for me, voodoo child is the top of the electric guitar, in all terms. You don´t need only skill to play this one, you need soul. thats why the versions of zack wylde or satriani are awful. srv and jimmi had soul.
Two things: I've always wondered what the bass player says to Stevie at 3:44 to make him look at someone to his right and play a nasty note, like "eat this, mother fucker". And at 4:40 the sound he gets is so soaked in suffering there's no way I could ever doubt he knew the blues, inside out.
that was my point....typically who is the one who should get credit...the one who originally played and wrote the song, or who covers it almost exactly like the dude who came up with it? I was basically responding to those claiming that SRV was doing a better job than Hendrix...which is ridiculous, because, aside from the feedback control that Hendrix used, SRV plays it almost exactly like Hendrix.
I don't think Stevie was sober during this period was he?...Is later stuff is so much more focused and 'on'.....still the best to ever tune those 6 strings.
It's painful to me how many people I've shown SRV to, only to have it go right over their heads. They just don't get it. Nobody appreciates this kind of talent these days. It's like untalented is the new talented now. Any moron can sing off key into an auto-tuner that does all the work for them, and then lip the sync the recording on stage. Yet the people who do get record contracts and millions of admiring fans. Crazy backwards world we live in today.
@pipon55 No.The bass is just really loud and he is pushing his voice way too hard to try and sing over it .I mean listen to that fucking rumble.turn that shit down and let Stevie shine man.His vocals were so amazing. He was such a loss.an incredible inspiration to me!
I've witnessed great guitar players over the years who can pull off tricks and stunts and play so fast you can't see their fingers move. Maybe even have talent to the point to say they were technically as good as some of the greats, but I just can't get over this guy. He doesn't just play, he captivates, surprises and gives each and every string on a guitar life. Him and Hendrix. Long may their music live. RIP.
@jf4r3w311 IMO, Hendrix is mostly just noise compared to Stevie Ray. Stevie played with his heart, Hendrix just cranked his amp as far as it could go and smashed his flaming guitar onto the stage and jumped up and down on the whammy bar (bit of an exaggeration there) but yes, RIP to both
@langford11592 He's just playing a few (nowadays) standard blues licks based around the minor pentatonic and using lots of pull-offs. He plays it really fast but you can hear the licks he uses...
Stevie's favorite guitar was his 1960 Fender strat that he named 1st wife but my favorite guitar in his collection is the Hamilton guitar that was given to him as a gift from Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Its really cool looking, I love the finish of it and its a solid body like a les paul but has a cutaway design like a fender strat, and it has a great women like tone.
Stevie was so stoned during this performance till its ridiculous, but that is what has really endeared him to me and made this performance so special and one of my favorites. Its so special to me because inspite of his addiction he still is able to get up their and give 1000%, while still showing great poise and fortitude.
Rory was also at Montreux in 1985, and was in top form. To see him and SRV share the stage, that would have been something beyond. I wonder why those two never jammed together?
SRV is a legend but this is one of the worse performances of this song i think, not much intro and one of the few times he misses a note and goes off key with his vocals. both versions from austin city limits are better.

Im not doubting his ability, I love SRV but some of the other times he played Voodoo Child it rocked harder, I like this version, but he goes off key once, and missed a note, but it has some good parts in it, I especially like how he says "this is for jimi" beforehand. I just like both Austin city limits versions as well as El mocambo.
