I assume all the settings were auto...? How are the manual controls? The auto iris and focus sorta drew attention to themselves in this video, so I would prefer to keep them in manual. But, I don't want to drop the cash on this camera and find out the manual controls are bunk. Any input?
Yes, all settings were on auto. The manual focus on this camera is utterly useless mainly because there's no dedicated manual focus ring/rocker/slider. You have to use the joystick next to the LCD - push it in brings up the menu, from there you can access the manual focus, then push the joystick left/right to adjust. It's a cumbersome process, the built-in mic can pick up the joystick button noise. The manual focus itself is quite good, but the way you adjust and access it isn't.
What do you mean? The camcorder? or AVCHD (.mts file format)?
In either case, yes.
No software/driver needed to import footage on a Mac, since it's USB2.0, your Mac shouldn't have any problem recognize the camcorder, it should show up as a massive storage device, from there you can access your video footage.
I believe Final Cut Express 4 HD supports AVCHD format natively.
I'm not sure, without proper codec support, WMM probably won't import native .mts (AVCHD format) files. So you need a video converter that converts .mts files to like .wmv or .avi which WMM supports.
Alternatively, you can try using third party codec packs like CCCP, K-Lite, or FFDShow, then try and see if WMM will take the files or not.
I like how you are filming things close up and think about all the things someone can do with this. I don't like the videos where they just film the wall and stuff. Good video.
i paid about 700 for mine when it first came out. Ive seen it for around 600 on a few sites. just make sure you order it from a company that doesnt sell grey market cams...I had a bad experience dealing with one. make sure you get an extra battery, the stock one is 890 and it only lasts about 80 mins. I got the bp819 and it last about 2 1/2 hours. if you need lenses Im selling a couple macro and fisheyes for it. 37 mm
$800? I got this off Amazon for $599 couple weeks back, now the price jacked up way up. Wait for the price to come down again, you will get a good deal on it. Be sure to buy an extra battery, the stock one really sucks, only lasts about 1hr15mins.
It has 60GB, which is capable of holding more than 5hrs of full HD footage at 24Mbps, if that's not enough for you, then get the HG21, which is exactly the same as HG20, but has 120GB HDD, also an optical viewfinder.
Raw HD footage (.mts file) playback on my computer is freakn' amazing, even though I only have a 22" screen at 1680x1050.

Hell yeah. I use the Hg20 also for every single one of my videos. Check out my channel. This camera is great quality for the price.

People dont encourage Max to buy video equipment.
he has some rather odd plans for his Canon HG20
Uh it involves ropes, skateboards, whipped cream, and lots of sweaty guys.
WHOA!!!

I got this camcorder months ago still haven't got Adobe Premiere CS4, so I haven't done any editing yet...

I use Sony Vegas, which works fine with native AVCHD formats. Plus, it's much cheaper than Premiere.

You are talking about the Pro versions, low end versions are suffice enough for home video editing use. Go to their website, you will see.

Yeah, I was really trying to show how the camera handles extreme close-up shots, it turned out surprisingly well. Great camcorder.

I don't know, upgrade your Flash, wait until the video is fully loaded then watch it, update your graphics card driver, what's your system spec?

any cons with this Camcorder? is the 80 gig hdd enough?
quality playback once on the computer..still HD?
macintoshtipz 2 years ago
It doesn't have a dedicated manual focus wheel, you have to use the joystick next to the LCD screen.
The noise you make while using the joystick can be picked up by the built-in mic.
Built-in mic could be better, but good enough for home indoor use.
Stock battery is poor, get an extra - BP-827
