I feel so bad for people that lived back in the dark ages. So many lives wasted, and oh, the poor few aethiests that had to live quietly or be smiten by cruel people obsessed with control
Christian art could be considered the first era of pop culture. The bible was all the rage and inspired many artworks. Unfortunately the original material had been plagiarized several times before. And the book isn't really that great. Reminds me of a few mainstream musical genres... lol (silly comment) I really enjoyed this program. It gave me some new ideas to think about!
So in response to his "thin form of life" statement in the last video, let me say "What a thin form of life you must live, devoid of the art and images of the Hellenistic pagans!"
Except his first statement is to only count those who hold with conviction that there is no (G)od as atheist. He also says that it would be a very thin form of life without the Christian art, as if the art of other religions or secular art are not just as moving or beautiful. He's given too much to begin with.
I doubt he would deny that secular art or the art of other religions is moving and beautiful. He's essentially saying that Jewish and Christian culture, represented in its myths and art, played a significant role in the construction of European identity. As he would surely say, this doesn't make them right, nor does it make them inherently better. It's a cultural and historical point, like saying it's edifying to read the Odyssey even if you don't believe in Greek gods.
Ah I see what you're saying. Though I must admit, Christian art isn't really any more impressive than the art and architecture of the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
Good documentary. I thought the whole belief explanation was slightly overdone, but there are some excellent views put forth nonetheless. My favorites are those of the Greek philosphers mentioned in this segment of the episode. So short and simple yet vastly insightful and logical.
What is the music used in this?

@Voodoofreak35 The Seneca quote really is great, but I prefer the Epicurus quote at 4:12 to be far more interesting and in a way intuitive.
