Any seas which has oil seeping up from the ground there are naturally created organisms which eat up the oil and live off of it. Which is why clean-up is much much easier than Exxon Valdez. Valdez will always be the worst because clean-up was under worse conditions and with no organisms which could eat up the oil.

cars arent the only machines that use petroleum products. The plastic and composite industries rely on petroleum(Alkenes). Fertilizers that feed 40% of the planet use petroleum. batteries,solvents, paints,household cleaners, all womens make up products are derived from oil. Its something we need to slowly grow away from, but abrupt shifts are not economically friendly.

Since the car fuel should be resolvable, let the US attack this problem with vigor and reduce by then 1/2 of it oil needs. That should change the game in terms of where to drill ... and by then, the other industry may find breakthrough (the Air Force for example recently relesed a bio-fuel based jet fighter, here goes another big %tage).
