  • That's funny, I own nothing but Firebirds 305 with automatic transmissions, and still dust 5.0 mustangs. No one will race me here anymore because of it. I'm not saying mustangs are bad, because they start off impressive, but they soon fade. I almost bought a mustang that I thought could take my car, until I dusted it in a race, I'm stickin with the bird.

  • back in the late 90s I had an 87 IROC 350 auto, I thought that car was the best till I drove my buddies 87 5.0 5 speed. needless to say I sold the IROC 1500 less than what I payed for it then took out a personal loan to buy 90 LX 5.0 that car was awesome! only car I ever had that would grab 4 gears of rubber. babies came the car got sold

  • bro my gta has somthing for your mustang ..... 373 gears in rear fast burn heads big plenum runners modified computor, headers roller cam rockers ect. lotsof horse power and a tuned suspention with a 700 r built trans with a 300 stall. and no stangs can hang that are street legal not even those sh@tbys tear them up. I admit though like the new stangs better than the new cameros. They just look better and are a better car for the $

  • @ADD8oi thanks man,check that gear in that 5.0,i pulled out an 2.73 ratio in my '90 gt and put in a 3.73 ratio and left motor stock,minus k&n filter.that geared me in the same ratio as corvettes,irocs,and formula ta's.rated at lower hp than them,i bet them all day long from light to light.just match there rear end ratio and you'll bet them with less cubes!

  • @51mcm I agree. I had an '86 GT 5.0 and dusted those F-bodies of the day ALL DAY, EVERYDAY. 350's back then were not what they wound up being in he late 90's and early 2000's.

  • @51mcm i agree, i have an 85 trans am, 5.0's walk off and leave me when i am in it. but my buddy has an 87 and eats stock 5.0's its all in the cars. But for the most part the 5.0 in the mustang was right it was a light car and a good motor. But pontiac went out of business cause of a decision made my higher ups (i think buick should of been cut instead) but since pontiac didnt have an original car of their own besides the G8 (all other cars were just a fancy version of a chevrolet) they got axed

  • @51mcm Hmm, one of the fastest if not thee fastest T/A's ever made was an 89 Turbo T/A, and no stock 5.0 could hold a candle to them. And stock 302's are really nothing to get excited about, stock block 302's are notorious for splitting down the valley when going past 700HP, and if you want to play with the big boys using a windsor engine, best you get a boss block or man-o-war block. And in a 80's T/A, what serious player leaves them stock anyhow?

  • @GMisurdaddy not even close to the fastest trans am. the fastest third gen maybe, but those turbo 3.8s were only making 250 hp. not too much more than the v8s.

  • @RicerEater1978 You know nothing about the Buick V6 then, go on any board, do research on these engines that "250 HP" rating was under stated, and never go by power ratings, they mean nothing, its real world tests and performance that tells the tale. 89 Turbo T/A's have been as fast as 13.4 in the quarter(stock)

    That tells quite a different tale than 250HP would allow.

  • All F-bodied owners think there all that.. Dont forget , The Mustang has been very compeditive with only 4.6 liters. Ive blown away LT1 F-bodies, stock on stock with my 06 GT. The LS1 powered cars do get me by about 2 carlengths in the 1/4. I still say, very impressive to be so close with only 4.6Liters...I have done some mods now thow. So i cant wait to recompare. Now the new 5.0lL is one to watchout for. Here we go again. Ford outperforming with a smaller engine..

  • I have a 2002transam that has never been beat by a mustang. ford putstiny ass engines and have to put a superchager just to make it get out of its own way and run 12s. but charge my car and i promise ill run 11s

  • That was a nice Mustang GT. Trans-Am's are definitely faster rides though and of course I mean stock for stock. It also depends on the years were talking too.

  • that 8.whatever is in the 1/8th mile. cause if that stang was running 8s in the quater he would have not been running down the highway. there would have been a cage. and such. that is a full 2 seconds slower in the 8th than any stock fbody, manual or standard. mustangs are so over rated either way. the splash that the "sporty" car makes might carry a long time but that is simply because there are alot of girls and bitches that need something to drive. buy a real car if you want to race!

  • Well this is hardly a fair race haha, granted the T/A and Irocs were superior in the 80's pitting one against a newer Mustang just isnt even a contest. Also im not a fan of any brand just muscle cars in general but i gotta admit, displacement is a big thing, especially if you're a fan of N/A engines, id rather have an N/A 6.0 than a supercharged 5.4 myself, and the LS engines are just phenominal, ive never seen a broken LS1 or LS3 that goes a long way for me

  • ls1's are the shit, i swapped one into my 96' 3.8 bird, power is just amazing, what a difference 105 hp makes too!

  • haha, very true, and a lot of people say GM under rated the LS1 as to not detract sales from the Corvette (which they've been known to do many times in the past, especially with the old 455 Super Duty T/A) one interesting note, superchevy magazine tested a stock LS1 and reached hp ratings nearing 400hp...of course this was at the crank but still, its an interesting note to toss around in your head haha.

  • @lmorrow4 At least the Trans Am looked really good for three generations and were faster than Mustangs for four generations. The 3rd gen mustangs look like a hunk of junk that I would never consider driving. The 4th gen mustangs are yet again terrible but better than its previous generation. The newest mustangs are the best since the 70's. There just ok. The only muscle car coming out today that I think looks cool is the new Dodge Challenger. Those things are going to be classics.

  • @watthefishy2 theres actually a list of good ones past the 70s. Mach 1, 99-01 cobra, 03-04 cobra, 05-09 stock for stock can actually run neck and neck with transams, the new GT500s (both gens), the GT500KR, Super Snake, Roush mustangs, Saleen mustangs, and can't exclude the new 5.0 (426hp)

  • @ShamusOGrady2 Based on looks the Super Snake and Roush mustangs are nice looking because they resemble the older ones. If your talking about power and torque i'm sure they'd blow almost any Trans Am away and most any stock car but then again those cars aren't stock. The new mustangs have power but Nissans are coming out with 325+ hp stock six cylinders. If you compare '10 mustangs to other '10 cars it doesn't seem incredibly impressive.

  • i see the gta taking it just because it has a MUCH bigger v8. gt's used to have 302's in them until they went down to the 281. an 89 GTA has a 350. Not to mention that older cars are definitely built with more quality. lol i did a neutral drop in my 87' firebird and my friend did the same in his 95 camaro. it snapped his driveshaft in half. My car still drives great. that was almost a year ago.

  • the 4.6l is a better engine then the 90's 5.0, in stock form that is, with some after market work, like heads, intake, exhaust, the 5.0 becomes a fairly potent engine, but it will never have the same potential as a 350 because of the difference in displacement, but to run a stock gta against say a stock 94 gt, that would be a fairly good race, and even better with a 4.6 gt
