I'm not religious, but this song means a lot to me. It helps me keep a check on my humility in the face of success. A god is loosely defined as a supreme being above human understanding, a being who controls the universe and everything in it or knows everything and can change what they will. Vices like money, drugs, and gambling do not control my universe and they do not control my life. Therefore, they are not my gods. As long as I can remember that, I can live a happier life.
This song talk about anything that can control us, We should only have one God and that is the Lord Jesus Christ anything that interferes with God being number one is considered a god and we need to "Cast down those idols". This song is great, Keith Urban play and sings with feeling, and is an amazing guitarist.
I bet alot of Christian People Bad mouth about this song huh? Well they should really listen carefully. I'm a christian and i already knew what this song was going to be about haha. Keith Urban is the Best Country&Rock artist. God bless to him =D May he continue fighting against drugs and Alcohols.
@TonyoXyooj i,m a bron agian Christain and I have heard this song i,m a huge fan of his and i would never bash or bad mouth this song GOD bless you and Keith Urban
Wow, don't know how I missed this song, guess main stream radio doesn't play it - or maybe I did just miss it. I love it. He's amazing. Singing the truth! Ya gotta love it.
for those of you who are confused, he's talking about harmful (and addictive) substances. the "G" is only capitalized because it's part of the title of the song. a more correct way to look at it would be "You're not my god."
Keith is saying to drugs and alcohol and money and all the things of the "world" that THEY are not the GOD He serves..... It's actually very religious..... If any of the ACLU members or some other Liberal idiot ever figures that out, you won't be able to watch this video on Youtube anymore......
I LOVE this song, i love how he actually worked for his fame and how i dont get the impression that he thinks he's better than anyone else just cuz he can sing.
@claireluvshedgehogs No...he's talking about drugs & alcohol that controlled him early in his career. He's talking about the addiction being like his "god" when he was hooked on them Pretty powerful!
@claireluvshedgehogs No Keith isn't an atheist. He's singing about his past, he had issues with drugs and alcohol. When he sings the line about little white lies on a mirror, cut neatly in a row. He's singing about his use of cocaine. He is saying that drugs are only temporary happiness that tear up your life, and they won't rule his life anymore. They aren't his God...he mentions soul searching. He's found the right path now.
I only ''discoved'' Keith last year through a friend on a mutual art site... wow.. am I glad I did... I love Keiths talent, whatever he has done, or will do.. one thing is certain, God loves him!! and my God bless you now and forevermore .. You rock Keith@!!!!!
This song is helping me along in my attempts to stay clean even for today. tim42476 you're absolutely right, most drug addicts are very talented and smart PEOPLE. Consuming the actual drug itself is the last step in the relapse process. I'm an addict that takes comfort in these songs to stay clean; so I'm with ya on everything you say, buddy!
Keith Urban is not only a supreme musician and entertainer, but his honesty shines in his music and is reflected in his life ... "You're not my God" expresses KU's honesty in the difficulties of taking the fight on against addicition and in that, knowing the journey is never easy ... Addiction is a hidden element in many lives ... Keith Urban has never said he is a marter, but he is definately an inspiration to others who are finding the road more difficult then he ... KU - #1
We've all had problems in life, no one is exempt. Anyone who thinks Keith Urban is a bum, well you are entitled to your opinion. Fact is Keith Urban puts his heart and soul into his music and his music along with the support of great friends and family have made an extremely positive impact on his life as it now is. I think we can all agree that Keith is an extremely talented man with regards to his musical abilities, both playing instruments and singing. I'm a fan and always will be.
@tim42476 Not a bum - far from it. If they are referencing his substance abuse well then you dont judge a man by how he handles his success but by how he handles his losses. Keith is human as we all are. Well said tim!
This is on the Golden Road cd btw and keith is not a bum he's really good at what he does and he's one of the few people that sound the same on the cd and when they sing live <3
I believe this tune was written before him and Nicole were dating. It was co-written by Paul Jefferson, who like Urban is a recovery addict.
This is the kind of tune that sets Urban apart from most other pop country. I mean how many 'mainstream' country singers are writing & performing something so personal and dark??
I think this tune oozes graditude, speaks of a spritual awakening,,,but knows the dark side is just a temptation/choice away.
He had a Drug addiction problem at the begining of his career and this was one of his biggest hit that took him out of drugs and he made this song based on that.
so much passion and power in his voice, this is a song i beilive everyone should hear atleast once in there life, the message and emotion, this is what music is about right here, dont get me wrong tho i love all types of music but the powerful and emotional is at the top of the list right now, this song gets to me everytime...
Ohhh, I haven't heard this song in so long. It gave me chills when it came out on the CD, and still gives me chills now. Maybe even more so :-/ . Timeless, profound, indescribable importance... these words. And only ONE soul on the planet could convey them that way.
I believe it is about overcoming something in your life that has such a hold on you it is as powerful as God. Could be money, could be drugs, could be another person who is pulling you down. Catholics are Christian, by the way.
For those of you who don't know, this song is very influential.. its all about money.. the first line, its just a piece of paper, it says in God we trust a little sure felt good but a lot was not enough. its about how money is evil, . then it goes to talk about addiction, which is little white lines on a mirror cut neatly in a row... which is a struggle he went through im sure u all know. its saying how money ruins peoples lives along with addiction
hey, kinda get your point, but this song is about one thing, cocaine! the piece of paper on the table that says 'in god we trust' is no doubt a bill, but roll them up to snort lines.the reason i'm coming off as i know it all, is that i'm a returning addict too. anyway, i don't think about money.
this song is about pretty much anything drags you down and takes over your life. specifically, the first verse is about the love of money that people develop. the second verse is about cocaine. the third is about the devil, and how he tempts people into doing what they know is wrong.
I can explain it. The song is about overcoming addiction. I believe it's about putting addiction first or putting it as your "God", and then realizing that the only true God is the one "you'll walk with in the end", in heaven.
I found this song very inspirational as I am a recovering drug addict and the only thing that saved me was God....this song tells it like it is and shows us with God all things are possible so thank you Keith
OMG i can't believe i found a video of this. i'm like tim, saw this on tv and have been a fan ever since. awesome performance, awesome man and this acoustic version is beautiful to me, wuz kinda disappointed when i listened to cd version (lol). keith is a PRIME example that people CAN change when and if they really want to. wtg keithy
What an amazing song! I was watching this on television when it came out and I have been a huge fan of this song ever since. Keith has dealt with so much adversity in his life and he is a true example of putting your mind to something and working your ass off to reach a goal.
I love you, Keith Urban! *gorgeous, talented, smart, wise, amazing*
