I have been feeding my wild crows for months, then all of a sudden they're not coming anymore. Does anyone know why this might be? (Food that I feed them hasn't changed.)
@AmyK007 How many of them are there? Usually what happens is that if there's a pair of ravens that comes regularly, they're a breeding pair and it's their area. If it's a large group of ravens, check the eyes. Some of them will be brown. That means it's a group of roving juveniles and unmated birds. You get them, they wander about. They will stick around for a good food resource then naff off for new prospects. It's quite normal behaviour, so don't worry. :)
@napalmnacey Thanks for replying! There used to be about 15 crows that came into my backyard and ate the meat and cat biscuits I left for them. Then, in the space of 24 hours they stopped coming. They were all adults, except two. Will they come back? Do they return to the places they have been or will I never see them again?
@AmyK007 Probably not that particular group. Ravens tend to search for mates and settle down. But there are always roving groups like the one that visited you. Hopefully you'll get a mated pair settling in your yard, that's your best bet for permanent raven residents. The ones in this video are the mated pair that live in my yard. I'm at odds with them at the moment cause they keep eating my damned strawberries! Thing is, they argue back! And keep eating them! lol!
@napalmnacey Oh that is sad. I even bought a bird bath for them (which they loved) and now I will never see them again. Oh well, gives me an opportunity to learn about them and still love them immensely. Sorry to hear about your strawberries. LOL :) I know this sounds funny, because most people don't like them, but I really think they are such beautifully intelligent birds with really nice personalities. I really appreciate them.
@napalmnacey I used to feed them chicken bones, watermelon, bananas, apple cores, cooked rice, pasta, old bread, meat, ham, cat biscuits, fresh water every day.....sad that I can't enjoy that anymore. :(
@ThInTrM I used to impersonate them when I was a little kid, and the other kids at school thought I was bugnuts. I remember when I stayed in LA in San Fernando Valley, there were what I figured were crows there and they ended their calls on a high note. It was like they were saying, "I ... I *think* I'm a crow... am I a crow? I think so..."
I love the crows and ravens, a real symbol of the Aussie outback. I live in Central Australia and have several Torresian crows as regular visitors who feed on meat cutoffs I leave outside for them. They actually recognise people as they will clear out if a stranger comes around. Thanks for the great post!
@rustymotor I actually had one of our ravens sing with me when I was putting washing on the line. He/She was sitting on the pergola nearby, and as I sang, it sang too, different little conversational raven noises. The second my sister came out (who doesn't live here, and the bird isn't used to) it flew off. They really get used to you and make friends with you, they're fantastic birds!
I don't care what people say, I love these birds. I buy chicken from the supermarket sometimes and when I have removed the meat off, I'll throw the carcass in the backyard for the Crows. Within minutes there is nothing left- no bones, nothing. They are so useful and they waste nothing.
@AmyK007 Oh, we always give our old meat to the birds. They're incredible, they clean up everything. The birds in the video are a mating pair I call Edgar and Poe. Once we had a flock of juvenile males come through (They wander about) and they loved it here. Moved on, thankfully. I love crows and I always have, they are clever and personable and they crack me up *all* the time!
When I was in Perth I knew this bird.....I just want to say that I really like his croak, it sounds like he is teasing for something. Salutes from Chile.
@napalmnacey Impossible to forget for sure, I was obsessed with birds in WA, even a french friend of mine gave a book about aussie birds to me as a birthday gift. Saludos de Chile.

@lukeiamurfather1 There's every chance there might have been a pissed off cat in the area, as I have a cranky tom. LOL!

Haha! Their call sounds like they're disappointed. "Awwwwww!"
Aussie ravens kind of remind me of Jackdaws with those eyes of theirs.

their mouths are open because it was so hot that day, 42 degrees! and also, those crows are quite big. They are about a foot long or more.
