Yes...I am sure we know how you feel. After all white americans didn't seem to mind the african americans fighting for them but then put them at the back of the bus as soon as they came home. Australia has never had to bus children to integrate them. And your own treatment of the Canadian indians was hardly exemplary until the last 30 years.
@deriter64 - So sorry that you were subjected to this, but please don't judge us all by the few idiots out there. The majority of us are a great bunch of people, and I hope you get to experience more of them soon!!
@tanjudge I don't judge all of Australia by a few experiences. My son in law and my beautiful grandchildren are born in Australia, proud Australian citizens, which has kept me coming back for 15 years.I've had some of the best times of my life in Australia. So much more shattering when my food is delivered festooned with tiny American flags and a waiter bellowing "Make sure there's enough stars on those flags sir!" Or to be seated in a pricey restaraunt and then ignored for 45 minutes. .
@deriter64 I think you are bullshitting. Why would you sit in a pricey restaurant only to be ignored for 45 minutes without saying something, or even walking out.? As for Australia having to be forever beholden for your help in WW2, it has been more than repaid by the loss of Aussie lives in "your" wars i.e Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan
@deriter64 Thats Aussie banter- the flags thing. We like to take a dig at each other. I think it's rude to wait 45 minutes for service, so that's tthe fault fo the restaurant, but is it really shattering to be given food with flags on it?
@deriter64 I am an American and have traveled all over the world AND IN NO COUNTRY HAVE I BEEN TREATED BETTER THAN IN AUSTRALIA!! I don't know what happened but I can assure you that Aussies are the nicest people this yank has ever encountered
i'll bet every other country in the world wished they had a song as good as this and also had this special **ANGELS VOICE**to sing it, love from england, xxx
An American here- a seppo, that's right. This song makes the tears roll down my face. Our Star Spangled Banner pales in comparison. Thank you for posting it. Good onya.
Old man now, sang 3 national anthems so far, none come up to this. The tears stream down my cheeks when judith Durham starts to sing " I'm the daughter of a digger......" , the Seekers sing about the heroric Australians who built this great country. They'll play this at my funeral, hopefully Australia's present generation has developed enough to make this our national anthem by then.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Australia will rise. We will break away from the shackles of monarchy and corporation, just like we have before. We will stand up towards injustice and oppression, just like we always have. We will fight for our country and become great. We will not be fucked with. We are Australians. We will rise.
I am a Canadian, born in the United States. As a u. professor, I write about how and why Australia is a better run country that my adopted Canada. I also sing folk songs and have liked the Seekers since the 1960s. And I must say that this song is a masterpiece -- both in the writing and the Seekers' execution.
I am jealous that such a great song cannot come from Canada. We lack the patriotism to come up with a song as great as this. This is superb!
@DavidJamesMurrell Curious kinship, I'm a retired journalist born in New Westminster. B.C, but with a family history that goes back to breaking the land and fighting the Comanches and Santa Anna for Texas. I don't debate the rights or wrongs of those times. They happened. My father was born a subject of Tsar Nicholas II, my mother on a rather large wheat farm in Saskatchewan. My granddaughters are Australians living happily in Melbourne. Funny old world,
even john howard favoured this as the preffered anthem. (although he didn't bring it to a referendum. he was too busy sabotaging the rupublic referndum so people wouldn't vote for it)
I'm not an Australian, but this is a moving song especially sung by Judith Durham and The Seekers, of the 22 million people in Australia, one would think this video should have already over a million views! What's going on, you Aussies don't like this tribute to Australia? It's such a moving song!
@tchin2020 It was hijacked by Telstra who own the rights to the song and used it through various advertising campaigns to sell their product, therefore its been commercialised somewhat. Nevertheless it remains a great song that truly captures the spirit of Australia unlike our existing sterile, turd anthem. Most Aussies prefer this as our anthem but nothing will happen until we drop the Queen and become a republic. Some day...
Makes one proud to be an Aussie- not that we need any excuse! Remenber seeing them singing this song at the AFL Grand Final in I think 1995. To hear nearly 100,000 people joining in the chorus was spine-tingling. If I got the year right it was a doubly great day as the mighty BLUE BOYS won!
This song tells all why the Aussies are good at most sporting events, Just simply pride at belonging to Australia fuels their desire to win. Some thing the once Great Britain now sadly lacks, pride in ones homeland.
@angelf1re The gifts, inventions and achievements Great Britain have given to the rest of the world are enough that they should all have immense pride in their country forevermore. Cannot understand the reason for the decline in such pride, and can only assume they have been browbeaten down by the insidious political correctness that is pervading the whole western world these days .
Many comments here side with using this song as the national anthem. A few comments point out a problem with that idea, in that some versions of this song were used for commercial advertising. It occurs to me, that such a “criminal” background should be forgiven or even praised in the debate for this song becoming the national anthem. Australia stands as the example that past judgments are not the absolute predictor of what good the future holds. Go fiercely doing what is right.
I agree this should be OUR SONG from where ever WE come from,I love my country and fought for it on others homeland, the people that kill without any concern for the innocent.
This makes me cry - should be the national anthem no doubt. Mine came out here in the Irish Famine Years - so this song makes me cry as said because I know the struggles my parents, theirs and theirs had - and this is an amazing place.
Canada should have this kind of pride instead of bending over backwards trying to be politically correct. Canada's struggle to be a nation was no less arduous than Australia's and we had the U.S right next door (no don't jump at me, I'm half American with ancestral roots in Texas and Oklahoma) and the challenges of the Australian landscape were no harsher than Canada. Take your choice: die of thirst or freeze to death. Maybe Australians are just smarter, hope so my granddaughters are Aussies.
@MsSloppyseconds No! And I'm darned glad. Nor do we have brown snakes, or for that matter funnel web spiders or stone fish. Rattlers are about it for poisonous reptiles and scary as they are their venom is way less lethal than Australian snakes. We do have some dangerous predators, dominated by the Grizzly bear which has a very bad temper and can outrun a horse and outfight a Bengal tiger. But I haven't gone into the woods for many years now.All the best.
@deriter64 Sorry for the late reply mate been busy. If I had to choose between being chased by a snake or a bear I'd choose a bear, can't shoot a snake, bigfoot on the otherhand... The inland taipan is very calm so you'd have to poke it with a stick to get bitten, don't wanna mess with a brown thought.

Beautiful... I think no matter where you are from... if you love the spirit of this song... you are Australian... it brings my heart to the gospel of Jesus... love...
she makes me cry,i remerber it so wel i was 6 jears old en we lide in normanhurst we where goning back to holland and my sister en me were very sad en so if i here the see.kers i am lost in tears en i am so homesick .she sings my lonly heart
I'm a Kiwi but Australians can be proud of their great country. Awesome song, I managed to catch them in concert many years ago. Judith Durham, you are awesome.
They forgot the verse about closing public swimming pools to the general public so Muslim women can swim in private, Muslim only schools so Muslim kids don't have to mix with Aussie kids, illegal immigrants receiving 3 x more in welfare benefits than Aussies, the same migrants going to the head of the queue for public housing. Yes, this should be our National Anthem - not!!!! Ideological claptrap, but a nice song nonetheless.
@gratedcheese100 This song was first performed in 1993, long before the emergence of the hysterical debate you wish to advance. Even if it were first performed today, it would have fresh relevance. Much of what you say is claptrap. We've long had Catholic-only schools so that the dirty Catholic kids don't have to mix with filthy Protestants, and vice versa. Is that so bad as the idea of Islamic ('church') schools for kids from Islamic households?
As a Brit i wish we could even consider performing an inspirational song like this, well done Australia.well done Judith,a magnificent performance, was this really 93,her voice had not changed at all from the 60,s
No one sings this song as well as the original like 'The Seekers' and it is in times of crisis that a song like this helps remind us who we are and lift our spirits.
We have many great songs that so fit our country, people & "culture" this surely must be up there as a "most descriptive" of US & OURS. Gotta love the musicians who first recorded this. PS I love Rock the heavier the better.
simple to do. the 'short version' - do the teller of stories verse & the hot wind verse, followed by the chorus. long version, full song. ladies and gents, I give you our national anthem
Powerful and moving song. I wish America would have such a national song celebrating our unity and diversity (and be honest about our history), without merely glorifying war or singing a religious hymn. This is almost an International Anthem. Long live Australia (and America, and our friendship).
I have never been Down Under, but still think Australians are cool -- tough, tanned, blonde, lean, smart, smirky, and able to communicate in something very like English. Very lucky to have an entire continent to stretch out in, a place of plenty and freedom that they built up with strong hands.
.... i mean i like the song and all... but to say to not like a song, means your not australian.. that's pretty un-australian in itself... goes against the australian value of free speech, does it not?
maybe you should look up the definition... if they want to dislike the song, they can. if I want to dislike their dislike, I can. You can dislike what I say, but you can't tell me what I can and can't say!
yeah... i have considering do also study human rights law... what you're doing is not considered free speech, just to let you know. then you'll just have to settle for me calling you un-Australian :)
@wizardofwaste Hi, I'm a Canadian and might wish the same. But you have the Battle Hymn Of The Republic which is heart stopping. All best next door neighbour.
@matreb9902 not quite replace the national anthem, but it should be an anthem on it's own.. i completely agree with you here... up to a point i guess.. lol
@matreb9902 I so agree.. i was saying this the other day!! This makes more.. sense. .that what we have now.. it's pointless.. now and words no one understands.. Change is GOOD!
I've been youtubing Aussie classics that make us proud Aussies all night and out of all of em that peopl want the national anthem this song should be it
This song, whether it's sung by the Seekers or a rock group like Lo-Tel, etc. should be Australia's official National Anthem. Australia has alot to be proud of. Although by no means perfect, it's a wonderful land to live and to visit. I hope to visit one day, and HOPEFULLY, live there.
truly one of THE most beautiful songs ever written. The Seekers performance of it makes it even that much more beautiful. i found it purely by accident one evening and now every time i am on the computer i will listen to it 2 or 3 times. i love it.
To moparmtn, treasureies too , and all posts, thank you very much as a very proud AUSTRALIAN. your words mean so much , , but , the "definative' version of this great, great song/ Anthem is sung by a young Karen Knowles , IF , ONLY I cxould locate it. I have it on Vinyal , , I must transfer it to CD. maybe then I can share it , her voice is stunning in this song .
I too as an American understand this song as both our countries have a similar beginning ... I have put out several posts over the years about this song and feel it is one of the greatest songs ever written... we have stood besides each other in times of needs, troubles and sorrows and we need each other more then ever in this troubled world.... Bruce, this song is a classic and will live forever... I thank you for it and all you and the Seekers have done for us with this outstanding music...
As an American your Damn right I understand this song, so many parallels in our two countries. The Aussies have been so supportive of us and have died by our side even though some of our decisions by our presidents have not been so popular. Dare I say god bless Australia (and the Seekers, hehe).
One of my uncles, Master Sargent Raymond O'Hare, stayed in your country prior to invading New Guinea and then the Philippines. He thought highly of the Aussie soldiers.
Later, when I attended the XIII World Jamboree in Japan, I met some Aussie Boy Scouts, and thought the world of them.
If you guys still like Americans, I'd love to come for a visit sometime!
@mbabist01 I love going to the States and your patriotism is a lot greater than ours. In the USA you see the flag everywhere. Houses, shops, cars. In Australia not enough!
That's because many people are unhappy with the current flag and want to get rid of the union jack and so they should, Canada and South Africa changed their flag and so should we.
im an American and have always wanted to visit Australia. this song sang by The Seekers, makes me want to go there that much more. this was done very beautifully by them.
To everybody who listened to the whole song and didnt understand a few things you wont ever because only Australians can understand it and were all proud of this song
Hey Mate. So too were all the most beautiful diamonds in the world just rock at one time! It is only when they are polished by a master that they become priceless- like the land called Australia that was once a huge rock! That is why people keep coming here from all over the world risking their lives across dangerous seas in flimsy boats!
this should be the aussie national anthem. Why cant the U.S get a good song like this instead of some unsingable pub screech that no one knows the second verse to.
@wasslic.....Your statement is wrong in it's entirety. For you to "keep out an undesirable", that person would have needed to want "in" in the first place. Queenslanders are all the same.
@wasslic You have jumped to a no. of wrong conclusions. My first sentence is totally accurate up to a point in history. Secondly, this IS a romanticised WHITE mans history of Australia. What standing does the Blackfella have in Australian society? If you find the truth insulting, you have a problem. If you are antagonised by having the truth pointed out to you, tough............
@ozzyguy67..the comment was for general consumption. You'll do though. Always a big mouth Aussie ready to spout off. I am English, check where the term "pommie" comes from. More likely to refer to you and your family. Don't see what your pissed off about, didn't mention your girlfriend once mate.
I love our country Australia, my parents are Croatian, but I was born true blue, glad my parents decided to come and live in Australia 30 years ago, that was the only thing they did right, lol
Yes mate the first Australians were blackfellas, the rest of you were thrown out of your country as undesirables. This is romanticised "bull", just like the other 'paddy and jock' "songs"? about where they came from, if it was that beautiful, bugger off back there and stay.
@skittification . Well if insulting and antagonistic comments are the best you can manage, at least we managed to keep one undesirable out of Australia. Good luck with Liz, Charlie and Camilla
happy Australian Day to all you'all down under.

@deriter64 Does Canada have the inland taipan? :)
MsSloppyseconds 7 months ago
@MsSloppyseconds No! And I'm darned glad. Nor do we have brown snakes, or for that matter funnel web spiders or stone fish. Rattlers are about it for poisonous reptiles and scary as they are their venom is way less lethal than Australian snakes. We do have some dangerous predators, dominated by the Grizzly bear which has a very bad temper and can outrun a horse and outfight a Bengal tiger. But I haven't gone into the woods for many years now.All the best.
deriter64 7 months ago
@deriter64 Sorry for the late reply mate been busy. If I had to choose between being chased by a snake or a bear I'd choose a bear, can't shoot a snake, bigfoot on the otherhand... The inland taipan is very calm so you'd have to poke it with a stick to get bitten, don't wanna mess with a brown thought.

I'm a Kiwi but Australians can be proud of their great country. Awesome song, I managed to catch them in concert many years ago. Judith Durham, you are awesome.
Radguy150 8 months ago
I saw them sing this at the Royal Abert Hall.
Like going back in time after some 25 years when last they were in London.
Think they would make a living singing today.
Catherineone 8 months ago
They forgot the verse about closing public swimming pools to the general public so Muslim women can swim in private, Muslim only schools so Muslim kids don't have to mix with Aussie kids, illegal immigrants receiving 3 x more in welfare benefits than Aussies, the same migrants going to the head of the queue for public housing. Yes, this should be our National Anthem - not!!!! Ideological claptrap, but a nice song nonetheless.
gratedcheese100 8 months ago
@gratedcheese100 This song was first performed in 1993, long before the emergence of the hysterical debate you wish to advance. Even if it were first performed today, it would have fresh relevance. Much of what you say is claptrap. We've long had Catholic-only schools so that the dirty Catholic kids don't have to mix with filthy Protestants, and vice versa. Is that so bad as the idea of Islamic ('church') schools for kids from Islamic households?

this is better used to discribe our ways then our current anthem is
CookieCat94 8 months ago
No one sings this song as well as the original like 'The Seekers' and it is in times of crisis that a song like this helps remind us who we are and lift our spirits.
RoseAussie 8 months ago
We have many great songs that so fit our country, people & "culture" this surely must be up there as a "most descriptive" of US & OURS. Gotta love the musicians who first recorded this. PS I love Rock the heavier the better.

simple to do. the 'short version' - do the teller of stories verse & the hot wind verse, followed by the chorus. long version, full song. ladies and gents, I give you our national anthem
MrTherandom0ne 8 months ago
Powerful and moving song. I wish America would have such a national song celebrating our unity and diversity (and be honest about our history), without merely glorifying war or singing a religious hymn. This is almost an International Anthem. Long live Australia (and America, and our friendship).

I did a cover of this song for ANZAC Day. Please check it out, subscribe, comment and share with your friends.

I have never been Down Under, but still think Australians are cool -- tough, tanned, blonde, lean, smart, smirky, and able to communicate in something very like English. Very lucky to have an entire continent to stretch out in, a place of plenty and freedom that they built up with strong hands.

@genga84
.... i mean i like the song and all... but to say to not like a song, means your not australian.. that's pretty un-australian in itself... goes against the australian value of free speech, does it not?
JepJep92 9 months ago
@JepJep92
haha, aren't you infringing on my free speech...
genga84 9 months ago
@genga84
insulting someone on their right to say they don't like something is not free speech.
JepJep92 9 months ago
maybe you should look up the definition... if they want to dislike the song, they can. if I want to dislike their dislike, I can. You can dislike what I say, but you can't tell me what I can and can't say!
genga84 9 months ago
@genga84
yeah... i have considering do also study human rights law... what you're doing is not considered free speech, just to let you know. then you'll just have to settle for me calling you un-Australian :)

Seattlecarnut 10 months ago
truly one of THE most beautiful songs ever written.

I have it on Vinyal , , I must transfer it to CD. maybe then I can share it , her voice is stunning in this song .
lavalamp1486 10 months ago
I too as an American understand this song as both our countries have a similar beginning ... I have put out several posts over the years about this song and feel it is one of the greatest songs ever written... we have stood besides each other in times of needs, troubles and sorrows and we need each other more then ever in this troubled world.... Bruce, this song is a classic and will live forever... I thank you for it and all you and the Seekers have done for us with this outstanding music...
moparmtn 10 months ago 4
As an American your Damn right I understand this song, so many parallels in our two countries. The Aussies have been so supportive of us and have died by our side even though some of our decisions by our presidents have not been so popular. Dare I say god bless Australia (and the Seekers, hehe).
treasureis1 10 months ago
One of my uncles, Master Sargent Raymond O'Hare, stayed in your country prior to invading New Guinea and then the Philippines. He thought highly of the Aussie soldiers.
Later, when I attended the XIII World Jamboree in Japan, I met some Aussie Boy Scouts, and thought the world of them.
If you guys still like Americans, I'd love to come for a visit sometime!
mbabist01 10 months ago 3
@mbabist01 I love going to the States and your patriotism is a lot greater than ours. In the USA you see the flag everywhere. Houses, shops, cars. In Australia not enough!

That's because many people are unhappy with the current flag and want to get rid of the union jack and so they should, Canada and South Africa changed their flag and so should we.

Queenslanders are all the same.
skittification 11 months ago
@wasslic You have jumped to a no. of wrong conclusions. My first sentence is totally accurate up to a point in history. Secondly, this IS a romanticised WHITE mans history of Australia. What standing does the Blackfella have in Australian society? If you find the truth insulting, you have a problem. If you are antagonised by having the truth pointed out to you, tough............

Yes mate the first Australians were blackfellas, the rest of you were thrown out of your country as undesirables. This is romanticised "bull", just like the other 'paddy and jock' "songs"? about where they came from, if it was that beautiful, bugger off back there and stay.
