friendship love, or real love, that people have to turn it into something inappropriate.
@FangedFashionista True, but I do not think, of all the lovely ladies that Uhura is the one for Spock. I don't really believe he is like, in "sexy times" love with Kirk, but I do not find the Spock/Uhura relationship to be canon either.
But I'm a Christine lover, so I am a bit biased! <3
She's been there the whole time, secretly taking care of Spock (As shown when Spock is going into Pon Farr) and nobody except maybe Doctor McCoy and kirk have seen the chemestry there! I'm not a big fan of Uhura/Spock either (probably due to the fact that whenever Spock does the slightest thing (like raising an eyebrow) it sends my heart into a race of GooGoo love! :D
Why is it that when they are going back in time, in an effort to get back to the future, only the ship's clock is going in reverse? If the ship's clock is going in reverse in response to backward time travel, wouldn't the contents of the ship including the crew, also go in reverse. Maybe time travel only targets clocks for this kind of response.
I love this episode, but there are some major holes in it. I just kind of over look them, and enjoy the show
In Requiem For Methuselah, Spock employs a type of head clamp on Kirk, who was distraught over the death of his android flame. Spock urges Kirk to "forget". I wonder why that power wasn't deployed here to make the Air Force captain forget. I guess it would have gutted the episode.
I have seen this episode many times. I am a Trekkie from way back and I believe the origina series is the best in its own respect. Anyone else agree, send me a comment, let me know how ya feel about star Trek. l
@buccaneer43207 Ok, thanks for the info, my mistake, my point still stands though. It still proves that the Enterprise wouldn't re-enter Earth's atmosphere simply because it was visible to the people on the ground.
If the enterprise got low enough in the atmosphere to be seen it would plummet to earth! Its gigantic space ship, not designed to enter the atmosphere.
Lol at 45:08, for someone from the past, and doesn't know jack about starships, he knows right where the communications switch is on the transporter controls...lol
@CoryPurcell. You think I was angry? You have not seen anger kid. I hat disrespecting kids telling me to "calm down" especially when I'm not angry. That DOES make me very ANGRY! "calm down" What is that? The Im right but dont hurt me quiver? Grow up!
@CoryPurcell. If you were being observant you would have noticed that Captain Christopher was observing everyone from the moment he first arrived to the point of departure. Plus Uhura showed Captain Christopher the bridge and how her station worked. Top quote Sherlock Holmes "You see but you do not observe."
@CoryPurcell So did Bele and Lokai in Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. When they wanted off the ship at the planet Charon to continue their blood feud, they simply ran up to the transporter and operated it! The magic of television.
Also back in the 60's the black box's didn't have images, only audio and some basic recoding of time frames and cockpit settings, so there no way images were recorded inside the blacknoxes..but then again, what the hell am I doing using my brain power on this silly subject...excuse me, while I go outside and get a life
SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS: How does the military have photographs of the Enterprise? They can't be from a black box on Christopher's airplane because the tractor bream COMPLETELY broke up the aircraft.

@AmbassadorHodin. In the 1960's there was no digital photography. The Air Force found the black box and the camera. The plane was broken up not obliterated. I hope this helps you.
@AmbassadorHodin It makes no sense that Capt. Christopher and the other guy could be simply beamed back into their own bodies. All the teleporter does is move things; and since the two men's original/past bodies were still there they wouldn't be teleported into them, they would simply be teleported there to coexist along with them i.e. there would be two Capt. Christophers, because both of his bodies (past and present) still exist.
@AmbassadorHodin It makes no sense that when they beam Cap. Christopher back into himself that the Enterprise would no longer be there in the sky. That event never changed, so the Enterprise would still be there in the sky, Cap. Christopher would be beamed aboard the Enterprise again and an infinite loop of events would be set into motion where the Cap. would see the Enterprise, be beamed aboard, be returned to his plane, see the Enterprise (again), be beamed aboard (again) and so on and so on
@AmbassadorHodin. That same physicist explained that to me as well. The Enterprise can't be in two places at once. Now that the Enterprise is flying past that part the first Enterprise is not there. It's as if it never happened. You see because the enterprise can't be in earths atmosphere and at the same time wiping around the solar system at high warp. The causality loop was broken.
One thing I've never understood is the ending. So, is the theory of time travel in this episode that if you time travel before an event occurs in your life, you have no memory of that event?
bobm174, remember the players that lost memory of the event were not time travelers until transported and only lost memory of the event after placed back before the transport.
@bobm174. @bobm174. I would like to answer that. I asked a physicist the same question. He said "Because two identical objects can't be in the same place at the same time the molecules reset them selves to that particular time. So, by beaming them into them selves everything they learned would be erased in order to maintain balance in space time. That is as simple as I can put it."
There was a short lived series that my local channel often used to replace Star Trek when ever their afternoon movie ran long. It was called "UFO's". One of their episodes openend almost Identical to this episode. As you can emagin I would miss this episode most of the time thinknig it was "UFO's".

@landline00 People say that Picard is better than Kirk, but didn't Kirk save Picard's life? He fights, partially perfected the drop-kick, and made flying short distances at others look fun.
What did Picard give me? The need to shout out "PICARD!" whenever I watch X-Men
@HetaliaNerd now now don't dis picard....he fights too, especially with a sword. i also think that his grasp of ship to ship battle tatics and diplomacy is better than kirks......however, kirk is still to me the one true captian of the enterprise

I'd be more likely to assume he was from one of the southern states, some mutant spawned from the vast number of incestuous couplings that go on down there.
I know it. Women in the USA did not really resist femininity then -- look at her -- she's not even wearing pants! It's just a long shirt. Females on 1980's - present Star Trek shows wear pant suits. It's great that they've taken steps toward equality, but pant-less attire on hot girls should be brought back.
if beaming people back in time puts them right back in their original bodies, in the moment there were in... how come they werent all nonexistent sparkles in the eyes of their non existent parents?
in reality, wouldnt the two 1960s earth men just be standing next to their past selves?
Yep...I used to watch this show ALL the time as a kid, and never really noticed how bad the sets and effects were...But, I still love the show! look at the screens above the control panels on the bridge in the beginning. They're transparent wrapping paper just pasted in place with the image projected from the other side. When I first saw Galaxy Quest's opening TV scenes, I thought they over did the hamming it up...but after watching several episodes, they were right on the money! hehehe...
I guess there are a lot of "Bonheads" here, because I've never heard it pronounced the way you have it written... Also, I spell checked it, and it said it was spelled "telemetry"
At 7:50, Kirk looks like he's undressing Captain Christopher with his eyes. Really weird how Shatner plays this scene -- like he's got the hots for Christopher and is flirting with him.
Nah, I don't think that's the case at all. Oh, he is admiring what he's looking at, but it's NOT the man, I'm sure... Remember, Kirk admires vintage, or historic antiques. Imagine a military captain in the 23rd century looking at a 20th century military uniform, or space suit. I think he's more amused at it's lack of technical gadgets...
This is a classic, nothing better than something involving our planet and the Enterprise getting caught up in some kind of time warp.....I love it! I'm playing it twice. Gene should of done a couple of more like these.
Your right, Teri Garr was in it, this guy she was working for/ known actor? was some kind of agent/good guy trying to correct some kind of problem with a rocket launch. I'm not certain what his mission was supposed to be.
Cheers to another classic episode of Star Trek and it's a great one in which the Enterprise arrived in 1967 earth. Jeers to another goddamn brooke shields ad thanks a lot bob hope.
Wrong wrong the two men should still have there memory.. They should of went back in time to prevent the first Kirk from even beaming up any one.. that would of fixed it. They never needed to drop the men back off they would of vanished. with my theory..
Easy. He contacted the ship and was transported to a nearby room. Then "POOF! Surprise! *applause*" and Spock moves onto his next trick, cutting a Tribble in half with a saw.

Spock was a total ninja in this episode
Gotta love him

OMG, when Spock beamed down I thought he was going to be dissected and locked in a bottle! Poor baby, I would have been pissed.
Now a days though, if someone saw someone with just some long ears and funky eyebrows, they'd just figure they were from California.
Demithegoddess 2 years ago 7
I'd be more likely to assume he was from one of the southern states, some mutant spawned from the vast number of incestuous couplings that go on down there.

Mr. Spock, the original multi-tasker!!!

Anyone notice Kirk checking out the airforce guy at about 7:45 through 7:50?
Whooa.
mccoybrows 2 years ago
@mccoybrows And he does that even in the presence of Ms Uhura. Airforce guy over Uhura? Blasphemy!!!
huskyjerk 2 years ago
At 3:05 you clearly see Ohura's underwear. I can't believe that made it into the show!

I know it. Women in the USA did not really resist femininity then -- look at her -- she's not even wearing pants! It's just a long shirt. Females on 1980's - present Star Trek shows wear pant suits. It's great that they've taken steps toward equality, but pant-less attire on hot girls should be brought back.
kazuo62 2 years ago
One of the favorite shows.
Anyone remember playing Star Trek: The Arcade Game and hearing Spock say "Welcome Aboard Captain." when a game starts?
classicgamer1968 2 years ago
31:03 reminds me of a WWF/WWE move. i also like the air force major playing dead/hurt at 31:30 from a foward roll and then grabbing kirk.

if beaming people back in time puts them right back in their original bodies, in the moment there were in... how come they werent all nonexistent sparkles in the eyes of their non existent parents?
in reality, wouldnt the two 1960s earth men just be standing next to their past selves?

Note to self: when abducted by aliens onto their spaceship I will also ask for chicken soup.
theurge14 2 years ago 10
They should have made an episode about the computer hijacking the ship. That had potential. Or perhaps they did. I don't know yet.

Yep...I used to watch this show ALL the time as a kid, and never really noticed how bad the sets and effects were...But, I still love the show! look at the screens above the control panels on the bridge in the beginning. They're transparent wrapping paper just pasted in place with the image projected from the other side. When I first saw Galaxy Quest's opening TV scenes, I thought they over did the hamming it up...but after watching several episodes, they were right on the money! hehehe...
rayscreations 2 years ago
lmao, I never noticed it until now. The lighting gives the wrinkle effects in the the paper away when the lights are off.

As a long term Trekkie, I rate this one as a 7. Shatner was a ham, but to bring this episode off, he had to be one!

I guess there are a lot of "Bonheads" here, because I've never heard it pronounced the way you have it written... Also, I spell checked it, and it said it was spelled "telemetry"

At 7:50, Kirk looks like he's undressing Captain Christopher with his eyes. Really weird how Shatner plays this scene -- like he's got the hots for Christopher and is flirting with him.
drwslacy47 2 years ago 6
Nah, I don't think that's the case at all. Oh, he is admiring what he's looking at, but it's NOT the man, I'm sure... Remember, Kirk admires vintage, or historic antiques. Imagine a military captain in the 23rd century looking at a 20th century military uniform, or space suit. I think he's more amused at it's lack of technical gadgets...

This is a classic, nothing better than something involving our planet and the Enterprise getting caught up in some kind of time warp.....I love it! I'm playing it twice. Gene should of done a couple of more like these.

i think there is another similar---with that guy who always held that black cat wherever he went...?
forcedtojointoseevid 2 years ago
Your right, Teri Garr was in it, this guy she was working for/ known actor? was some kind of agent/good guy trying to correct some kind of problem with a rocket launch. I'm not certain what his mission was supposed to be.

LOL! Love this episode! Female personalized computers!! i also liked the people's reaction to Spock. X3

Wrong wrong the two men should still have there memory.. They should of went back in time to prevent the first Kirk from even beaming up any one.. that would of fixed it. They never needed to drop the men back off they would of vanished. with my theory..

But I thought "the Vulcan Science Directorate deemed that time travel was impossible".
Apparently they believe it by now. =)
Spock, you rock.
PottersHallows 2 years ago 3
even if they change the future in that time, it would not effect them, its kinda hard to explain

its because there is nothing to interfere with there life isnt written so it cant mess something up that has not happened yet

"how the hell did spock get outta that room?"

Easy. He contacted the ship and was transported to a nearby room. Then "POOF! Surprise! *applause*" and Spock moves onto his next trick, cutting a Tribble in half with a saw.
